Hello there and good morning! I'm hoping y'all could help me with colours....

See, I've been working on my kitchen since last October - I've had exterior walls blown out, redesigned it completely, and new everything except appliances. It still feels 'blah' to me though! I'm going for the cottage look but not too feminine looking, does that make sense?

We are in the process of making corbels for the bottom of the upper cabinets and "feet" for the bottom of the lower cabinets. Also, there is more trim work to be installed above the cabinets and throughout the room.

The wall colour can be changed.
The backsplash can be changed - it is just blackboard paint with a little piece of trim to 'finish' it.
The floor colour can (and will) be changed - I painted 1X6's with indoor/outdoor porch paint.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. Your kitchen is beautiful! I love your cabinets and those great big windows to let in light. It seems to me like your kitchen is big enough and light enough that it could tolerate some strong color. I am partial to yellow myself, but I could even see your walls painted a bright red, which would complement the blue and red curtains. You might consider tiling the backsplash. I could see basically white tiles with "splashes" of red and yellow here and there. The floor looks beautiful to me just the way it is.

Thank you.

I didn't want to tile the backsplash because there are too many 'lines' already - lines on the cupboard doors, lines on the wood floor, and lines on the butcherblock. I've been scouring wallpaper books for something more 'circular' but can't find anything. That's why I just painted it....

Perhaps you could stencil a design along the backsplash with that three-dimensional paint that looks kind of like plaster. I can't remember what it's called, but I think it can be tinted any color you like.

I love your cottage kitchen! Are you going to be keeping the curtains in there? I think picking a happy green would look wonderful.
Also loving the blackboard backsplash.

I'm at work so I can't post a pic but if you look on my album you will see my green bath, its along the line I'm thinking for you. It is a much more brighter green than shows in the album.

Oh I can't use green (although that is very pretty, Annielinz) because of my dining room.

I can change the window treatments - I made them out of napkins and placemats as I can't sew!

That 3 dimensional paint for the backsplash sounds interesting, I think I'll look into it!

What color is the dining room again its looks like a aqua-ish blue? Do you want it to compliment it, go a shade lighter or darker or different all together?

You could pull a color out of the dining room drapes and use that in the kitchen.

Pretty kitchen ~ love white cabinets white is so cottagey.
You could try painting the kitchen a lighter or slightly darker version of your dining room paint (which is very pretty). I'm partical to soft green as Annie suggested ~ my kitchen is green.;)
Any color would work it's a nice sized room with great windows. Best wishes & please keep us posted.

I love the red floor, just the way it is! I would think about doing a crackle finish on the walls...a red undercoat with a white topcoat, letting the red crackles show through. It would be really unique, and a conversation piece.

You have all that great space on top of the cabinets...If you don't have any collections of your own with touches of red, I'd go to a flea market/garage sales and pick some up. The kitchen is so lovely, but needs some things to bring interest - things to look at.

While I think your curtains are really adorable, if it was my kitchen, I'd love to run with the red/white theme, and maybe do a 50's picnic tablecloth check.
What a beautiful room it is - please keep up up-to-date on what you decide!

Ok!
I've got lot's more done on the kitchen:
- window shelves up (the ones over the big windows and the ones beside the sink window)
- corbels on
- cabinet feet on
- just repainted the floor (it was burgundy...)

Still need to:
- crown molding above cabinets
- crown molding between wall & ceiling
- touch up paint

Now I'm thinking I want to fade the curtains, make them more "antique-y". Actually, that's how I found this forum - it was your thread on fading fabrics. Plans is to let them sit outside in the sun for a week and see what happens!

Waddaya think?

Heather,

I like how you added the feet to the cabinets. We were thinking of doing of that in our kitchen, and after seeing how it looked in the before and after pics you took, I think we'll do it!

Looks really cute!

LOVE IT!
It looks wonderful, so crisp and clean. I can't remember if you said this, but is it a complete DIY project or did you hire out or a little of both?
The corbels really add a nice touch to the cabinets, love the display shelves, and the floor looks great. I do like the pop of color in the drapes, but if faded is the way you want to go it'll work, you have a real eye for things, so whatever you decide it'll be perfect for your space.
This is a little off topic but your pics are so clear looking what kind of camera are you using? They just jump out at you.
Thank you so much Heather for sharing pics with us, it's really is giving me the push to get started on my own kitchen.

Everything looks great, Heather! I love the look of the feet on the cabinets too. A blue vase or something might look nice on the cabinet to the left of the window, to pick up the color in your cute curtains. Great job!

Thank you very much. I'm proud of how it looks, it has taken us ALOT of work, DH and I.

Here's a before and after pic:

Oh and my camera is just an Olympus Camedia C-60 Zoom (6.1 megapixel)

All that hard work really paid off, Heather.

I'm going to paint the cabinets in the kitchen where I'm moving, white, with red glass knobs...the color scheme is going to be red/white.

Beeee-autiful! What a wonderful space you have created! Those cute shelves by the window remind me of the ones in the last house I lived in. A really nice retro touch (and I really miss the display space!). I think I like the pop of bright color in the curtains, so if your fading technique doesn't work, don't despair. They're fine just like they are.

Color me impressed!!
