Jabberly's saying "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right", reminded me of last Sunday morning when I visited the nursing home.
I went in at 9am for the Sunday morning activities. I did my one one ones, hand massages with scented lotions, looking thru nature books with a man, and folding wash cloths with an 105 yr old lady.
The 105 yr old lady....she likes to do "work". She asked the activities lady if there was any "work" for her to do. She was given a small basket of white wash cloths. They were in terrible shape. They were mostly old towels cut into the size of a washcloth, with terribly frayed edges. The resident asked me for scissors, because she wanted to "fix" the frayed edges. I got scissors, and sat down with her, and I cut the frays off, and would give them to her and say "Is this okay?", to which she would say....It is not perfect, when you do a job, you do the best you can, that is what my mother taught me". Bless her heart. There was no "fixing" this pile of rags. I did my best. They belonged in the trash. To this lady, she was doing a job of folding towels, and she just hated that they were in such bad shape. She just couldn't understand, and it really bothered her. I love the wisom of the older generation....they indeed knew/know what it means to do a good job, and want to do a good job, no matter what a person does.
I made a trip to the Thrift Shop last night...they had everything 50% off. I purchased about 12 pieces of baby clothing, washed them up, and put them in a little basked to take to the nursing home, so that S. will have work to do. (It was mentioned by the activities assistant that she would really enjoy folding little baby clothes.....why they didn't buy them before is beyond me). I am also headed to the store to buy her a pack of pretty colorful washcloths....anyone wanting to do work at age 105 certainly deserves some pretty things to fold. :D I think I am really going to enjoy this "job" if I ever find a fulltime position. :D
