View Full Version : Where does everyone live?

Do you live in a cabin or cottage or bungalow or apt or big old house or mobile home? Where does everyone live? Anything can be "cottage" - it's more than just a house style - it's a state of mind too.

Meridon

I appreciate the "frame of mind" part. . .since my house is new construction!:p I hope to live in a bungalow or foursquare one day, but for now I'm dreaming out in the suburbs in my 2 year old Tudor-wannabe "cottage."

We live in a small cordwood cabin that we built ourselves. We have approximately 975 square feet of liveable space~1010 if you count a small loft area that we mostly use as storage.

We were living in a 650 square foot mobile home while we built the cabin, so it seemed rather large when we first moved in!

Lynzee

I definitely agree that cottage is a state of mind!

Our main house is an L shaped ranch rambler, but it is very "cottagy". Our home at the beach is a cottage but, oddly enough, seems less "cottagy" than our main house.

My house is a 1400 sq ft cedar shake....probably more cabin like than cottage. Attached is a
photo. I am in Washington State.

We are moving! My apartment is more like a "flat" for some reason. Anyway, we are moving into our first little cottage. Rosemary, our square footage is almost identical. I may need some storage tricks! As well as furniture arrangement tricks. Anyway, cottage is of course a state of mind; so, never fear if you are in new construction or a rental something-or-other. Cottage is a belief that living a little bit more simply, splurging on the really cool stuff, and prioritizing family and friends over some of the modern day helter-skelter will lead to a more peaceful and fulfilling life.

I can't wait to hear more ... good thread!

We live in a craftsman-style home that is new construction (four years old). While my dream is to live in something old and smaller, we are right where we need to be at the time. We have three kids who attend great neighborhood schools. We live in a cul-de-sac and we love our neighbors. We're doing our best to "old it up" and add authentic craftsman touches.

We also spend part of our time on Whidbey Island at our family beach home. It is a cottage in that we remodeled and furnished it recycled and second-hand furniture and decor. My family has always been about preserving what is there and not doing those "wipeout" remodels. While the beach house seems quite 70's-ish, it is still comfy and a great place to sit and watch storms blow in off the Straits of Juan de Fuca.

When our kids have grown and moved out on their own, we'll move into MUCH smaller digs. I want a home I can clean in 20 minutes or less.

I live in Western Washington, about 35 minutes north of Seattle.

We live in a small 1927 Craftsman style home built of rock. Since we are in Laura Ingalls Wilder country and I'm a huge fan of hers I posted some photos in an album for anyone interested in her.:)

Well....ummm, I live in a red cottage. Really red. The girls that have known me for a while got to follow the painting saga. It was primed hot pink for about a day. LOL

I bought my little house on a blind bid. The owners lost it in bankruptsy about 10 years ago. It was built in 1937. It was a oil field workers house. The Interstate Oil company built it. Interstate sold to Esso then to Exxon and now Exxon Mobil.( that is the progression of the oil company)
It is solid wood. The interior walls are solid. The roof is center matched wood and it has a slate roof. It is not a fancy home but it is mine alone and I am very proud of it. If I told you what I paid for it you would be shocked. Let's just say that alot of cars cost more than I paid for my home.

It is under 2 great old live oaks and the front is in shade 24/7/365. Wait maybe I better wait till summer to verify that since the hurricane I may have more sun. The trees took a terrible beating. Anyway I live in true cajun country.
Here is the little REALLY red house..... La petite maison rouge

Hi Evelyn,
Yep that is what they are. I have so much shade that they don't really thrive. I am thinking about moving them somewhere in the yard. It is just hard to find the right spot for them. I wonder what would be good in the DEEP shade by my porch. I thought about cast iron plants or maybe fern. Any thoughts?

Memmy - what a great house & yard - love the little salon out back too - it reminds me of a dollhouse - so cute!:)

Hey Rosemary , LOL do you remember the night mare of the paint job???:p
I don't want to have to do that for a lonnnngggg time. If the paint falls off...oh well.
Rosemary this is a nice site for us. I have to go today and try to find the magazine at Barnes and Noble. It is so comforting to see everyone making contact with each other.
The magazine has gone out of their way to help us and I am grateful.

I hope your Thanksgiving was nice. My sister and I are trying to close Poppa's house up and get it ready for sale. A lifetime of " stuff" to account for...ugh. I ate pie and then I ate more pie, I think my heart was big and I ate to medicate myself..LOL We are not telling Pop, it would give him another stroke for sure. He thinks he is coming home and that is where most of my angst lies. I'm glad I am back home and I am really enjoying this site.

