View Full Version : Banquette in a tiny kitchen?

I would love to have a banquette in my kitchen, but my kitchen is really small. Right now, there is a breakfast bar which separates the kitchen from the dining room and I have convinced myself that we could squeeze a small one in there if we take out the breakfast bar. BPG, of course, doesn't agree.
What do y'all think? Would it be too much for such a small room? Really, I'm just thinking about using a high backed bench--which I already have--to keep the rooms separated, and adding a small table, and probably one chair. It does sound like too much, doesn't it? :(

It sounds just right. I love the idea. And you already have the bench ~ how perfect. What will happen to the floor where the breakfast bar comes out? Tell Mr. Black Paint Guy to step aside, you've got work to do!

Lynzee ~ I navigated away from the thread to look at the picture of your window seat and now I can't find the thread again. I love, love, love it! You sure did a great job.

Thanks, Lisa. I love the window seat. It's the perfect place to read stories to the little one while dinner is cooking. I think the entire project cost less than $150 and that included the three cabinets we bought at Lowe's.
I have leftover floor tiles from when I put new flooring in the kitchen so I'll be able to fill in if we remove the breakfast bar. I think the banquette would be so sweet. Unfortunately, my husband can't relate to that description.

I think it's a no brainer if you have the floor tiles. Can you show him some pictures?

I have shown him pictures of what I want and he said it would be fine. He just wants me to find another place for it.
His real reservation is the fact that when we ripped off the old paneling and put up the T1-11, we worked around the breakfast bar because time was such a crucial factor, so he is thinking he'll have to redo that wall and all the trim.

Lynzee, I peeked at your window seat photo and it is wonderful, what a great place to relax. I noticed you have the black and white flooring. My question to you is, is it tile or on a roll and you answered that's it tile.
I've been wavering about doing the black and white floor when we remodel or go with wood. Do you find it hard to keep clean. My luck dirt will fall on the white square 9 times out of 10 :). I'm so worried I will get tired of it. I have a narrow galley kitchen and I wanted to lay the tiles on the diagonal. Any input would be wonderful.

Lynz ~ I think your idea is cute. Why not go for it and if it's not what you wanted then just put everything back. Best wishes and please post some pics.:)

Hi Annie: I did the peel and stick tiles in the kitchen because it was supposed to be a temporary thing and they were super cheap. That was...ummmm, three years ago? They've held up really well though--they've certainly kept their shine!--and they're very easy to clean. I have actually found that the black tiles show more dirt/dust/lint, etc. than the white tiles. Laying the tiles was pretty easy with these because they can be cut with a pair of scissors. I was able to do it in an afternoon. Just took me a while to figure out where to put the first tile. :o
Linn ~ I think my husband is afraid that I will go for it and not like it and he is the one who usually gets stuck putting things back. I think I'm going to try to talk him into giving it a try this weekend though.

Your info about the peel and stick tiles in timely. I'm thinking about trying them in the basement. I had painted the floor, but it didn't hold up.

Thank you Lynzee for the info. I really like the look of the black & white floor but had heard they are hard to clean. Do you have a picture of it in your kitchen you would like to share? With just my DH and I you would think we could keep the floor somewhat clean but we are messy I guess.
If anyone else has this kind of flooring I would love to see pictures.

They really are easy to work with, Lisa, and they are so easy to clean. The manufacturer recommends a particular cleaner, but I use vinegar and water and it works well.
Annie ~ I put two pictures of the kitchen floor in my album. The pictures aren't too good, but I think you can tell what they look like.
Lynzee- I found your album! OMGoodness your home is beautiful! I was looking and looking...geezzzzzzzzz ;)

Thanks, Ladies. It is far from what I want, but it is home. I had such dreams and plans for this place, but then our circumstances changed and we had to scramble in order to get the necessities done and throw the rest together before the little one came, then the work pretty much stopped after she arrived, so what you see will be our starting point...someday.

Oh, Lynzee, I sense a feeling of peacefulness when I look at your home. It's soothing...
Thanks for posting the photos. My former m-i-l had a black/white kitchen and I always admired it - looked classic and stylish, all rolled into one.

Thanks, ChapterTwo. :) The black and white kitchen was an accident of sorts, but I really like it.
I'm getting a little excited here. my friends. I think he is seriously considering trying it this weekend! Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Lynz! Your home is wonderful! I kept wondering why you all didn't post more pics, and then I find you have started albums.
I love the window seat, and I'm crossing my fingers that BPG will go for the Banquette! Great idea.

Lynzee, I hope your idea unfolds, it'll look great. Take lots of pictures. I really love those black and white floors, thank you again for adding the pics.
Gigi, thank you for the compliment on my home, its a cottage work in progress. I have so many ideas and so many looks I want to create there just is not enough time or rooms in the home.

Thanks for the nice comments about our home, Zu. For some reason, I thought you had seen the pictures before.
BPG is off today and has started checking out the space and taking some measurements. Y'all think it's safe for me to really get excited?

well I would think so Lynzee if there's measuring going on - I'm excited for you and looks like everyone else is too! I'd love to do quite a few things to my kitchen area...
and now
I'm trying to find room in my house for a window seat!

Well, the measuring is done. Now it's time to "think on it" awhile. This is the part I really hate. When I don't know if the answer is yes or no. :(
Wannabe ~ I'd put a window seat in every room in my house if I could. I think they are so cozy!
