While out working in the garden trying to figure out what is what from last year I got to thinking. If you knew me you'd know that can be dangerous..haha
Anyway, I thought as we all work on our gardens this year we could take pictures of flowers that bloom and then when fall comes we could collect the seeds. We could then post the pictures and then we could all share - swap seeds to help the gardens out next year.
Does that make sense?
Just a thought as i have tons of purple coneflower seed heads.

What about our different zones?
Sounds like a good idea though!

Well we could when we post our pics of the plants also list at the top where we live so zones will line up. I just got back from the nursery and spent a whopping $140 so plants get expensive so any way we can share and save sounds good.
I've got a bunch of Moonflower seeds that I harvested from my vines last fall. I can only handle maybe two more vines, what with all of the others I have..I'm running out of space on my fence
I'm more than happy to do a swap! I also have Coral Vine seeds, although last year was the first year I harvested those, so no guarantee they'll come up... :o
I attached some pictures of my Coral Vine on the arbor over the garage door. I have them growing with my New Dawn Roses and they tend to take over when the roses slow down blooming. They are a bright pink and bloom from summer through fall.
Ms. Suz~~~~ What beau-ti-ful vines!!!!!
Thanks Gigi! :D
I remember when Todd first built the arbor, I kept thinking what in the world am I going to grow there??? It worked out. My Coral Vines are just beginning to pop out of the ground. They grow quickly and in a month or two it will be covering the arbor. :)
Oh I forgot to put the zone I'm in...The Twilight Zone. lol just kidding. Zone 8b.

That coral vine is beautiful! I want an arbor over my garage too ~ someday!
Breezy~ I hear ya! Welcome to my world! ;)
Cheap Diva~ I don't mind sending you some..they grow rather quickly...just let me know!
Lisa~ I think my husband is regretting building it for me--He built me another for the back of the house and I'm thinking of a third over the kitchen window! Our house will be covered from head to toe lol

Love the coral vine and I love the arbor over the garage. Let me ask- how do you get the vine to go up there and hook on? Do you let it grow then place it there yourself?
Yarborough,
When the vine first comes up it is pretty rigid. Mine is just coming up and is about 10 inches tall and I have a small wooden stick that I pounded in to the ground kind of like a dowel rod. I have a wire tied from the end of the stick to the light fixture. When it reaches the light fixture on the side of the garage door, I have a wire going from the light fixture to the arbor itself so it can climb that. Then as it grows horizontally along the arbor, I'll tie it to the arbor loosely so that it doesn't slip off when it's a really windy day or we have a tropical storm. :)

Suz,
Do you think you could send me some of your coral vine seeds? I think they are lovely and would work wonders on my and my sisters arbor?
Love your website and just entered to try to win your cool scarf.
Hi Tammy!
I saw you entered the giveaway :) I will certainly send you some Coral Vine seeds. I actually have some soaking right now in the kitchen and they are beginning to germinate. I would do that before planting them otherwise it might take a month or so to see any growth coming up from the ground. they do grow fast once they get going-- and I mean FAST. In the winter you can cut them back after the freeze and then in April (in my zone 8b) they will come up again !
PM me your address and I'll send them out tomorrow :) Oh I have TONS of Moonflower seeds if you want some as well..they are the ones I harvested last year and mine are coming up already!

Hi Suz, I looked all over this town for Coral Vine and can't find any!!! Is there any seeds I can send you for a swap?
Hi Heather~
Well, what kind of seeds do you want to swap? I like just about any flower shade or sun - it doesn't matter. I have plenty of Coral Vine seeds, Coral Nymph Salvia, 5 or 6 clematis seeds, Moonflower seeds, Morning glory seeds and I think I have some Leopard Lily seeds to swap.
let me know :)

Oh just the coral vines would be fantastic!
What about you? Can I send you something you can't get where you are? I'm in zone 8b too and the stores are just packed with seeds (but not coral vines...).
Do you have or want Hollyhocks? There are lot's of varieties floating around here. In my garden I have lot's of wild mint (Melissa) and Sweet Woodruf too. I also have a massive herb garden with all sorts of plants. You let me know!
Heather,
Holly hocks or the mints would be fabulous! I have never grown Holly hocks but always wanted to and I used to have a bunch of different mints until my dog got into the garden and peed on them  I was wondering why he smelled so good everytime he went out...lesson learned.
I am excited!

OK I'll see what kind of Hollyhocks I can find for you today!
I can't give you any of my seeds as they are only 1 foot tall so far - I grew them from seed last winter and transplanted them outside last summer BUT then we renovated the kitchen and they are RIGHT outside the new exterior wall and there was debris inches away from them and the contractor knew to keep clear of them (they were so tiny!) and did so! That's my story of my amazing little Hollyhocks. They are the Peaches n' Dreams kind and I have an extra unopened packet sitting right in front of me if you want those!
Heather-
That sounds wonderful--I'll take them! :) Thanks! I look forward to growing them and I'll have to post pics when they get tall and fabulous ;)

Ok Suz, the packet of Peaches n' Dreams I have says "sell by 10/08" so I'm unsure... I'll send them anyways with a packet I bought today of Hollyhocks - Chaters Double Mixed, if that's all good with you! I'll go PM you.

Suz -
A question. I somehow planted one foxglove last year and it is amazing this year. I don't remember planting it so don't know if it was a plant or what.
Do they give seeds? Or is it a bulb or what? I was wondering so I can collect stuff to plant more. Any info?
Here is a pic of it.

Also, in the pic is a teacup birdfeeder..a bit different than the one I sent Gigi for swap. I am giving this away on the cottage charm giveaway so if you all want a chance at it - go to my blog and leave a comment under it for the drawing on May 30th.

yarb - foxgloves (digitalis) are biennials, every other year, like hollyhocks. If you plant enough of them, they'll reseed and you'll have them popping up every year. I used to have hollyhocks and foxgloves all over my front yard and LOVED them. Then my daughter and s-i-l bought the house and he pulled them all out.

cheapdiva-
thanks so do the foxgloves and hollyhocks reseed themselves? I just leave them alone and they'll do their thing.? Foxgloves are expensive to buy jeesh
I know nothing of foxgloves and hollyhocks but they are so pretty :) They make for a very cottagey garden I think.
