Okay well we moved things around a bit. Our house is laid out wierd. You walk right into a big narrow room - kinda a sitting room. We had it as that and basically it became a hallway- we never sat there. Then to the left is a small room that is our tv/den. We are in there always. Then there is a displace foyer it is called with the staircase and is pretty much a pretty area that is not functionable except to go upstairs :)
Then there is a huge dining room..I mean huge. We used that room about 4 times a month. So, with the two biggest rooms not being used we moved junk around a bit. I moved the sitting room furniture to the attic. I moved the dining room to the front room..now it is a hallway and we use it a bit.
And I took over the huge dining room as well the family craft room. The kids use it more than I do- they have time :)
Anyway I digress. Our family room is open to the now dining room and it is red with white beadboard wainscoating. The dining room is a golden color that also goes up the staircase and to the back of the house to the mud room. I don't mind the color but had it at my old house and it is worse for wear here so it needs to be repainted no matter what.
What I am wondering is what color would create a flow from the red den to the red dislocated foyer but tie in...

Here are some pics of the rooms:

The dining room table is a piece we got from the unfinished furniture store and well I tried staining it - that didn't work well so painted it brown. I was thinking to coordinate it with the other red areas I could paint the table red..thoughts? Notice the red from the other room and then notice the pic with all the color swatches on the wall? I tried various greens and some tans.
The problem with tans is the fireplace brick - it is a grey tanish color and it disappears next to tan paint..
HELP

You have a beautiful home! So much character.

Regarding colors, I know you tried tan but how about going in the carmel/peanut butter shades. I have that on my walls and its very easy to live with and I think it'll give you the contrast against the fireplace brick you want. However if you are looking for a complete change from the gold look then maybe something in the green family. Do you have some inspiration fabric that you use that you can pull colors from?

Can't wait to see what you decide on.

I actually love the gold color in your dining room. It is very similar to mine, and I also have the red in the adjoining living room (1 wall only). I am not much help on color, I am always struggling.....But I love your room, very nice!

Thank you-
funny you should ask about fabric. My best friend and I have a fave fabric we have used to decorate our houses for years. P Kaufmann's Queensland in Crimson .

I've used it with denim slipcovers and such. But am not a huge fan of blue. I've used the light green in it to paint the kitchen cabinets which I am over now.

I don't know - it has always gone with gold like here is the former dining room now craft room and you can see the drapes go well with the gold...arrrghhh hard to do this paint decision making.

What a house! Oh my gosh ~ it's just beautiful!

The color I used in my living room and dining room might be just right for you. It's called 'Peanut' from Sherwin Williams.

Darn... you can't really tell the color from these pictures. See if you can find in on their site. I think you'll love it.

I LOVE that fabric!

I know I've seen some blogs where they have used it. I'll try to check at lunch and see what colors they painted the walls.

How about an olive green?

Lisa that looks almost the same color on the walls- I can't find my paint swatch as it was about 3 years ago...

Those pics are wonderful of your house- that is a nice color I'll have to go in and see if they have a swatch of it for me to take.

thanks and post more pics of your house. I love them all.
Did you have your kitchen cabinets custom made?

Tammy what about painting the fireplace brick a cream colour like your trim? It would solve that problem.

It's funny Tammy ~ I had the color your currently changing on my walls a few years ago!

Yep, all the woodwork in the house was rebuilt by our carpenter. He built everything on site. It was a mess, but well worth the trouble. He currently builds in his new shop, but he'll ship anywhere and then come out to install. I can't rave enough about his work.

More pictures of your house too, sister! You've got a beauty!

I love your picnic table area. What is the table sitting on....pea gravel? Mulch?

Thank you. That picture was taken in the dead of winter ~ it actually looks much prettier now. The picnic table area is pea gravel.

I love that dining pergola area also...I love those things. My friend Liz has one and has cross vine growing on it...it has orange flowers on it early on then is green year round. She planted one vine at each corner and it covered it by the second year...very cool.

I planted Wisteria in each corner last year. It's going gang busters now, but still no blooms. Maybe later this summer...

We had to cut down some unhealthy trees on our property. I hated to see them go to waste, so I asked my husband to build the pergola. Let me tell you, those suckers were heavy to carry out of the forest. I did a lot of cringing when Dan bear hugged them into the cement holes. I've got one tough husband!

The chandelier was a bright gold 1990's thing that I bought at Goodwill for less than a buck. It really makes the "room"!