It's great to see ya'll here.:)

Memmey,

My husband looked over my shoulder and said "What a nice house!" when he saw the picture of yours.

I'm sorry about the angst you're going through with your dad. You're a good daughter and you're doing the very best for him.

memmey
12-01-2008, 07:42 AM
I knew I liked your husband..LOL especially since he is a musical guy. Every time I listen to Chris Botti I think about ya'll.
Leez ,Poppa is in a nice place and they are caring for him very well. His little mind though is real confused and that part is hard.
I never thought about how much "stuff" we accumulate. We are having a estate sale weekend after next. Putting price tags on your childhood memories is awful . All the money goes to Pop"s diaper fund.
I DO NOT WANT TO GET OLD...too late.:p

Lisa S
12-01-2008, 07:52 AM
There are very few graceful ways of getting old. I guess taking care of our parents when they need it is another lesson. Scary, sad, exhausting, but somehow important. Remember hearing about how folks used to lay out their dead themselves? My grandmother said it was a loving way to say goodbye to someone.

Deep stuff.

I keep looking for a picture of my house to post here. I might have to go outside and take another one.

Mem, the painting was a nightmare~but it turned into a beautiful reality in the end!!

My Thanksgiving was very nice. And, pie can be a comfort, that's for sure! I'm glad you are not telling your papa that you are selling his house. We never told my grandmother~it just would have upset her too much. She did mention a lot about 'going home' and we just went along with it. Getting old is hard!! My parents are in a senior citizens apartment building and it is nice for them.

I'm so glad we have this new site to come to and I'm anxious to get a look at the magazine, too.

Hi Cohen Cottage!

Now, I'm off to look at Breezy's kitchen!

Hi CohenCottage! Glad you joined us!

Memmey....I love, love, love the red! Did I miss this on the CL site during one of my extended absences? You have such a beautiful home.

It's so hard when our parents get older. I cared for my mom during the last year and a half of her life. It was hard because she required around the clock care and it was just me, but I feel fortunate that we were able to share so much during that time.

I have been looking for a picture of my house too, but all I can seem to find is the avatar I had at CL which shows a little of the front porch. I'll keep looking...

For some reason I really looked at your house Memmey and you know what? I think I have the bigger version of your house! Except mine was a railroad worker house. I think..... :o

I love red houses, but such a huge leap of faith. Would love to have painted mine red but it just didn't seem right. I also liked the hot pink on your house. Guess I'm fond of pink houses too.

Cohencottage hi!

Memmy, I did not know Fatsia japonica was so versitle.....grows here in the northwest and news to me but also in the south. I have many sword ferns around my house.....I love ferns because they are easy care. They do grow in sun, but really thrive in shade. All day shade.
I have them on my back acre.....so I can dig them up and move them closer to the house.

Oooooooo, I'm late to the party again!

Breezy asked "Do you live in a cabin or cottage or bungalow or apt or big old house or mobile home? Where does everyone live?"

Hubby and I live in the Colorado mountains at 10,100 feet, where we are building a tiny cottage ourselves - I still can't believe little ol' me climbed up on the roof and nailed the sheathing to the trusses!!!

We love it here. We can see the Milky Way at night, and often stop what we're doing to enjoy the view, which is always changing. This time of year, the Continental Divide is pink when the sun rises and reflects against the snow.

I love hearing where everyone is from. Breezy put it perfectly when she wrote "Anything can be "cottage" - it's more than just a house style - it's a state of mind too."

Zu, I laughed when you mentioned climbing up on the roof and nailing the sheathing~I did the same thing on our house--and I hate heights:eek:. I kept wanting to tie myself with a rope or something, but dh kept insisting it wasn't that steep on the part I was on. Guess he was right~I survived!

Zu~I'd love to see your view. The pink sounds so pretty. Down this way, we only see the Milky Way a few times a year.

