Does anyone know if you can grow asparagus in containers?

Asparagus is a commitment. You plant the crowns and let them grow for a couple years before you harvest anything. They are shallow-rooted, and require good drainage and warmth. I never heard of them being grown in pots. You can make a special bed for them.

I forget what zone you guys are in...you can probably find a variety that is best for your climate.

That's why I want to put it in containers...when we move I could take it with me! Do y'all remember that place in Heflin AL that the gardening editor from CL recommended last year? I emailed them (b/c that's where I would buy the asparagus), and she said she thought it would be fine as long as I was sure to add lots of compost every year. I'll let everyone know how the experiment goes!

My FIL grows asparagus in beds. He had most of it in containers for a year or two before he planted in the raised beds and didn't have any problem with it.
