Does anyone in our group do felting? (I don't think that's grammatically correct!) I'm a novice, but I enjoy it.
I saw a darling snowman in a blog post. The caption said that it was made from quilt batting, but it looked felted. Has anyone used batting as a felting medium? Hmmm... I bet a synthetic batting wouldn't work. Can you buy a natural fiber batting. I'm obviously NOT a seamstress.

yes you can buy natural cotton batting. When I've done quilts I've intentionally got the cotton because I am some sort of cotton freak. :o;) I got mine at Jo-Ann's, it isn't a bright white but more of an antique white but guess that all depends on how you feel about it. :)

That sounds perfect. I'm going to give it a try!
Hey Lisa- The only felting I'm familar with is thru my soaping network.
Some soapers felt soap... I never have, but it sounds interesting.
I know with all these crafty ladies you will find the exact answer you are looking for.... ;)

Most the time when you hear felting in a sewing capacity it refers to taking wool and washing and drying it..then the wool is "felted". You know what they tell us not to do to wool sweaters. It makes it like felt but is softer because it is wool.
What are you going to make? I sew all the time. Love to do home decor and clothing for my daughter.

Gigi~I have to ask--how do you felt soap?
I'm familiar with the type of felting that Tammy is talking about, though I've never done it. BH&G had some really cute felted purses in an issue a couple of months back.

The only time I felt soap was when I washed my hands. :o (small joke...)
Hi Rosemary- This link has a great tutorial about felting soap:

I have not felted soap before, but know lots of people who have. Let me know if you do this!
Happy soaping.... :) and Chapter Two you are a quick wit! :D

You are my first chuckle this morning, ChapterTwo:p!
Thanks Gigi~now that I've looked at that link, I remember reading something about that on a soap forum. I just didn't realize what it was called!

And my curiosity was piqued, Gigi - I looked at that "felting soap" link...I am now enlightened! (And am thinking that would a fun, quick little gift for Christmas...) Thanks for posting the link.

I'm wondering if the snowman you saw was needle felted? I've 'felted' things using the washing machine and by needle felting. I've only needle felted by using wool roving but I don't know why batting wouldn't work - makes me want to try and see what happens when you start poking it with a needle. The felting process intrigues me!

Danske, that's a great idea! I've only needle felted with wool (doll's hair, sheep, etc) and I never thought of doing it with batting. It would make a perfect snowman:).

I love needle felting. I'm a novice, but am learning from my friend who is a very good artist. She makes the most beautiful needle felted tree top angels.