That laying out thing reminds me of the movie "The Others". Sorta creepy but also pretty special. :)

Don't think I answered the original question but I live in Montana in what I describe as a bungled-low cottage type home. From what I've gathered from one of the neighbors who actually has a clue, most of the homes on my block were built by the railroad for the workers. I know the house next door to mine wasn't since the original owner built it for his daughter, I actually know more about her house than mine!! :o Anyhow I'll say it is a bungalow that a tornado dropped a shed on the roof. I'll surprise you all someday with pics of what I speak of. Others laughed at that description until they saw it and then had to agree. :p

I live in a 1955 farmhouse in Northwest Texas. It's about 1500 square feet 3 bedrooms, 1 bath and sits right in front of a irrigation pivot for all the farmland around it.
My husband and I agree that we have way too much "stuff" filling our house. It's my fault - I can't get rid of anything!! I have lots of furniture that used to be my grandparents and great-grandparents. How could I give them away? Then there's the concern over where we will put a baby crib when the time comes. If I had a baby now, the crib would only fit in the dining or living room!

anyway, we love our old farmhouse and i have a never-ending honey-do list for DH to make little improvements on it here and there!

Memmey - you will be in my prayers. My mom and aunts went through the same situation with my grandmother 2 years ago.

Hey Memmey,

Your house painting was not "drama" per se ... it was this fabulous saga ... for those of you meeting a lot of us, it isn't really fair to discuss this precious red house of Memmey's without giving you a little insight. Last year, we were all on a "red" kick. A lot of us have some red features in our home. Wasn't there some famous Parisian decorator claiming every room needs a little red? Well, now that my new house has bright red countertops, then I'm right there with all of you.

Anyway, Memmey's house-painting was like tuning into a daily soap opera. The pepto-pink-primer-patina was everyone's favorite ... we were delighted ... Memmey just about had a heart attack. Then, in the end, it was (and is) just gorgeous. We all held our breath all around the country waiting for Memmey to breathe a sigh of relief. By the way Memmey, didn't we say we were all coming to your house in like February when we are all freezing to get a little taste of cajun country?

Also, I have no idea how you are posting pictures directly into your posts yet. Just as an update; we closed on our house on Monday. The hardwoods were refinished with a special technique yesterday that was "sandless" but completely replaced the broken boards. Some of the rooms look brand new. It is overwhelming. We are moving in less than ten days and I'm still teaching ... Yikes.

Anyway, Memmey, I'm so very sorry about your Dad. Is there any "stuff" that the gals around here would like? If you have any pieces that are of a shippable size that you want to find good homes, you should possibly put up your own little garage sale thread here. I would certainly come to your Dad's estate sale if needed.

You are brave and dear Memmey. The story of your home inspires and overwhelms me every time I hear it. However, for the first time recently, I heard the story of your house before this house ... the one where the pear trees are growing above it now ... I realized it isn't the house that inspires me ... it is you, Memmey. We believe in you. I know this is awful. A lot of us have been through similar stuff. Send me a PM if you need anything at all.

Cheers to Memmey and her Red House from Mrs. Ruby-Jenny-Slippers and her new bright red countertops.

Look I'm gonna tell on myself.:o I noticed a picture of my Mama and my grandmother was missing off the mirror in my bedroom. I looked everywhere! It drove me crazy. I looked under the bed, pulled the dresser away from the wall...everywhere. I had dreamed about Mama and so I was thinking it was all connected( all mystic). I could not find it, told all my customers, went on and on about it. Well, thursday night I was putting my little bird to bed and there on my night stand in a little frame was the picture!!!! Oh no when did I put it in the frame?? Uh oh I felt so silly. There was Mama and I could hear her saying LOL straighten up and pay attention...LOL ugh........

As you can see from my signature, I live in Connecticut, the tax you to death state. LOL! It is beautiful where I live in the NW Corner.

We have an L~Shaped Ranch, I guess you could call it that. It was fugly when we purchased it almost 20~yrs ago. We worked on the inside first, and now are working on the exterior. It was brown board and batton. Blech! I was playing around on the paint computer at Home Depot several years ago, and for fun, chose an orange color for the exterior. I chose other colors that would match this orange. I put it on the house I chose, saved it, and printed it out. The paper print out sat in a scrapbook a couple of years.

Last year, we decided to paint the house. But what color do we use? I am sick of browns, blues, greens, yellow and white. Most of our neighborhood is boring. LOL! Sooooo.... to my shegrin, we picked the orange color that I played around with at Home Depot. People laughed at me at first, but when it was almost all done, we had neighbors telling me how much they loved the color, and what was the name of it? I had one lady tell me that I had inspired her to paint her kitchen purple. LOL! I never thought of me as inpsiring anyone.

