View Full Version : How is your weather?

Remember me telling you how crazy our weather is here?
Today and tomorrow we have chances of snow flurries and then the first of next week we are forcasted to have 74 degree days?????
I am trying to live at about 68 degrees in my little old cottage. It is on piers and the floor is cold COLD. Without alot of funds....correction, without ANY funds I am at a loss to change that.I guess I will put the tin around the bottom to block the wind next week. I hate the look but utility over vanity in the winter.
I have been collecting flat white sheets. I fold them over a tension rod and put them in the windows. I looks nice from the outside and it blocks the draft from the old windows. I still have the original windows, they are huge.
It is not that I am dying here from the cold but my utility bills can go through the roof literaly in the months of Dec. through Feb. That is as long as our winter lasts.
How do you all keep warm in the northern states. Old cottages are bottomless pits when it comes to insulating them. I read about a barrier for the roof rafters that you staple on and it keeps the heat out . I wonder if that helps with the cold???

Today will be a balmy 33°, with plenty of snow to shovel. Tonight will be in the teens. To keep warm, we dress in layers. Merino wool socks, down coats, etc. And we stop shoveling for a hot cocoa break. :D

Think layers for your home, too, Mem. Your sheet idea is a start. Quilts might work too. My sister installed plastic window kits every year and said that they helped a lot. Here's a website (http://www.eartheasy.com/live_cheapheat.htm)that may be helpful.

Stay warm!

This was supposed to be my very first "Mom's Weekend". I had plans to go to Hood River with my girl friends to celebrate our December birthdays. The mountain passes are predicted to receive two feet of snow, so I guess that plan is foiled.

Here on the valley floor, we're supposed to get snow too. I really hope so ~ any change from rain is always welcome.

Our weather is typically in the upper 30's but very damp. In fact, Lewis and Clark and their party said that they would rather be in Illinois than in Oregon in the winter. I can tell you this cold damp is not fun on arthritic fingers, toes and hips.

I wear a lot of layers too. A t-shirt, a sweater and a down filled vest. I love Eddie Bauer's wool socks. They're about $9 a piece, but they've lasted for years and they keep me toasty. And they're really cute.

If I ever get real cold, I can go outside a rake wet leaves. Then I'm peeling the layers OFF!

Memmy ~ have you tried an inexpensive portable heater? We have one that's shaped like a radiator. I like it better than the boxy ones, cause it doesn't seem as apt to fall over. It puts out a lot of heat. Another suggestion: flannel sheets. They're on sale at Target right now for $13. I bought some this week and my bed is so cozy. I have to make sure not to wear my flannel jammies at the same time the sheets are on the bed, or I'll get stuck! Just kiddin'!

My basement/crawlspace is pretty insulated but the floors can get chilly at times so in the winter months I put down as many area rugs as I can get away with then roll them up in the summer months. that alone seems to help alot. But then installing weatherstripping on my doors would help ALOT! :o Between a front door that they messed up the threshold on, a back door that they destroyed the frame on (previous owner and her demon seeds) and a front door on the porch that has a large gap at the bottom for floor clearance you can imagine the breezes coming in thru the doors. :o

Hi memmey! You're getting the same weather today as we had yesterday! It snowed just a little here - not enough to accumulate. It was COLD yesterday and this morning it was 17 when we left the house! BRRR! It's supposed to be highs in the 40s today and 50s tomorrow.
I have been wearing either fleece-lined boots or wool socks! Our house is old too and has the original windows. Someone at one time did put up storm windows but it hasn't seemed to help with keeping the house warm! I completely understand trying to stay at 68 degrees. One of our heating bills last year reached over $150.
I did the same thing with the sheets on the windows! We have an electric blanket that we curl up under to watch TV in the living room and our bed has an extra quilt on top now. I've been wanting a portable heater for our bathroom because someone took the air vent out of it. DH says no. Sigh.

anyway, yall stay warm!! drink lots of hot cocoa! wear fleece houseshoes or socks!

