Lets share some project pics big or small that we have worked on.
Mine is my front guest bath. We had the house re-piped which meant they cut a huge hole in the bathroom wall and something needed to be done:eek:.
I always wanted to do a red bath so after they patched I set out to paint one wall in the bath red. 7 coats later I really wasn't happy:(, but I lived with it for a year.
We went on a trip and was inspired by this happy green color and decided to repaint the whole bathroom. I'm much happier with the results. Sometimes a little labor and the right choice of paint can make all the difference in how you feel about a room.
OK so who's next to share their project.

Oh, I loved both shades - the red and the green! Two totally different looks and feels, both nice! Well done!

This is a little more on the "craft" side, but recently I made a paper pennant to go above my kitchen sink. I used scrapbook paper, glitter, and ribbon.
On the window sill above the sink, I brought in some berries from outside and made a little berry arrangement. I have two other arrangements like these in white ceramic containers - one on my fridge and a big one on our dining table - I just love the pop of red.
Also, I made some glitter letter magnets to go on my kitchen island. I bought the plain letters at Michaels, spray painted them brown first (the glitter wears off around the edges with handling, so I wanted brown to peek through), and then sprayed them with adhesive. Lastly, I sprinkled fine glitter on it and applied magnets to the back. After taking these photos, I found a few more letters on the back of our front door...the kids have been moving them around, lol. I thought I had more letters than what appeared in the photos!
Most of our house is just upside down with remodeling, drywalling, subfloors - just ick. But I have to, have to, have to have some homey touches thrown in to keep myself from going crazy! I may not have floors, but by goodness, I've got glitter and berries! Ha!
Annie, I hear you about painting with red. It takes soooo many coats - very time and labor intensive for sure!

Kim I remember following your blog on your kitchen redo. I still enjoy seeing pics of it and the new direction your house is going in too.
I always loved your Kim Parker print--so much so that I bought a smaller version and have up in my office at work.:)
Those magnets are so cute, the banner is a great idea and I love the berries over the sink, nothing like a pop of red to make me smile.

Thanks, Annie! You know what - I sold that Kim Parker canvas a few months back - can you believe it? I LOVED it - it made me so happy, but something about it wasn't jiving with the house. My house was like "I like you, pretty Kim Parker canvas, but I don't love you here. You are not 'me'." Ha! I think my house wants to be a more nostalgic and muted kind of cottage and the painting seemed to feel more bold and colorful by the day. I know, strange that I have red cabinets, lol. I had a dear friend that always loved the canvas and searched high and low for one just like it but couldn't find one anywhere. I sold it to her for cheap and while part of me misses it, I feel happy knowing that it got a good home:)
Here are a couple of shots of what I had and what I have now...I replaced it with an antique painting of a cottage (what else?!).

Kim, I really like the new direction you are heading.
I'm so glad your Kim Parker has found a new home, I love her work but it is a bold statement piece. As much as I like her work, the colors never would work with my home therefore it was perfect for the office.
What you have on your mantle now is perfect for your new style, very muted and calm.

That is a great idea to have a cheerful, lively Kim Parker at work - I'm sure it helps to brighten the spirits of everyone that sees it!
Thanks so much - it's all been trial and error with this house and it's nice to finally be down the right path!

Annie ~ love your green bath! It's so light & airy & fresh.
Kim ~ wow your red kitchen is very dramatic! Love the berries too.
Both of you have done great jobs on your rooms!:)
Okay I am drooling at both Annlelinz and Kim's pictures.
First the red bathroom- I would have stopped right there ( 7 coats-yep that's typical of red)-- BUT then I see the make over- WOW I love that too! Nice job- love the decorating! So much talent.
And Kim- how could I forgot the great blog about your cabinets--- it was wonderful! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your kitchen accents-superb talent and creative!
Here is the front of our rambler, and the two car garage. Both will be renovated before our September waterfront wedding
To recap: Exterior front of home: white panel shutters, red door, french white screen door, white post railing on porch, landscaping moving the lighthouse under the two windows, add flowered tree, etc... lamp post in place of lighthouse.
Garage (oh my butt ugly now)- paint a sage green (or barn red???? help!) with white trim.... paint the tin roof to grey....
Any ideas that you see..... I LOVED advice-ANY!159