The exterior is called Mesa Sunrise. It is in the orange family. Our trim was done in Starshine, which is in the white family. We painted the shutters, and some of the decorative panels Garland, which is in the green family. Also in the front we added a white octagon gable vent. Much nicer than the louvered rectangle one that was there before. You have to see it, and not invision it, or you will think I live in a pumpkin. LOL!

We have decorative panels under our two large windows in the front of the house. In the middle of the windows, I put a window box that has a picket fence behind it, with our house number. Very cottagey. We added 3~large teracotta planters towards our entrance, filled with flowers.
And window boxes near the garage. We have to still put down the dark gray~black slate tiles for the front steps.

Hubby made a stone walk way to the backyard. I have climbing roses on an arbor that goes over the stone steps, and walls. I love it! The entry door and the garage took the longest to paint. They each had recessed panels, and a transom window on the door. The door alone took me 80~hrs to paint free hand the 3~colors.

Now my house doesn`t look lost, it stands out. I love having people walk by and give me compliments when I am weeding the flower beds.

The house is 1,200 sq ft of living space. 3~bedrooms. 2~full baths. Kitchen. Large living room with a fireplace. Which I just love. Foyer. Hall way. We have an attached garage. When you go down stairs, we made another bedroom, and have a laundry room. We haven`t finished the rest of our walk~out basement yet. But we are getting there.
We have high decorative ceilings in all the rooms.
We have the additional 1,200 sq ft downstairs.

So, once the little fugly house that nobody noticed, is shining brightly for all to see.

Have a good day everyone!

Hugs,
Linda :)

Hi everyone! Count me in as a former CL fan who is just now coming out of my state of depression. Lol. Funny how a magazine can become such a close friend. I never did frequent the boards over at CL but wish I would have and hope to become an active member and participant over here at C&B. I am the mom of a one year old precious little girl who will be two in the spring and we are expecting our second child in June. Anyone want to come decorate a nursery? :)

I live in New Mexico in a very traditional brick ranch. Not quite what one thinks of when they hear NM! I absolutely love the cottage look and have been trying with all my might to make my home have all of the charm and charater of a cottage while not going overboard.

I really look forward to getting to know all of you!

Like Linda, I am also from CT. I have what I call a Cape Cod Farmhouse. Pictures are in my album. I put a new roof on since they were taken. I was a Cottage Living subscriber and visited the CL board once in a while. I was sad to get that little postcard that CL was no more. Nice to see the folks on the board over here. Happy New Year. Hi Everyone, :)

Thank you for the compliment on my house Tulip. I appreciate it. Once I get a scanner, I can post some pics. I will wait until spring when all of the flowers start to bloom, and I fill the window boxes. A neighbor down the road from us used a darker Mesa color on their front door. This color may catch on. :) If you research victorian houses, they all had lots of color. Now~a~days, people stay on the safe side, and stick to neutrals. Then they go out and spend lots of money on flowering trees and shrubs, flowers, and yard ornaments, to bring color to their yards.

Mom2two, congratulations on expecting. I would love to get away from all of this snow and help you decorate the nursery. When should I start packing? Anyone else want to help me? LOL!

Marilyn, you are only about 45~minutes to an hour away from me! I am located in Winsted. If I go thru Farmington, I can be in Southington in a blink of an eye. We go to your town often. I like the A.C. Moore craft store, and love eating at Denny`s.
I am a simple woman with simple needs. :)

I am so happy to meet all of the new members here.
Have a good evening everyone.

What a way to start off the New Year. I too am so happy everyone is coming here, new and old. I love making friends. I also love to talk as many of you will see. If talking were an Olympic Event. I would be bringing home the gold. LOL! Now, if I can figure out how to make a living with all of the talking I do. :)

My husband and I live in a 3 bedroom one bath home, built in 1949, just over 1,000 square feet with a detached garage and LOADS of curb appeal. There's no discernible dining room and kitchen is pretty small.

I always thought of it as a cottage; last night while reading C&B, he mentioned he thought it's more of a bungalow ... hmmm. How does one determine the difference? (It's definitely NOT a craftsman)

Any ideas?

chyna
01-05-2009, 10:18 AM
My definition a bungalow would really sit low or squat and has deeper overhangs for the roofline. Cottage would be more upright. Really the two can intermingle so there is no real black and white answer to it.

I just think bungalow is more one with the earth and a cottage is more one with the sky. That is just not making sense. My inner eye is seeing dirt/trees/grass on bungalows and for cottages I'm seeing flowers, blue skies, butterflies and sunshine.:o

If you really have a question on which you have you can ask C&B or visit the American Bungalow forum. There are some masterminds of the bungalow world over there. I haven't visited them for awhile what with discovering CL and the visiting aspect of that. I should go back and visit here some day. I do miss my buds over there.

