View Full Version : Wall Mural Question

I've been painting a wall in my school library this weekend and want to put up one of those small wallpaper murals that looks like you're looking out a window. Because removing previous wall stickers was a disaster (which is why I had to paint, though I didn't mind having that excuse to move away from basic white) I want to apply the mural to something else and then hang that on the wall with a nail or something so that it'll come off easily if I ever redecorate. So my question is, what can I use? It needs to be something I can easily cut to the shape of the mural (which is basically, but not entirely, square) and it needs to be lightweight because it's going to be right over kids' heads when they sit on the little sofa I've put against that wall. Obviously it also needs to be something the mural will easily and permanently adhere to. I was thinking maybe mdf fiberboard, if I can find a panel of it I can get into my car, or maybe foam core board. But I'm not sure if the mural will adhere to the foam core since it's basically just paper. Plywood is too heavy. Is there something I'm overlooking? Got any suggestions?

Check out this website. They say their product is easily removed and you can design your own.

I was thinking foam core myself, if nothing else use some glue to adhere it to the foam core. then you can just switch back and forth if the mood suits you. :)

I looked at foam core today, but I couldn't find any sheets big enough. I looked at plywood, which was too heavy, and at the mdf panels, which were also really heavy. I spent a lot of time wandering aimlessly and thinking what to do. I think that tomorrow I'm going to go back to Home Depot and buy a cheap roller shade, unroll it, and apply the mural to that. Then I can cut around the stencil and hang it on the wall with a couple of clear push pins. I think if I get a heavy enough roller shade, it'll hang nicely.
Why not heavy fabric~ any fabric for sewing slipcovers, etc... would do. Perhaps it could be pinned, double sided tape, or stapled on? Just some thoughts.... I also think the foam idea is good.

Gigi is on the right track. Didn't they use heavy duck fabric when they made floor clothes and sealed it with gesso. If you did this you could add grommets to the corners to hang it on the wall.
