Has anyone read the March issue of Coastal Living? My mom used to subscribe a few years ago and I didn't like it much then (seemed too "high-end" to me) but I definitely noticed a change in this latest issue. Looks like some of the Cottage Living folk moved over there.....Heather Chadduck and Lindsey Ellis Beatty to name a few. Looks like they also have a new editor.

LOVED Heather's bathroom re-do section....definitely seemed like something right out of CL. Overall, I liked the more cottage-y sort of focus that this issue had, a lot of the homes featured were modest and creative.

I liked this issue, too. I was just looking at the bathrooms in there yesterday and wondering if there was anything I could incorporate. I liked the previous issue, too, though, with the purple furniture on the porch (featured on the cover). I love bright colors even when the theme isn't tropical. Purples, bright pinks, neon yellows, and grassy greens make me happy. I just got my new Country Living in the mail tonight. I'm not feeling too well today, so I might just go to bed early, curl up with my magazine, and spend the evening reading.

I got it and you are right it does seem a bit Cottage Living. And actually enjoyed it this time but not enough to subscribe. Isn't our Rex there now too?

I'll have to check it out tonight. While I am getting Coastal as my "substitute" magazine for CL (like there could ever be a substitute!!), my daughter is getting Southern Living. We both live in Wisconsin!

And no sooner did I subscribe to Better Homes than Country Home folded and said this is the magazine I would get instead. Boy, I hope this will end soon.

That is pretty much why I refused either offer for my CL subscription. I not only don't live on a coastline but I'm in MT. South is not even in my vocabulary here except I live south central MT. Southern Living I don't think would cut it there either. :p

I got my April issue of Country Living yesterday and spent the evening reading it. It's really one of the best issues they've done in awhile. There was a wonderful set of instructions for making a lamp out of old mixing bowls, teapots, cups, and saucers that requires no drilling at all. The lamp socket cord runs down the back of the lamp, and the socket and lamp harp are secured inside a cup with self-hardening clay. The other items are stacked and glued together with super glue gel. It is so cute, and it would make a delightful one-of-a-kind gift just using old thrift store items. I can't wait to try it. I also really like their "What is it, What is it worth?" column where people send in pictures of things and they tell them what it is, whether it's antique or reproduction, and how much to insure it for. I've learned a lot about different styles of things by reading that over the years. There was a fairly interesting article about shopping at the nursery for starter plants. In spite of the fact that I was sick, I spent a pleasant evening poring over the articles and pictures. There was even a great article about a woman who decorated her vacation house in pink! That's right up my alley!

Shabby I agree, I loved the lamp made from teacups and tea pots what a fun project that would be! I also got some good info regarding planting and she addressed my problem with color combinations, keep the cool and warm colors in separate beds.

I live in the South. It doesn't cut it here either.

I have received three issues of Southern Living since CL folded and I got switched to something they, in their infinite wisdom, decided I would like instead. I actually looked through the first issue and found absolutely nothing of interest and, after I skimmed the second issue with the same result, I took the third issue out of the mailbox and tossed it in the trash without so much as a glance. Not that it matters to them--they already have their money.

I LIVE ON THE COAST and wasn't offered Coastal Living, go figure  Instead, I am getting Sunset. Which I actually kind of like, despite the fact that the content is nothing like Cottage Living.

Lynzee, I'm disappointed to hear that Southern Living isn't any good. They sell it up here in the NW (why, I don't know) and I was hoping it might be worth a read since I think some of the other Cottage Living editors are now working there.

When I was told what replacement magazines I'd get for the ones that folded, I e-mailed them and told them I wanted a refund instead. I have received refunds for all three of the subscriptions, so you might try that instead of just continuing to get something you don't want. I had to e-mail BH&G and contact them through their "missing issue" link and explain what I wanted. There was no link for "get a refund" but when I explained what I wanted, I got my refunds. I'm glad, too, because it was a lot of money.

So the website at cottagesandbungalowsmag.com has been down for maintenance every since I joined this board. I am wondering if anyone knows whether it will ever be coming back online again or whether the hillaryblack website is really the new cottages and bungalows official website.

Since it automatically switches over to the other site (Hilary's?) I would say that is the new site.

I didn't read the whole magz but I saw some article.
for the March issue they include the reviving of beach house.

And aside from that they also feature the coastal art work
that can be found at page 90-91: March 2009.

Coastal Living occupies a unique and well-defined niche.
Each year Coastal Living magazine constructs an "Idea House" in a
different shoreline community.

I found an article in the September issue of Southern Living regarding "Dwarf Mondo" Grass. It grows well in the shade, but it has to be planted in little plugs. It is incredibly labor intensive; so, I do not know that my entire backyard will be covered in the stuff, but it looks like the perfect thing for cottage lovers to wedge between those pretty hansel and gretel stone pathways. They also have an interesting fall article about "mums" - - for me, mums are a hard thing to love because they are so "carnations for the grocery store" invoking images of - - well - - big harvest displays as if we all grow corn. With that said, they had some great ideas on how to use the seasonal plant decoratively while maintaining the color. The house plan of the month would have fit right in over at Cottage Living - - it was a little large, but it fit the bill for a mountain retreat with enough bedrooms and bathrooms to really live there. With that said, I only received something like three editions of Southern Living - - my Mom just happened to hand me this one when I was leaving her house the other day. I do enjoy Coastal Living when I bump into it. I also pick up Cottages & Bungalows whenever I see it, but I am really missing some of the everyday "how-to" ideas and DIY articles we used to see regularly. Needless to say, I am feeling a little uninspired in a season when the creativity is usually brimming. Thanks for the heads up on Coastal Living. I will check it out. By the way - - welcome Marcy.

Okay, I just clicked around the fall decorating thread over here and I love, love, LOVED, some of the decorating ideas with the white pumpkins in the window boxes and the harvest decor - - let's just say that I don't usually see that level of classy-creativity in "my-neck-of-the-woods" - - some of you who love to plant mums would like that article in Southern Living. It talks about stick with the deep reds and coppers to get the most bang for your buck. You are also supposed to pinch dying leaves regularly, but that the darker colors can withstand the "wilting" a little longer. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone does in the upcoming season!