What a sweet, neat and tidy place, Gigi! It's going to look beautiful painted! Have you thought about window boxes? Those would look sweet. I don't know what kind of landscaping you are doing, but I can see some trailing ivy with some red geraniums looking great with sage green, especially if your front door is red.:)

Annie ~ your bathroom is beautiful!
Kim ~ great job on your kitchen. Seems like I remember the cabinet makeover from CL?
Gigi ~ love your ideas for the new house. I think the window boxes Kim suggested would be a very nice touch. Are y'all going to do the work yourselves?

Gigi, I was watching House Hunters last night and they showed a brick house with black shutters and it looked fantastic. Ever thought of going that direction with the shutters? Love the window box idea too.
Just looked at your pic again, what color are they currently?
Thanks for the idea about window boxes- I like that! And I'm going to see if I can view that House Hunters series online. I have thought about black shutters-hummmm oh my gosh so much to think about! ;)

Gigi I was searching the web for some examples, not a lot of red brick houses with white shutters. Heres a couple with each.
Annielinz- Yes I do like the black shutters on the red brick home- it especially looks like with the white accent around the door. The white looks good too.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention- you ladies are wonderful!!!!
Big hugs

Gigi, you are going to hate me but I found this painting with a window box with red flowers and blue shutters. This is for your home by the water right, how pretty would that be. There are so many blues to choose from, what's a girl to do :D
I just did a search and the black panel shutters really do look great against a red brick home.
Now for the question...what about the double garage? We are renovating that into a cottage/studio ( my soap biz, etc...). First we were thinking the deep barn red like Kim's pic she shared- now we are leaning toward sage green with white trim...
Since I want everything to tie in together- how this?
Black paneled shutters, red door, add white trim around the door entry (will match the white window frames)...two car garage sage green? or red?
OMGoodness Annielinz I just saw ( home with blue shutters )this AFTER I made my latest post--- blue is actually my favorite color- and yes it's by the water---omgoooodness my head is turning- but it's great to hear all the possiblities!
Thank you! Big hugs :D

I'm glad you enjoyed the blue. It all depends on the direction you want the home to go in. Black shutters are tried and true and very traditional and would look great. Any other color like blue pops and makes it a little more cottegey, think french country side.
Now regarding the garage, What's its proximity to the house? Visually are they close. Usually you want to downplay a garage and have it blend with the surroundings. But again you want to make this your studio so it could be more interesting. I need to go back and look at your pics.
Annielinz- I like the sound of french cottagey---the garage is about 50 feet from the house. The driveway goes along the side of the house- garage straight back a bit nearer the water. I'll see if I have a pic of the two together.
The garage doors will eventually be replaced with french doors. Maybe next year?
annielinz
03-01-2009, 09:57 AM
Well...if you are thinking the blue shutters, maybe painting the garage a pale blue or a grey. Love the idea of french doors.
I actually like the "blue" shutter- seaside, etc... the link is for some wedgewood blue...
http://www.shuttercontractor.com/products/panel-shutters/vinyl-shutters/custom-made-shutters/mid-america-P6.aspx
What color front door- it would have a white storm door. Could I go with the barn red- a New England red.

