I guess I've been rejected from the Cottages & Bungalows magazine subscription. I sent in a request about 8 months ago --- and heard
nothing back.

Ohhh well, saved myself some money.

Price has gone up too in that time. I've decided to just let mine expire and will pick up the interesting ones as I see them.:(

Oh and Layla of lettered cottage has posted on her blog they are going to showcase her kitchen..paaaleeeeze. That girl has never done anything that doesn't look like a page from the Pottery barn catalog..she has never had an original idea to save her life..and they are going to showcase her? Might have to rethink this magazine.. just saying.

Yes that is what I like to see. But in magazines I expect to be wowed..not just see ahh nothing special.
But as you said we all have our own opinions and that is just mine :)

I think there are much better kitchens amoung the ladies on here personally.

I subscribe to very few magazines because with most of them, I find that there's only one or two things in each issue that interests me. Also, I prefer to pick up single issues as a "treat" for myself at the store instead of buying myself something to eat (yes, I tend to do that... no, I don't need the extra calories).

Has anyone seen the June issue on the newsstands yet?

I checked out the Lettered Cottage and I have to say and I know it is just my opinion BUT....she has great skill at balance and color. It looks polished and fresh( that is my all time favorite word). I think everyone knows to use odd numbers when you display your things but she does have a good good eye. Not too much stuff just enough and the colors are pretty spot on.
She is young and her home looks young.
I was just saying the other day that my house looks Ma-Maw. I just can't seem to part with some of the vintage collectables that I have found. I am putting some of my sweety pie things away. I really don't need my grandmothers dollies every where and the little tea set on the wicker trunk at the end of the bed needs to go.....who sets tea up at the end of the bed??????
I still (and again this is my silly opinion) think that Martha Stewart has the most gorgeous taste. She has collections of vintage things but her taste is pristine clean and with fabulous colors . I always imagine you could eat off the floors at her house. I wish she would invite me over......:o

I just looked for the June/July issue while browsing around Lowes, Target and Walmart- didn't see any copies of C&B at all.

I just re-upped my subscription. It was pretty pricey, more than I pay for my other magazine subscriptions, so I hope the upcoming year will be worth it.

Apparently the kitchen on this blog is going to be featured too?

http://nameisgrace.blogspot.com/2010/05/so-excited.html

Maybe they are doing a piece on white kitchens :D Personally, I like this one AND The Lettered Cottage's. Perhaps my taste is a little mainstream, but I just really like a simple, bright, all-white kitchen.

Anyone seen the June/July issue of Cottages & Bungalows? I emailed them from the "Contact Us" area on this forum, but haven't heard a word back- that was several days ago.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago in the mail. There were some good articles in this one. Hillary has been promoted to editor-at-large and someone else is taking her place, though I don't know whether that person will also be on the forums. There is a great article about a couple in England who bought a vacation home made out of a couple of railroad cars...sort of like the Boxcar Children on steroids. There was another short article about cottage gardening and an interview with Thomas Moser about his furniture. My favorite article was "Imagined Cottage," probably because the interior color scheme used the greens and pinks I like so well. All in all it was a good issue with lots of nice photos.

I just saw the June/July issue on the newsstand, browsed through it, but won't be buying it. Too "beachy" for my taste although of course I realize that's a good summer theme. It's just that, living here in Montana, oceans are far away and not my cup of tea for decorating.

Also, is anyone else getting tired of seeing one of those humongous expensive white farmhouse sinks in EVERY kitchen now? That's getting as ubiquitous as granite countertops a few years ago!

I tend not to go for the "fad of the moment", but I know a lot of people want to see what's currently in fashion. I like what I like, whether or not it is deemed "in style".

It's pretty much like clothing fashions too - when something is "hot", it's hard to avoid seeing it over and over and over again. That's the job of advertising - to convince everyone that they need the latest thing.

Kind of funny above as for our bungalow homes and most older homes those humongous sinks are what would be there. So, it is appropriate isn't it?
Granite never was. :)

Hello all -- !

The June issue should be on newsstands now. I'm sorry if you haven't found it. Here's the cover (although the colors look weird on my monitor!)

1549

As far as the subscription issues you bring up, let me check for you.
Can you send an email directly to me with address, date you signed up? I will email you individually my work address (so I don't post it here and encourage spammers).