We have gone from freezing temps to balmy weather and severe storms and flooding.

I had to pull into the grocery store parking lot this morning after I dropped the little one off at school because it was raining so hard I couldn't see the road. Hadn't been sitting there ten minutes when the tornado sirens started sounding. There were several of us who scrambled out of our cars and ran into the grocery store where the manager graciously offered us a safe shelter--along with all of his employees--in the walk in freezer! :D

It was pretty scary!

It is cold here today, too. Right now, it is 26 on our porch thermometer. I think we are supposed to get a warm up to the upper 60s in a few days. I get tired of it going back and forth, but it's always so hard to complain when it's 65 and sunny outside!

I wear thermal underwear a lot during the winter and drink lots of hot liquids. I keep rugs down on each side of the bed, but the cat is too fond of scratching the big one I used to have in the living rooms, so we just wear very warm socks if we want to go around without shoes on.

The weather is just so crazy in the south. One day you're having tornadoes and the next day the roads are covered in ice:eek: You be careful, Lynzee! (Once we spend a tornado warning in the back kitchen area of a hamburger place).

Lynz ~ I can relate to your experience this morning. Years ago when my two oldest daughters were little we were at Safeway when a storm came up and all of the shoppers were herded into the back freezer for safety. We weren't in there too long but I'm so glad we were cause the front window was knocked out with glass all over. Needless to say I grabbed my girls and went home without finishing my shopping.

It was cold here this morning with some ice on the ground. Our weather is crazy too and unseasonably cold for this time of year. The sun finally came out and it's lovely now.

Gonna wear thick socks and sweaters or sweats to keep warm - seems like if I can keep my feet warm the rest of me is too.:p

Lisa S
12-10-2008, 02:24 PM
Wow, Lynzee! What a scary experience. Breezy, you too. I was a kid when we lived in tornado country and it all seemed exciting. I'm sure as an adult, I'd have a different perspective.

It was dry and in the 30s here but now we have rain and it's 61...So strange. I wore a turtleneck under my dress today and had to take it off b/c I got hot. When it is cold out, I wear my snazzy new ice breakers merino wool underwear and a windproof fleece. Our house is new, so it's very well insulated. We keep it around 64 in our house and just wear layers.

Your not gonna believe this!!!! It is snowing here !!!! We NEVER get snow.
Chev( beagle/bassett) did a double take this morning at the backdoor....lol
What a treat. It will be gone by lunch I am sure.
So Merry Christmas Acadiana we have snow.

Don't laugh all of you who live in snow everyday during the winter. Remember where I am.:p:p

Oh, Memmey! I am so jealous! Please send it due East!!!

We've had no more severe weather but we've had over 12 inches of rain in the last 24 hours, so flooding is now our biggest concern. Temps are falling rapidly this am, so I'm really hoping we'll get some of Memmey's snow! :D

I can't believe you had snow mem!

Like Lisa, I had out of town plans that we cancelled due to the forcast of extremely bad weather. It has turned out to be only ho-hum bad (no tornado warnings :)) Cold....and a few snowflakes. I have spent the weekend making jewelery for christmas gifts.

My back up plans turned out great. My three friends and I stayed for free at the Marriott in downtown Portland using my husband's reward points. We had dinner at a great Asian restaurant and then walked 15 blocks in the cold to listen to some awesome jazz. The band was called Intervision and I bet they become the next big thing out of Portland. Check out their website at http://www.intervisionmusic.com

The next day we went to a great place for breakfast called Mothers. I putting the website info here 'cause the decor is something you all would like. http://www.mothersbistro.com/about.html

Then we went shopping ALL DAY without kid interruptions for potty breaks or snacks! It was a blast.

We ended by going to a Portland iconic restaurant ('cause it's all about the food, right?) called Jake's and had some of the best spiced wine I've every had.

