In this old house, one thing strange (well, there are many!) is that the doors are all wacky. They don't shut properly in summer, when they swell, and some of them were cut at the bottom so there is more than a 1/2" gap. I'm sure if someone knew what she was doing (!), "she" could plane off some of the edge of the door. But, that's not gonna happen!

Hi Chapter Two!
If someone planed the bottom of the doors, they didn't know how to properly fix (most likely) a loose hinge.
Note to all: don't plane your doors to keep them from scraping! Fix the real culprit so you don't create another problem: drafts! ;-)

We have squeeky doors which drives me nuts. Hubs has to "lube" them all the time:D

Are you sure that they weren't cut off to go over carpet? It seems to be a pretty common thing to do and then messes up your doors forever. This Old House did an article/how to on how to fix the doors but it involves matching up woods and fusing them together. I'm for the ignore it or just cover up with a kick plate. :o

Your post makes me smile! I remember "back in the day" when we had bought our first house and had a door problem similar to the one you describe. Well, I took the door down, carted it outside, and cut it off a bit so it would not stick. I took it back in, hung it back up, and danged if it still didn't stick! So, once again, I repeated the process, and hacked even more off it, and took it back inside to try again. I hung it back on the hinges and stood back to realize the space at bottom was now so large that a small child or dog could probably get under it. I had cut off the wrong side!
Guess that's called learning!

LOL, Allen. That sounds like exactly the kind of thing I would do. When I was laying those vinyl flooring planks in my closet, I kept cutting off the wrong side no matter how many times I measured and marked. If I had my life to live over again, I'd sure try to develop some visual-spatial skills!

I made a mistake on a door before. I bought a new door and was drilling for the knob and somehow ended up making my whole about three inches down from where the hole was supposed to go. I ended up using wood putty and stain to cover up the part of the hole that was visible with the knob installed. I was really hating myself for such a stupid mistake and was glad that I was able to hide it fairly well.
