I'm so frustrated with my old and tired kitchen.
I decided last night to spruce it up for the warmer summer months. I took down the dark and heavy looking valance and panels. I shopped my house:o and found these battenburg valances I had stashed away. Still not happy because of the darkness of the painted table top I went shopping after work to look for a lighter colored table cloth. Well imagine my surprise and excitement when I spotted this white one with cutouts similar to the valances, and in round no less to fit my table! I was doing the happy dance. :D
I just had to share my score. I also bought a new sisal rug to put in front of the sink, sometimes the littlest things can change the look and feel of a room.
So heres a picture from before with the darker drapes and after lightened up.

annielinz...It's the truth - the smallest changes can make the biggest difference! Great job in finding the matching valance and tablecloth; your room looks so fresh and bright and summery!
I have a hutch something like yours (not as pretty - from the Seventies) and I'm itchin' to paint it, along with the table and chairs. Although I've been told that if I prime (which I would) it won't chip, I still have mixed feelings. And yes, I know...chipping will give it character!;)

How very nice the different "looks" in your room! That tablecloth is PERFECT.

LOVE IT. I am totally about redoing for different seasons..guess that is why I have so much junk and linens. It is amazing what just a few linen changes will do.
I think it looks amazing. Of course it looked amazing to begin with. And I think you have an awesome sense of style and taste. I love all your pictures...
so with that said - TAKE MORE AND SHOW US MORE :)
I am in the process of lightening up a lot of things around this house..the master bedroom is almost done, the bath is pretty much done- need some wall decor.
Yesterday was spent at the home depot getting paint samples to start the kitchen cabinets...I love white but my four kids plus sloppy hub don't do well with white. So, I have been picking up taupes, creams..etc...I would love black but too many on the block doing that..hate to be or do like everyone else :)
gonna hit a habitat store today - need some time to just look and wonder what the possibilities could be.

Thank you guys! I really like the cleaner/lighter feeling I get when I walk into the kitchen. I seem to be drawn more and more to the whites, creams, taupes and beige's these days.
DH of course, the first thing out of his mouth this morning, what's up with the white table cloth? I told him I wanted to brighten up the kitchen and if he spills coffee......he tends to be a little klutzy, I'll have to get him a tommy tippy cup:).
Tammy, I'm so glad others have lots of linens etc stashed away. This is why I have such a hard time getting rid of things because I love to change things up when the mood strikes. Can't wait to see what you decide on the color for your cabinets.
C2, when I painted the hutch I didn't prime it, I sanded it a bit but I think the wood was so thirsty the paint has held well.
Heather, I was just thrilled to find the tablecloth especially in round.

The tablecloth is perfect! Love the new summery look for the room.
Yarbroughhouse~you are so right about just a few little changes making a difference. I'm trying to brighten up my kitchen with some lighter colored things. I like it darker in winter, but I'm ready for lots of lighter colors and sunshine this time of year:).
ChapterTwo, I love chippy things. Have you decided what you're going to do?
Wonderful makeover! I truly love "less" on any window and it worked well in your case!
I love the change...what fun!

When I sit down and think about it, I really won't have time to paint the furniture (as I have all the rooms to paint!) and my daughter's wedding this summer , so I guess the decision about the furniture will be made after October. By that point, I'll probably be all "painted out", and will just want to get through the holidays! :o
You were mentioning changing things for the seasons...that's what our mothers used to do years ago - change the curtains, pull up the rugs for summer, make little changes that altered the mood of the rooms for the season.

The before is beautiful, but I also love the lighter look for summer.