Hi Everyone:

Well I joined the forum couple of weeks ago before I found out about Cottage Living shutting down. I was pretty stunned because, well, it was such a nice magazine and I liked how most of the homes that were featured were small (like mine) instead of a McMansion. I actually joined the this forum because I heard the CL site was shutting down and thought well this looks like a nice place to comtinue to meet like-minded cottage people.

So I guess I'm out of my "depression.":)

I've been enjoing the posts and noticed that Tulip is from a Chicago suburb (me too!). And a couple of posters are from CT (I grew up in Redding - VERY small town).

I mentioned my blog when I first posted and I've since added some holiday decorating I did to the house. I'll continue to add postings on what we've been doing to the inside of the house, but I've determined that blogging is downright exhausting! :D The link is http://www.jillandlarry.blogspot.com

Have a great night!

Good Morning Jill, :)

No, I don`t subscribe, but I do pick it up at the book store. I like going there, sitting down with a cup of coffee, and thumb thru it. That is usually my ``Me Time.`` Although, 9 out of 10 times the kids, hubby and grand daughter are with me. Once a month we go out to lunch, then venture on to the book store. The kids and grand daughter love it. It is our family time. Hubby gets to pay. :D

Hi everyone!

My name is Anne (the "andKita" refers to my cat Kita, who is practically my surrogate child at this point) and I'm new to the forum. :) I've been reading CL forums for a while, and was happy to find out where you all went!

My boyfriend and I are just purchasing a bungalow/cottage (no idea which it is) and our closing date is the first week of February. I'm so excited!

It's ~1000 s.f. and it's in Santa Cruz, CA. For all you NW people, I used to live in Redmond and Kirkland until I moved back to Cali to be closer to my family. I really do miss it!

You all have such amazing houses! I can't wait until our little fixer-upper looks as good as your places. :)

For those of you who don't know me from CL - Milwaukee, WI is home currently. Nearly 5 years here and I wonder every winter why any sane person would live here in winter. Though summers are okay (we do get a lot of humidity) and the falls are fabulous.
Ideally I would love to live in the Seattle area (2 adult kids there with families) but it is so far away from many family members. Actually in a perfect world, we'd be in New York city but can't afford Manhattan!!

I live in a townhouse condo in Everett, WA, which is about half an hour north of Seattle. It's supposed to be a Cape Cod style, I think. It's fairly dull on the exterior, but since it's a condo, I can't change that, so I've gone crazy on the inside. I've got a tiny little fenced courtyard in the back that gets very little sun, so I grow hostas and bleeding hearts in pots back there, and I've got a small area in the front where I can garden. I just had all the shrubs pulled out this summer and am going to do container gardening this year. Wish me luck; I have terrible luck with most plants. There's a hydrangea in front of the house that was covered with blooms when I moved in but has gotten exactly 1 flower per year since then. Our gardeners are supposed to maintain the plants in front of our homes, so I can't figure out what they are or aren't doing that is making this plant so pathetic. This may be the year that hydrangea goes bye-bye. I've planted bulbs this year, and I see they're already coming up, so I'm anxious to see what they look like.

Nice to see the other Pacific Northwest folks here. Can you believe all this snow we've been getting?!

Lisa S
01-26-2009, 08:26 AM
(Maria ~ I think the ideal place for you is Seattle too! We could visit each other.)

We just got a sprinkling of snow here this weekend, but even that is unusual. Have you had much in Everett this weekend? I'm heading up to Seattle area on Friday to visit friends. We're staying in their cabin a little ways out of the city and to the best of my knowledge there isn't any heat!!!

Hydrangeas bloom from the old growth part of the plant. It could be that the gardeners are cutting them incorrectly and inhibiting new growth. See if you can stop them from cutting this year and just see what you get. I just trim off the dead flowers and leave the rest alone. They're an expensive and s-l-o-w growing plant. I'd hate to see it ripped out.

shabbychick
01-26-2009, 06:06 PM
Thanks for the advice on the hydrangea! I'll put an "owner will maintain" sign in my garden and hope the gardeners bypass my plant with their shears. I used to live in a house with two great big hydrangeas, and we never did anything but deadhead them. They bloomed vigorously every year and seemed to thrive on our benign neglect.