My apologies for the headaches!

BTW, the price went up for a subscription because we now offer 10 issues/year instead of 6. C&B is growing. It's good news!

Be back soon,
Hillary

Yes, that's true, Tammy...but what I hate is what I said, above...lots of people flock to things not because they are appropriate for their type of house, they do it just because the item is "in style". I've seen a contemporary house with a farm sink!

Well, I figure a person should have the kind of sink they want whether it's period appropriate or not. If it makes them happy, why not? Life is too short to forego something you love even if a million other people love it too. I'd feel the same way about having to put something I don't love in my house just because it is historically accurate. Honestly, I'm a lot more irritated by anachronistic details in historical novels than I am about them in the kitchen.

It looked like a fun little place, and it doesn't scream "boxcar" from the outside, but on the inside you can see the details. She's got a beachy theme going on, but I was thinking how much fun it would be to take a couple of cars and sort of do them up Orient Express style. Or even Wild West style. Aw...now I want a caboose!

I loved the comment about boxcar children on steroids..my older son read all those books..ahhh memories.

I have always thought a caboose would be a cool little guest house..Guess it wouldn't work on my small city lot though would it?

And I agree Gigi- I think as long as it is a person's house they should do what floats their boat..I hate granite but others love it and hate my wood..to each their own..

Absolutely right! That's what makes each of our homes, our individualized "castle"! ;)

I don't like fads in general -- clothing, shoes, decorations -- and I think the farmhouse sink big enough to bathe a Saint Bernard in is a fad. However, if you love it, have one! I've read of many people who swear they love granite, but it's funny how they only loved it once it was the "in" thing to install to show you had thousands of dollars to spend on countertops. No offense meant to anyone; we should all have what we love and can afford in our homes. :)

Wow I had no idea I was so "in":D I have a farmhouse sink and granite:eek: But my farmhouse sink is not an apron sink, so maybe I am not as with it as I thought;) The reason I love the big sinks so much is that you can put a cookie sheet in them. Yup that is what floats my boat! I love to make cookies, but I do not love it when the cookie sheets sticks halfway out of the sink and is a pain in the you know what to wash. And the granite, well I have always liked granite. I love the swirls and the textures of it. But I waited years before I got it, because I refuse to pay a fortune for something. One good thing about this economy is that you can get things like granite installed for next to nothing. I love wood countertops also, but my family is not the most careful and I would have to eliminate them if they put a hot pot on the wood, so for the well-being of my family, I went with granite. I used to have laminate, and I did like it, but it just was not as durable, at least for my family. I agree that we should all have what makes us happy. I go with my gut when it comes to design. If it makes me go "ahhh", thats ok, but if it makes me giggle, smile, or maybe even roll my eyes, well than "that's" a reaction. To make up for my granite and farmhouse sink, here is just a little something that I have hanging in my diningroom. Definately not something you see all over:D

I think with the cutesy cottage look I got going with my kitchen the apron sink would be great. however, humongous is not going to happen. That is like an open invitation to my hubby to wait even longer to wash dishes.:p

I'm still not up for the granite. however I don't know what I'd put in. I only know of one stone place here in Billings and have a feeling it wouldn't be all that cheap. Not into the wood either for the same reason as the huge sink.:o

I've had a sink scoped out at a local rehab store for quite a few years. Unfortunately the place is an accident waiting to happen and I fear to try to locate it again. I'm all for digging for treasures as the next guy but teetering walls of ???? is a bit daunting.

Now that I think about it, I'd love a big farmhouse! Not the sink, the actual house! :D I definitely agree with the William Morris quote, "“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." That says it all.

I, too, love having things that make me smile, and I'm sure some of the stuff in my house would make y'all cringe. LOL

Me too. I think it's more appropriate for my cottage/bungalow type home than one of those undermounts that you can barely see.

But, I can definitely agree that you seem to be seeing a LOT of the exact same kitchen designs nowadays....white cabinets with glass doors, pricey "pro" style appliances, granite countertops (although I'm seeing a LOT more marble nowadays....)with a white subway tile backsplash. It does get a bit boring, but I guess its popular for a reason....it always seems to look good :)