We all need to spend time with our friends. Personally, I need to do it a lot more often. I feel refreshed and relaxed.

Temperature in the low thirties here and we're covered in snow! The kids (middle schoolers) and their mama (me, the middle school teacher) have spent the day saying things like "Wouldn't it be great if school was out tomorrow?" Their dad (the high school principal) keeps responding with, "NO! It would NOT be great!" because he has to go to work no matter what! Party pooper!

We leave in three days for Southern California for a week. A weather site I visit says we are to have snow here at home on the 25th, which will be a treat!

So right now, we're packing, looking out the windows, making quiet wishes for more snow (or at least temps low enough that the bus can't run!) and drinking cocoa. Not a bad Sunday!

Just got the news ~ no school for us tomorrow!!!

Whidbey5
12-14-2008, 05:18 PM
Wow! That's an early call! I wish we'd get them the night before. I always feel kind of bad for the guy in charge of transportation. They'll be out at 2am driving the district's roads, trying to figure out if getting the kids to school will be safe. It would, however, be really nice to go to bed knowing our status. If not, no sleeping in for the grown ups here!

Come on snow!

Our roads are sheets of ice, so it was a no brainer. We just walked down to the corner store. I bought the ingredients for Rosemary's Christmas Breakfast Cake that she sent to me last year. (You should re-post it, Rosemary!) My big boys are making it for Christmas gifts for the grandparents. We rented a couple of movies and got peppermint lattes. It was a cold walk back, but oh, so much fun!

We just got the call for 2 hours late. I'm still holding out for no school! I'm thinking the sky is too clear for snow. :(

The kid are to be in class two hours late, but teachers and administrators are to report as close to regular time as safety allows.

No school today because of ice. I love to watch snow falling - there's something so peaceful about it when there's no wind and the snow falls straight down. There's beauty in all seasons even if we are freezing!:)

Lisa-I know! Those poor kids are going to be in school 'til July at this point! On the news today at noon, they were already announcing closures for tomorrow.

I thought about taking pictures of my laziness turn beautiful today. I have ice sculptures from buckets of water for the dogs. I put candles and shiny stones in them and they looked so pretty. Its so picture-perfect out today, with the weekend's snow still sticking around and fat, heavy flakes falling thickly. Unusual conditions here on the WA coast. I was amused to see someone just drive by and take a photo of my house. I must admit, though....my humble cottage looks its best in these conditions. I added some photos to my forum album if you'd like to see.

We're expecting more snow today and more freezing cold temps. I'm so over the cold. This is my punishment for continually forgetting to buy door sweeps for those drafty doors. Should be my dh's punishment for telling the contractor to throw away the functioning storm door that I wanted to put up in the back. the beasts of satan or maybe the mom destroyed the back door frame and some of the door so it just whistles thru it. I've replaced the threshold but when the door looks like beavers attacked it you don't get much weather tightness. :o

Friday was bad!!!! Our puppy has had soft poop for weeks now and no relief in sight and when it was black I said enough is enough and took him in to town to the vet. Coming back was horrid and when I left the interstate I was doing some serious praying/wishing because I wasn't even sure if I wa on the exit ramp. Looks like the week is just going to be more of the same. Oh joy!

Awwwh Rosemary can you believe it will be 78 tommorrow and rain. So it will be muggy and warm. It's January for crying out loud:confused:
Now having said that, it could be 38 the next day.
I don't want it to be freezing but a LITTLE cold weather would be nice.
Just a chilly weekend with a big pot of shrimp and okra gumbo would be so nice.
Why can life just be like I want it???Is that so much to ask....really:p

Lisa S

The cabin in the picture was built in the 1970's but they sure did a good job making sure it had character. It's a log cabin with recycled windows and a lot of wood on the inside. It's small, but very cozy. It's right on the lake, (which ours will NOT be), so there is easy access to all the fun.