We got about half an inch of snow in Everett yesterday, just enough to make the roads and sidewalks slick this morning. It's supposed to snow tomorrow morning then turn to rain. We'll see. The bulbs I planted are starting to come up, so I hope nothing drastic happens to kill them!

Ooh, I wouldn't want to be anywhere without heat in January. I hope they at least have a fireplace where you're going this weekend. Good luck with that!

I planted two hydrangeas right after we moved in three years ago. A friend of mine came to visit not long after and was helping us work outside. Having never had any experience with hydrangeas, she cut them back for me--all the way to the ground. Each year, they get a green leaf or two but that's about it. I don't hold out much hope that they can be saved. :(

We do have a lot of PNW folks here, don't we? I lived there when I was a child--my dad was stationed there--but it was so long ago that I don't remember much about it. Would love to visit there again sometime.

I live in nw Ohio. 1968 brick ranch, not very cottagy. I have been trying to decorate my home coastal cottage.....but not doing so good. We have a lot of oak pieces, both antique and new "old" that were made by my stepfather. I simply have too much stuff and too attached to some of it to get rid of it. Mostly it is getting my colors right that is the biggest problem.

Hi, I'm new as of yesterday and just finished reading through these 13 pages! I'm amazed and thrilled to have stumbled onto the home of the CL orphans! I was so sad to see the mag shut down, but I have renewed hope as I discover so many kindred spirits here. My home is a colonial of sorts in NE Kansas. Two-story, 3-bed, 2-bath, built in 1938. Long story short: When we moved in almost 7 years ago, we were infertile and expected to never have children. With two incomes and no kids, we thought we had the time and $ to make this house what we wanted it to be. 2 years after moving in, we decided to adopt. We now have two preschoolers, only one income (I stay home), and no money or time to work on the house! We also live in a college area of a college town and are tired of everything that goes with that:rolleyes:

My dream? Move several blocks south of here into an already renovated old house (preferably craftsman) and live the rest of our lives there.

My Gingerbread house is up for sale again and I did some stalking last night with dh and dd. While talking to the receptionist here at work I decided to check it out on line and I'm crushed! It is even more wonderful than I thought!!! I would say it is a Storybook cottage or even Gothic Revival and has most of the original lighting and hardwood floors thru the entire first floor and to make it that much worse for me. The basement has been finished and it light and airy! The "garage" or shed in the backyard? It is a greenhouse with an exercise room attached. I'm trying to convince myself that it isn't that wonderful because there is only one bathroom and the bedrooms have t be small. Not having a good time of convincing myself of such. :(

Briar Rose cottage has alot to happen to it to get up to that house's beauty. It will happen, it will happen but damn!!!!

We live in MI about 1/2 hour out of Detroit in a small town surrounded by suburbs. We picked this city because it has an actual vintage downtown and neighborhoods full of old houses. Our 1903 house is technically a bungalow 1 1/2 stories but it looks like an old farmhouse. It is only 1250 sq. ft. Which is small for 5 adults. Our three sons are 22, 20 and 18 so they will be moving out in a few years. This house was built for workers in the rose industry that flourished in the early 1900's. Across the street is an old abandoned house with a huge field of about 15 acres. Very unusual for this area. It used to be where the rose greenhouses were. They have it up for sale to build condos but with the market here I don't expect that to happen any time soon!

I used to love reading Cottage Living. I felt like I was losing a good friend when they stopped publishing then I spotted C&B. I LOVE the magazine and hope they have a long run. I will try and post some pictures when DH can show me how to do it.

We would love to see pictures of your home.

Something you said made me curious... in some places, the basement is counted in square footage. Our house is 2800 square feet, but a third of that is basement. What is it like in your areas?

chyna
03-09-2009, 09:08 AM
Basements don't count in my area unless they are finished. Interesting how that matters depending on the area of the country.

Josephine
03-09-2009, 10:28 AM
Basements don't count in sq. footage around here. Ours can't be finished as we live close to a river and when the water table gets to high we have a small amount of seepage through the floor. Eventually we want to put in a sump pump but I still wouldn't finish the basement. When they built this house in 1903 they solved the flooding problem by building the basement 1/2 above ground so the house sits up about 5 ft. above ground level.

chyna
03-10-2009, 09:29 AM
That's the problem in my neighborhood too, way too high water table. My basement has been flooded more than once. The people next door have a finished basement but like you mentioned they have it above ground and it used to be the main house until the house was built on top of it. I'd love ot see pics of that!