Gigi, yes, that blue also looks great, kind of like the blue shutters and weathered wood ala nantucket look which I covet. The garage painted a shade of that blue would look marvelous!
The best thing to do is do a mock up on the house, does anyone on this board have that ability with their computer? Or get small can of that color and paint a shutter and see how it looks next to the red brick.
Thanks cheapdiva, the red bathroom was nice but ever so cave like and thats the bathroom I put my makeup on in.
Annielinz- I have to thank you- what was I thinking--I know I was thinking very traditional- white/black etc... When you mentioned blue/seaside--it just clicked.
I found a picture I love and so does my husband. It's a picture of a garage with carriage house doors. The color on the doors I would love as shutters too. So maybe-just maybe the cottage/studio will have carriage house doors as show here. Our youngest son can build them-he built some on our carriage house on the house on the other side of the Eastern shore...
So with that said here's a picture I really like- the colors, doors, etc...167

Gigi picture me doing the Meg Ryan, yes yes yes from When Harry Met Sally!! Carriage house is perfect for those doors and loving that blue. I'm so happy for you that it clicked. Now we will all wait in anticipation for the transformation.
And I'm doing the happy "glad to have met you on the CB forum"!!! :D
Okay-- thank goodness you can't see me :D
But really Ms. Annelinz you really opened my eyes to the whole "color" thing.
Thanks!

This is just my 2nd or 3rd day back and I hope I'm not bombarding anyone with all my posts, lol, but I wanted to share a recent ceiling and ceiling fan makeover. I'll share some more photos of the entire room in a moment.
We are working on my future craftroom (so that hopefully I can start crafting for a living in the near future) and this room has basically been our catch all room. It's been an office, a playroom, a sunroom, a junk room - you name it. It is basically a glorified porch in that it stays cold in the winter and hot in the summer. It was an addition that the former owners added and really, I think our ac duct work needs to be reworked or we need to just have stand alone heating and cooling in there - I don't know. But for many reasons, this room was kind of just neglected. But I needed the space, so we decided to try and pretty it up. It's still a work in progress, but I thought I'd share what we've done to the ceiling and walls. We had old, improperly installed sunlights removed when we reroofed a few years back. This left ugly plywood holes and at this time, replacing the entire ceiling isn't an option. I needed to figure out how to make the plywood work for me so I decided to make them look like windows to mimic the existing windows. I painted in a faux sky and added a little sparrow silhouette in one of the "windows". Hubs made the "windows" and repainted the ceiling a crisp, shiny ultra white.
The fan, which was gross - I know (see the dust!), is essential to keep the room cool, so it had to stay. Being the cheap girl that I am, hehe, I just had hubs remove the fan and the other lights and I spray painted them using dark brown camouflage paint, of all things! I think it looks a lot like oil rubbed bronze.
Ahhh a special space for crafts! I love mine---when we built our carriage house- I grabbed the chance for my "own" workshop...
Kim love what you have done- can't wait to see more! Superbly talented!

We patched up the walls that had sustained rain damage (before the new roof was added) and I mixed up a shade of robin's egg blue. I am LOVING this color and it's amazing how well it works with RED, dark brown, white and cream- the primary colors in my home.
We are working on painting the steps and stoop now. They are going to be a dark chocolate brown and the risers (is that what they are called?) will remain white. My business will be revolving around a chocolate theme, so I'm thinking this will work perfectly! I picked up some dark chocolate velvet drapes at Lowes the other day and can't wait to install them when the room is finished. I'm thinking about using a white, distressed, wooden curtain rod and finials.

Kim, that space is going to be a fantastic place to craft and create and I love the drapery panels.
I would love to had a dedicated space, those of you that do are so lucky.
Gigi, found one more pic for you. I am glad I found this forum also.
Yep- the blue shutters...I'm loving them---really! :D
I found some black hardware to add to them too. Thank you sooo much for all your help and advice!!!!
Here's a picture of our present carriage house on our property of our "main" house (not on the water)- inside our carriage house is my workshop. This picture was taking in May getting ready for my son's wedding last year- and my entrance to the workshop...186

I used Pratt and Lambert (well a P & L color that Sherwin-Williams mixed up for me) and only needed one coat. I think there was so much pigment in that can that it expanded. Bought an entire gallon of the paint and barely made a dent in it. :o I do love red bathrooms but hear ya on changing the color can make all the difference in the world. :)

