Hi I am new here. I live in a 1929 Four Square in a historic district in North Carolina. We have lived in this house for almost 2 years. We lived next door in a 1926 French Eclectic but it was too small for a family of 6 so when this one went up we snatched it. Nice easy move.
I am a stay at home mom of 4 children - a 17 yr old high school senior son going to college in the fall, a 14 yr old son soon to be high school freshman, a 6 yr old son soon to be 1st grader and a 4 yr old daughter soon to be pre-k.
They keep me busy all the time. I am married to an Air Force officer who is very good at home projects- either he knows it or researches it and learns.
We have done many bath remodels and such..but as most know our list of to- do's keeps growing even though we get items done.
They say you are never done renovating an old house and they are right.
I hope to follow in your journeys and join in along the way.

Thank you all for the nice welcome.
Had a bad day yesterday. My neighbors huge 97 ring Oak Tree crashed into our yard..really it crashed into our kids play fort and the back of our garage. It was a terrible mess. We cut all the small limbs but had to have a tree company come and cut up the rest and remove it. Our little chainsaw was no match for that huge tree. The tree is gone and all the broken parts of the fort are gone - we rigged the fort to work for now until we get a new one. I guess it could have been worse- it could have been a different tree and hit our house - but thankfully that didn't happen.
The other bad part is since it was a live tree- our insurance has to deal with it. That just doesn't seem fair. I think if anything from someone else's property causes damage on yours they should be liable..at least he could have volunteered to pay the deductible for us but he didn't.
Oh well we move on.
We are also in a fast paced midst of getting my sisters 1898 cottage ready to go up for sale by the end of April...what a lot of work. I got to paint the living room walls today and tried to start the trim but the last owner used oil paint...dang him.So, I am going to hire someone to come in and paint all the trim...it will take me too long to prime then paint all the trim and windows....I only have about 3-4 hours a day to do it as I have the kids...
fun time in NC..

I'm a firm believer in the "it could have been worse" way of thinking. Thank GOD that your kids were not playing in their play fort! I know the whole situation is a real pain - anytime insurance is involved, that's how it is. But keep on thinking how lucky you were (in the big picture).
As for oil paint...yuck! It sure will take a long time to prime and paint all of that. There just isn't enough time... Good luck on all the things you're dealing with!
OMGoooooooodness that is horrible! I am soooo glad your family was not harmed. Why does it always seems that the unexpected happens when we least expect it.
Hope everything turns out as well as it can. Taker care.

Chapter Two and GiGi -
thanks for the well wishes. Yes you are right it could have been much worse.
I also was thankful it happened at night and not when I had the neighborhood of 7 kids playing on it. The tree that fell broke right off at the roots at the ball of the tree- the roots rotted. I had never heard of that.
But it is all okay now. The kids were on the makeshift fort today and were not miffed at all.
I honestly wish it had taken out the garage then we could have made my back potting room bigger when we fixed it :) but oh well. Maybe next time it isn't the only huge tree he has :)
And yes oil paint - oh what a pain. I mean I like it when it is on as it is rock hard and good for kids to not dent it but it is a beast to get it that way.
have a nice evening ladies...

Welcome Tammy,
Sorry to hear about the tree. Hope everything goes well with cleanup and your sister's place. Kids are great they always move on and improvise in any situation. Les B

You just lived my ultimate nightmare with trees. My neighbor has two huge evergreens that don't seem to be in the best health and also seem to lean towards my house. I can only hope that when they go they go in the direction of the wind and land square in her front yard. At least that is what I'm hoping for.
Welcome to the site and hope to see you around loads.

Thank goodness it didn't land on that adorable house of yours!!! Get the lumber from the tree that fell to build a bigger, better tree house!!
