I hope Shabbychick will not mind my quoting her from another thread, but I think attics deserve their own discussion. She said, "I used to live in a house where the attic was an entire third floor with windows and everything. Unfortunately, it also had exposed, old-fashioned wiring and a large collection of wildlife, but renovated, it would have made a wonderful master suite. Why is it that attics now are always tiny spaces with weensie little entrances in a closet or something instead of being useful and easily-accessed space for storage?"
I have wondered the same thing. The attic space in our current 1950 cottage/bungalow is unusable and only accessed for wiring or vent work. I remember the '60s ranch house I grew up in; the attic was accessed by a folding drop-down staircase and had sooooooo much storage. Victorian houses used to have either a nursery or playroom or servants' quarters in the attic. Now they just seem useless! Humph.

I would love to have an old Victorian house with a big attic. Growing up, my grandmother would talk about the 'girl's' bedroom in the house she grew up in. Her father finished out the attic and the five sisters all slept up there. She said it made for a lot of great memories.
My home doesn't have an attic, but I'll enjoy hearing about all of yours.

I have the space for a huge room. Actually the ceiling of my home is solid wood. There is no sheet rock. The floor of the attic has HUGE boards that cross it from side to side. In my dreaming I can see if floored. The entrance to the attic is a tiny little hole in the utility room. It is barely big enough to climb through. I really wish I could have a garconniere on my front porch with a door in the ceiling that enters the attic. It is do-able if I could find a reasonable carpenter.
The original cajun houses, had a staircase for the boys to enter their room in the attic. The girls slept in a room on the other side fo the parents. The only access to the girls room was through the parents room. CLEVER;) If you look at my avatar and look at the picture I posted you can see it would work . Oh if I could only win the lotto....

Oooh!! Memmey that would be fantastic! You know with times the way they are, carpenters and labor in general is very very affordable. It might be something you could do after all. Just might be worth checking into:)

My grandparents house had a real staircase that went up to the attic. I'm not sure how big it is up there though, we were never allowed up there because of the bats.
And my other grandparents have these accesses to areas in their attic that is reached thru the closets upstairs. I guess the attic would be on the same floor as the second storey.
I would love one of those "secret" attics. Like the one in the Velveteen Rabbit, it was so cool!

That would be awesome. At this point I guess I'd be happy with the window seat and window installed at the top of my staircase and the rest of the second storey added. why in the world you'd only build half of a second floor is beyond me. Did those people hate this house that bad?!!!!