After a very long search for the perfect black and white extra long shower curtain, I had a local person make one for me. Here are some photos of the existing curtain. Love the print, but it's too close in color to the wall, and it's way too short. The new curtain is a graphic b/w damask. I think I like it, but I'm not sure yet. Is it too much pattern? Is it overwhelming? It's so different than before, that I can't quite tell how I feel about it. Here are a couple of extra pics of the mirror/sink and the new PB lidded baskets.
Hi CohenCottage-- Oh how I LOVE this! I really love both curtains- and the shelving with the basket---how cute.
What color is on the walls? On my computer is a light sea blue? Am I close
Great pictures to share!

You're talking the queen of the curtain switch-er-roo here.
I like them both actually, the calmness of the tone on tone and the boldness of the new one.
Have you thought of having the same seamstress add some material to the old shower curtain to lengthen it and then have it on hand when you want a change?
The baskets look great BTW, I'm so jealous of your storage.
I think if you add some black and white prints to the wall with black frames it'll help spread around the dark color. Looks great

Thanks Gigi! The wall color is 'Palladian blue' by Benjamin Moore, and it's my favorite paint color EVER. Our bedroom is the same color, and it's restful and doesnt' look like a baby boy's room. In the bathroom, I diluted it 50% for the ceiling and that turned out really well.
Annielinz - It would be great to lengthen the blue curtain b/c I love to change things out. I did ask a seamstress about adding onto the curtain, but we haven't been able to find the right fabric yet. The shower curtain originally came from Anthropologie, so I haven't been able to find another one to use as extra fabric. I'm going to hang onto it and keep searching for extra fabric, but if that doesn't work, then I'm going to turn it into pillows or a throw for our guest bedroom. It's reversible, and the other side is the same pattern in lime green.
Other plans for that room include replacing the stick on paper shade with a plantation shutter and adding hardware that I got at the PB outlet 2 years ago and still haven't put up. I would love to add a train rack above the toilet and some black and white accessories too.
Nobody should be jealous of our storage, though, b/c that's it...no linen closet, no pantry, no nuthin'! The bathroom mirror was actually our first project (while the house was still under construction)...It was my grandmother's and I painted it black!

How about a border of plain off-white for the blue curtain? Those should be easy enough to find, well if you happen to have a store that carries hotel fabric shower curtains. :o:D Or even some plain ol' eyelet fabric would be sweet. Guess it depends on the mood/look you want in there. :)
Thanks Cohencottage for the paint color- we actually have a Benjamin Moore near own beach house and are using their paints.. Yippee! I love that color too---thanks for sharing ;)

Here is a little project I worked on yesterday. It should still be a "work in progress" but I don't know if I want to just leave well enough alone or not, hehe.
The first photo is a painting I bought at Goodwill. I loved it, but the green and yellow background didn't work for me. I'm a huge robin's egg blue fan, so I "altered" the painting to work with my decor. It lacks the depth and shadow as the original, but for now, it's working for me:)

Here is a chair makeover project. I found four chairs and a small dining room table at goodwill a couple of years ago for just $20. I made the dining table into a coffee table (I think I shared those photos already? I don't remember...) and for the chairs, I'm painting them. And I do mean painting them, upholstery and all! I painted the gold velour a dark chocolate brown. If looks and feels like leather or soft vinyl. I just used regular latex paint in a satin finish. I painted the chair frame white and brushed a bit of the brown on the edges for a distressed look. I was then going to paint over the brown edges with white and sand down slightly to the dark brown. But a while after I photographed this chair, I decided that I didn't want it to look distressed and repainted it in solid white. Two chairs like this will be going in my craft studio when it's complete.

I love the black and white shower curtain. Sometimes you can find old anthropologie items on e-bay. You can post a "searching for" with a picture of your item as well I think. The bathroom floor is really great with the basket-weave pattern.
Gigi, I can't wait to see how this fall wedding turns out. I am so thrilled you ended up with blue shutters. I really LOVE blue. Annielinz - - you find a lot of great photographs of architecture - - do you just google? Where do you find these things?

