View Full Version : What do you think about a RED DOOR???

262This weekend we put up our new Wedgewood blue shutters with black hinges on our beach home...and some new exterior lights.
SO my friends---what color door??? I LOVE red-a deep dark barn red-would that work???? AND we are replacing the screen door with a french pane full door... Help! The RED would be the same red in the light house....
Next we have to do the landscaping in the front under the windows, and power wash the brickwalk way and see if it's okay to keep....
Keeping in mind our wedding here is in September :D:);)

I LOVE those shutters, Gigi!
I tend to be the person who places items symmetrically on a fireplace mantel or on a table...and so I know I'm the "matchy matchy" type. Soooooo, for continuity, would you consider the door to match your beautiful new shutters? You might want to get a couple pieces of red and blue poster board (cardboard) and tape each color up, one at a time, to the door and step back and see what you think. Sometimes it's hard to visualize, so I need to actually SEE something.

I love your shutters! I'm not sure about the red door. It might blend in too much to the brick. The nice thing about paint is, you can always paint over it if you don't like it.

The shutters look great!
I'm also thinking the red may not be enough of a color contrast to draw you into the front door. Are you going to beef up the trim around the door with more white to make the front pop more? What color would you do the screen door in, the same as the door?
A blue door to match the shutters would look great too and then add a basket with red geraniums to the front door for the red you want.
Heres some various pics I found of red doors and then a multi- color collage :)

I think the barn-red in the lighthouse would be perfect Gigi. The house I grew up in was a deep blue-grey and had a black garage door and some wrought iron and that kind of red door. It does "work" in a lovely way. With that said, some of those doors just posted were AWESOME!
More windowboxes / shutters / and a paint job are in our curb appeal future. My windows are not even at all; so, without redoing them, I would have to leave a couple out of the shutter-mix, but I could do a FUN door. That might just do the trick.
Anyway, the shutters look great. By all means, let us know what you decide.
Bye!
Jenny
Thank you everyone for your advice~ And Annie great pics again! Your pics of the blues shutters before is what grabbed my attention-thanks!
I will hold up some color charts against the door first- the blue would be nice too...so many choices. It wouldn't be for acouple weeks so I have time to soak all this "color" in.

I agree about the red not having enough contrast with the brick - how about painting the trim around the door black and the door the same blue - to match the shutters and the iron scroll work on them?
P.S. did you cut your husband's head off the picture on purpose?!
OMGoodness~ I didn't even notice my husband's head was cut out of the pic :p
I am thinking perhaps the door wouldn't be that much of a contrast with the brick---that's what I LOVE about this board- great advice from everyone...
Thanks!
Hi Gigi!
I love love love the shutters and the hardware especially. As far as the red door goes, I do like them but I think it really just depends on which shade of red you choose, (I'm leaning towards a more darker red, but it's hard to picture w/o actually seeing it.)
Have you considered taking a picture of your door and then uploading it to your computer and then editing it in photoshop or editor and trying to see how different colors would look? That's what we did when we wanted to paint our white shutters. It made picking out a color so much easier and it was easy to compare all the different colors on the computer so no guessing how it would look.
Cant wait to see the finished result :)

Gigi ~ I agree with shabbychick and cheapdiva that a red door would blend too much with the house.
How about a deep charcoal color or black? You could even paint the trim around the windows the same or similar color. Please keep us posted & best wishes.
As always you guys are just wonderful helping me out- I really do think about what each and every one of you have given advice on.
First I'm thinking if I don't trim out the door in white/black-then RED should be out... perhaps a slight deeper blue---ummmmm soooo many choices to spruce up this wannabe cottage by the sea. :D

I also love the blue shutters and hardware! Immediately I could see a black door and again agreeing with what I read previously to add the red into the mix with flowers!

Gigi did you paint your door? Did you go with red?
I painted our exterior door red last weekend but it rained all week so I didn't get the steps painted.... another project 3/4's done....
Hi Heather- Thanks for asking- we haven't painted the door yet---sometime in the near future- and we haven't decided about the color yet....
So many choices

Hi, a nice deep, almost burgundy red would look great with the brick.

I think it looks better if the door and shutters are different colors. Use the rule of three-never have fewer than three colors on your house.
Hi everyone-
We did paint our front door a deep brick red- if I can take a pic today- I'll post it later.

Personally, I don't like like red doors but the picture you have would go well with it. A dull, deep red would look nice for that house.
I always liked dark wooden doors.