Lynzee

chyna
01-05-2009, 09:57 AM
Now that would be my idea of winter living. A cabin in the woods and curling up to a nice crackling fire. I am of course purposely forgetting about hauling wood in and all that, that is one of my huge drawbacks to fireplaces. :o:D My parents house is warmed by wood/fireplace and I have the scars to prove it.

We had some nicer weather Saturday I believe but then it got cold again. Matter of fact Saturday we (as in my dh) had plans to drive up to Red Lodge to visit his mom in the hospital and for him to do his fantasy Nascar picks with some friends and we got about halfway and turned around because the roads were just ice. The skiers may be nuts enough to do it but forget it for us! Now there is another snow storm supposed to blow in from Canada (?) and it is getting yucky again. I would just be happy if it would get warm enough to melt the ice tracks on the streets in my town. that is not fun in the least to drive on!

Hello Everyone, :)

We also had freezing rain, resulting in a 90~minute delay for all school openings. The weather then changed and got up to 40~degrees. The other day we were freezing to death with ~10 degrees below zero. We have been having our typical New England weather. If you don`t like it, stick around because it will change. LOL! Is it spring yet?

Ha! Like our weather woman said today... it's only the beginning of winter!

I'm really looking forward to spring, it seems like winter just jumped in announced for us and we didn't even get the fall stuff. One weekend it is shorts and tee shirt out painting the garage and the next week we are knee high in snow. Unreal!!! And it has been cold for months now, not as bone numbing as the beginning of December to mid December but windy chilly. And my dh wants to move to Alaska!!!!! Not me!

Hi Chyna, :)

Most of us had a terrible summer and posted on CL about it. It started off cold. Then that turned to wind and rain. Then that turned to blistering heat. Then back to wind and rain, along with hail. It all kept alternating. And like you had said; it jumped right in to winter after that. We didn`t even get half accomplished that we wanted to.

Alaska! Well... you really won`t be that cold there. Once you start running away from the Polar Bears, and the Grizzlies, you ought to work up a good heated sweat. As beautiful as it appears, the long nights, and the possibility of becoming a human appetizer for the local wildlife, just doesn`t appeal to me.

We do have Black Bear here, which are pretty harmless unless, you come across one with cubs, or you threaten them in some way. You may want to Google search Polar Bear & Grizzly attacks in Alaska. Print them out, and leave them where your hubby can see them. Just trying to be helpful. :p

Hugs,
Linda :)

He wouldn't care about bear attacks. Comes from growing up in the Beartooths. He's in it for the cold, I've told him that I couldn't survive living up there. I get SAD enough here and we get sunlight in the winter, can you imagine 24/7 of night?

I'll visit from the deck of a cruise ship or maybe a visit in the summer (which I hear is wonderous) but winter/fall/spring? No thanks!!!!

Oh forgot, today is snowy turning to rain and then tomorrow it is supposed to be 51 deg. I can't wait for this ice to melt! Ignoring the mess aspect of it though. In my mind the heat will come on and all that snow/ice will magically disappear from the roads and streets somehow ending up in the fields or even the streams. I'm delusional I know.:o I just don't want to think about the slush and water that will be everywhere until it drains away. :D

We had freezing rain here again today, with icy road conditions. The kids were in heaven, all of the schools were cancelled. It was very dreary today. Now we are having fog. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

We got a bit of a surprise snow fall Sunday night which led to icy roads the next morning. At least the sun came out and cleared the streets/roads off. I'm seriously sick of icy roads, keep my yard covered in snow is fine by me. It covers the icky dead grass and mud and looks pretty but stay off the roads!!!! Swear the weather guru said sunny skies today but he was wrong again. Gray and cloudy. Figures.

It's supposed to be snowy all day. Chicago has surpassed the record for snowiest December and we're on our way for breaking records with January. Along with the snow is dangerous cold weather. Tomorrow's high is supposed to -3 degrees!!!

