OK I don't know what came over me but yesterday I painted our front door gloss RED. I like it but DH doesn't. I told him it's not done....

Today I'm power washing the steps and it will be painted grey - darker than the grey that's on there now. Yesterday I spruced up the front garden by planting new shrubs and some perennial wildflower seeds and bought some edging (grey) to contain the garden. The house will be repainted this summer - we're still debating on whether or not to keep it white or go grey with white trim.

Now back to the door... I would put a planter but the steps have no landing. I shouldn't put a window box 'cause then I'd have to do all the other windows. Oh and my pic is just a mock-up, it seemed easier than running outside in my jammies and REAL bad morning hair.

Anybody have any suggestions?

p.s. I changed my name from Airsides - it didn't "suit" this forum (another life, sigh....)

I think many of us (including me) get hung up on that "matchy matchy" thing. I think it would be a great idea to put a window box there, with no need to have them on other windows. I would also put a pot of some red/other color flowers just in front of the railing.

I'd also think about painting the roof of the mailbox (and/or the door) the same color as your front door.

I'd add some stair treads (you can get those pretty inexpensively) with a tweed or something with some red touches in it. And is the plant on the right something that flowers? I'd cut that back a wee bit if not, or if it does...after it blooms.

You are ambitious, and you've gotten a LOT done, Heather!

Oh I never thought of the mailbox, hhhhmmmmmm.
And the stair treads is a good idea too!
That plant is a rosemary and I just don't have the heart to pull it out and I don't think it would survive a transplant, but I do trim it back every year. Thanks Chapter Two.

Heather, I love red doors!

I chickened out and went black:rolleyes:, but with my color scheme I think it was best...so I'll just have to live thru you:p

I think the suggestions are great. I'll have to go back and look at your picture again but I think in the hanging basket plant some red geraniums you just can't go wrong with those. Maybe trim up the rosemary a bit, but keep it. My MIL always planted it by her door. Its an Italian thing--means money will come thru the door. Umm, maybe I should try planting some again.....

If you have the space on the stairs could you put a small pot on each step with some red flowers?
BRB I have to look at your photo again.:)

Oooooh, NOW ya tell me, about the rosemary! So THAT'S what I've been doing wrong all these years...:D
Rosemary plants = money. I LIKE that idea!

Definitely, keep the rosemary...
And I like Annielinz's ideas about the geraniums! They're such happy flowers...

Well, I gave hubby a cup of coffee and told him what "we" have to do. He's going to make a planter for beside the front door, under the long window, and I'll paint it red like the door! He even said he'd make it today (after power washing...) Plan is to put geraniums and an ivy so it will look good in the winter too.

Thanks gals for helping me!

I don't like pulling out thriving plants, and I also try to not do matchy-matchy. But I think two topiaries on both sides of your railings would look adorable!

Love the red! I think you should cut out the rosemary b/c it's blocking the walk too much. You could do one topiary to the right of the front door or do two larger plants (ferns or something high impact ) at the bottom of the stairs on either side. I like the idea of dressing up the mailbox...could you replace it with a copper or metal one? Also, what about vines growing up the railing?

We did two huge ferns in planters at the bottom of our front stairs b/c we didn't have room for anything on either side of the door up on the porch...

Oh Heather, the red planter box will look great! I can't wait to see the picture after you get it all done.

I'm not much into matchy-matchy either, so I like a wild mix of flowers and colors--indoors and out.

I don't want to burst anyones bubble, but I've had a couple of rosemary plants for years, and so far, the bucks are not rolling in:p.
