I found the attached images on this blog (http://www.urbangraceinteriors.typepad.com/), and they are of David Pfieffer's garden (he was in Country Home in 2005). What do y'all think of the galvanized metal planters? Our backyard is mostly terraced gravel w/ native grasses, and I thought this might be a good way to soften things up. Our house has a metal roof and we have cattle wire fencing and trellises so it would definitely not look out of place. Can't wait to hear what you think!!
I'll post photos of our backyard too, so you can have an informed opinion...

Ok, here is a photo of part of my back yard. It was taken last May, so we've done some work since then. I'll try to take some more recent ones this week and post them too. The area I'd like to work with is in the left side of the photos near the house. We have all of these terraces, but no plants around the house.

We are adding a pergola to the deck (and new railing), painting the black parts of the house brown/gray, and are going to stain the deck a similar color.

I also attached a photo of what we want our deck railings to look like (with vines growing on them)...And I'm throwing in a photo of what it looked like when we bought the house since everyone loves a good before and after.

CohenCottage- You have done alot~ looking at the before and after pics. I have NO green thumb, but I (think) what would look great are grasses with bursts of colors through-out the seasons. When one is done blooming another is on it's way.

I LOVE the idea of growing vines on the railing area-OMGooodness that will look beautiful!

Can't wait to see more.

Oh, I love those galvanized planters (they're like my roof)! I've never seen any before. I also like your idea of growing vines up the the deck. You've really done a lot of work~great job!

Thanks for the praise! We worked really hard on the rocks. I like the idea of doing grasses with pops of color. On the embankment, we have a ton of native grasses (with one giant cosmopolitan grass that was free), so that will make it all cohesive!

We already have vines growing up the trellis under our deck, so I will post pictures of that...we used Carolina jessamine and it is so lovely and evergreen too! And I signed a new dog training client up today that owns a painting business, so we might trade out services so I can finally not have a Halloween house!! Woo hoo.

I think the planters will be perfect for your beautiful yard.

CohenCottage:

I LOVE galvanized planters. I have several. I buy the big washtubs at the feed store or Lowe's, drill holes in the bottom and use them in the yard. I like the look and also I like that they are very durable and affordable. I wouldn't mind a couple like the ones in the photo you included.....where would one buy those?

I also love your railing. We did the same thing on my husband's studio....photo attached.

And....I love grasses in pots.

Beautiful, Evelyn~I really love the windowboxes, as well as the containers!

I have an old galvanized washtub that I plant my petunias in every year. It is one of my favorite planters.

CohenCottage, I love the idea of the galvanized pots, and was wondering where to purchase them, never thought to look at a feed store .

Evelyn your home is lovely and looking at your pots I realized I have one. I had used it to hold drinks outside for a party, I'm definitely seeing it converted into a planter. Thanks for that idea.

Evelyn, I LOVE your studio railing, window boxes, and metal tub planters!! It's really lovely.

We have a ton of those tubs too, and we use them for all sorts of stuff (icing drinks for parties, drilling holes in the bottom and using it to contain the garden hose, making dogs sit on them, etc.). I've always bought them with the intention of planting things in them, but they always get used for something else entirely first.

We got our wire cattle panels at Tractor Supply Company, and the metal tubs we have from there and Lowe's. I'm not sure where to find the giant ones like the ones in the inspiration photo, but when I find out, I will let y'all know!

I happen to work for a general contractor construction company and we buy culverts all the time for well, water. When you call around ask about culvert pipe, those pots you have posted look to me like they cut culverts down and buried them into the ground like a raised planter box would be. Farm/ranch would probably have the smaller culverts in stock but those big ones would need to be a pipe place.

Chyna, would a place that sells the culvert pipe also cut them? It seems like they could be used for some interesting raised beds?

I'm not sure but no harm in asking them. :)