Okay...all of you who have painted BIG things like a hutch...I would love to hear (once again) how wonderful they have turned out!
I have a long story to tell you what happened to my hutch last week...but for now I am almost ready to paint my dark pine hutch white. The surface of the buffet part is sort of like a laminate - very shiny. I read somewhere that you need to use KILZ on that (Did I read that here?) So I bought that.
Of course, at a later date, then I'll be painting all the chairs from the dining room table too. But...baby steps! :o
I've had this hutch since 1975, so why am I worrying? What's the very worst that can happen?
I'm waiting for my kids to ask me why I'm painting everything in the house WHITE. lol Cottage, my dears, cottage...;)
*************
And...what do I do about the drawer pulls? The ones that are on are very colonial looking, but I'm afraid if I take them off, there's probably an imprint of them on the soft pine. Haven't had time to take a peek. What did you do?
vintage girl
05-21-2010, 08:42 AM
Even if the drawer pulls leave an impression, you can just sand it out and you will not even be able to tell the difference. I am a terrible painter, hubs does all the painting around our house. If you use the Kilz, you will get a fantastic finish. It works wonderful. But be prepared it is very very strong odor. Make sure that you open all the windows and doors and I would run a fan also. I was wanting to paint the top of my dining room table a creamy white to match my new french country hutch, but hubs talked me out of it:confused: I may still have to do it, or maybe just paint the legs white. Actually it would be hubs doing the painting, so maybe that is why he talked me out of it:p He paints and than I do the glazing and distressing. I look forward to seeing the pics of your hutch when it is done. By the way, Lowes has some fantastic crystal knobs that are a great price. I bought them and put them on my hall linen cupboards. They are less than $5 bucks each and are very large, round and have an etched finish.

Chapter Two I haven't regretted painting my hutch or kitchen table, or dresser or....yes I've painted a lot of my furniture. My hutch is also from the 70's and was a inexpensive set. The dark oak was not doing it for me. So I went the black route and have been very happy with the results.
Crystal knobs would be lovely. I've seen people just paint right over the hardware and I'm beginning to like that look also.
Please post pictures when your done!

RoseMary, I'm still dragging my feet.
Well, I shouldn't even say that - I've been trying to get the yard in shape...am digging up the patio area and hope to put in blocks (sometime before Labor Day, at this rate!)
So, thanks for the nudge, RoseMary...I needed that. It really won't take that long - I just need to START.
And annielinz, thanks for also helping give me confidence to paint that very dark pine furniture...Actually, that probably has something to do with why I'm procrastinating. It was furniture my ex and I bought when we got married, so maybe I feel funny about painting it. But I won't, anymore!

Sorry guys- yes opening day was Sept 1. It has been so busy here I barely get time to do much other than work.
Funny thing - two of the big furniture pieces sold before opening day but the lady was kind enough to leave them there until the 4th so my booth would look pretty opening day.
I also sold all my shelves, burlap table runners and a couple of banners.
So, Labor Day weekend I did just that- I labored all weekend with my paint sprayer- painting and distressing and sealing 13 pieces of furniture.
I am taking a big one down to the booth tomorrow with two small folding chairs and 6 table runners.
All of this has been hard. It is crazy trying to keep that booth stocked while also trying to have enough stuff to sell at Cameron Day Oct 2 in a 10x20 booth. So, while I don't consider it fun right now I am sure it will be better once Cameron day is done. Then I can just concentrate on the booth.
Well I will take more pictures tomorrow of the furniture pieces and share them later on.
What is up with you all?

I love the idea of flower boxes and I'm planning on putting some on the windows in the front of the house. Since we have a new house our front yard is a blank canvas. My husband wants to do something beachy since our house is blue and we live on a lake. He is thinking about piers with ropes. I may have to start looking for an anchor.
I'll post some pics of the front of the house and maybe you all can give us some ideas.
