Ladies, I thought I would share with you a few pics from my daughter Ashley's prom today. It was in the low 80's and very windy.

They did have a great time. I put a lot of $$ in the prom for her, but, it was something I never really got to do...the whole beautiful dress thing and flowers and hair and shoes, so I was very happy I could to it for her this year.
From what I understand, there were some girls that didn't go because families didn't have the money to send them. That makes me sad, because there was no reason our school/town/other parents couldn't of had a dress exchange or something for them. Our unemployment rate is really high, and I can truly understand a parent not having the money.
My prom dress was from Sears for $22, (1978) I am sure one of you ladies would love to make curtains out of it. lol. Yep, it was flowery and ugly by todays standards.....well, it was all I could afford then.

She looked beautiful and will always have those memories.
I agree there should be a prom dress exchange. My co-worker had two daughters who attended many a prom and had a closet full of beautiful expensive dresses.
My daughter and her friend did borrow dresses to cut back on expenses, especially if they were invited to other schools proms within the same year.
But I have to say the whole prom thing has been blown out of proportion at many schools.
I'm glad she had a good time and my dress was also a very simple cream eyelet halter that I wore again for my brothers wedding.

I had a $20 dress from JC Penney back in 1982. My boyfriend broke up with me on prom week, but "sweetly" said he'd still take me to the prom. I told him I'd have no problem finding a date on short notice.
My prom date was my best male friend (who incidently, was VERY good looking). We both wore baby blue ~ my dress and his tux:eek:. We had a nice time.
He was killed in an accident a few years later. I'm forever struck by how sad I was when my date dumped me and how grateful I am now that he did. I have memories of my best friend that will last forever. And pictures too!

Marie,
She looked beautiful. This weekend was my son's prom also. When I get pics back from the girl..I'll post some. It is amazing what prom entails now isn't it? These girls would cringe if they saw our dresses and the cost of them.
Ahh to be young and oblivious..such fun :)
Yes we want to see everyone's pics!
How was the big event for everyone?

I thought I would share a little of what it cost to send my daughter to prom:
Dress $350 (dress was $240 plus tax and alterations)
Hair updo $35
Necklace $18
Shoes $46
Prom tickets $20
Dinner $40 (her date ended up paying for dinner though)
Boutineer (sp?) $13
Gas to drive to dinner in our car $10
Ashley wrist coursage which her date paid for was probably $20
Gosh, how I could of paid for new countertop for my kitchen. lol
Really, I am so glad that both hubby and I are still working and that we could do it for her. She has told me thank you many times over for all of it, which makes it even more special, as I realize that she really did appreciate it all. My Ashley is a sweetheart.....well that is mom talking here.
Looking forward to seeing other pictures.
Yes, the prom has gotten way out of hand. No more dinners before the dance, the kids have to drive 1 hour away to the city.

Marie, I think it is really lovely for you to be able to do this for your daughter. As a teacher, I tend to pay close attention to the "price-tag" teenagers tally up for their families with yearbooks and school fees alone. (Not to mention the I-pods, cell phones, and designer jeans.) Ashley looks really beautiful. I hope she had fun! Sometimes, I wish times were a little simpler. However, I really respect parents who "get it" that it is sometimes worth the splurge to give their daughters a "princess" moment here and there. Again ... very pretty. Thanks for sharing.