Thanks. Exactly what I was thinking too as I'm struggling to put hats, mittens, boots on two kids. Snow is pain in the butt when you have to go somewhere; it sure is pretty though when you sit and watch it fall from the warmth of your house!

Winter came early here in the Northeast and is really giving us a hard time. We're expecting a couple more inches of snow overnight, into tomorrow, and the temperature (which has been more than cold enough) will be FRIGID!

Spring cannot come soon enough...

In fact, I have a display of snowpeople on the top of my sun parlor radiator that I put out at Christmastime and usually leave 'til the beginning of March or so. Well, this year I am SO sick of snow, that I packed the snowpeople up and put them back in the attic. They cease to be cute this year! :p

Mine??

If you mean mine, thank you! It was my grandparents' house, and we bought it from my uncle (after they passed) in 1978. I've been undecided about selling it (our area has changed so drastically), and am still on the fence...

A BIG part of the problem is that I'm so sentimental. I'm STILL not over having to sell my family home after my father passed away in 2005, and I know I'll be an emotional wreck if I sell this one...

As I've said to my friend, they'll probably wind up taking me feet first from this house! ;)

The HIGH today is suppose to be -7 with wind chills to -35 to -40. Most schools, etc. are closed. Our museums are closed to the public but most of the regular staff has come in.

One of you mentioned throwing down rugs in the winter and then rolling them up in the summer. While we don't have to worry about cold floors (3rd floor walk up) I still do that. Mentally we have to do things like that to feel warm.

I can't wait to get to New Orleans next month - anything will be better than this!!!

Good Morning Everyone, :)

This post is coming to you from the frozen tundra of CT. It is zero right now with a few flakes here and there. I haven`t listened to the weather yet. The kids said we are under a storm watch. So I will check that out. You know how kids are. It is always wishful thinking with them.

ChapterTwo, I like your house. I couldn`t figure out how to make the pic bigger. Anyone have any suggestions if that can be done?

Not much going on here except for everything being so darn cold, and me complaining about it. Maybe if I complain enough, it will go away. :D

Have a good day.

Lisa, I am just getting started on my list of what to grow. We've never done square foot gardening before, so this is a new experiment for us. I hope it works, because I think we would enjoy it and it would actually add to the landscaping of our yard~which needs all the help it can get:p.

I plan on making a larger bed with some rocks from my great grandparent's original homestead house (we recently found the rock from their fireplace mantle) for an herb bed.

Yes, I'll take pictures~and if the garden looks good, I'll share them on here:p

Rosemary

Your temps are very close to mine! Sadly that just makes me feel good that somebody else has the same weather as me. :o We're warming up this weekend to the high 40's or at least last time I checked that was the forecast. They've probably changed it several times over since Sunday. I do know we were supposed to get 3" of the white stuff yesterday, batten the hatches wicked weather on the way, blah blah blah. I don't consider the dusting we got that morning as snow fall and while the temps kept dropping it was hardly noticeable or newsworthy. Suppose that is a good thing right?

I'd take snow over the cold and wind we've had. Nothing as extreme as those in the East but I'm still sick of it.

RoseMary
01-15-2009, 03:04 PM
Yep, sounds just like my forecast for the weekend, too. We must be stuck in the same weather trough (or whatever they call them:p). I'd rather have snow than just cold, too. I went ouside to stack some firewood on the porch and felt like an icicle when I came back in:eek:.

I think it is cold everywhere, right now. My SIL in Orlando has been using her heat for the last few days~and she usually has the a/c on all year. Maybe dreaming of spring will warm us up!

Chyna and Lisa S, I was just thinking about changing my ``Hello Winter`` avatar. Hello my a**! Be gone with you already. :D

Schools were cancelled today due to not being able to keep the school buses up and running. They were also having problems with telephone lines. It is ~14 below zero here. We decided to keep the horse in the barn today. Too darn cold.
The dogs run out side, do their business, and run back in. We are due some more of that white stuff. Like we don`t have enough??

I was listening to the weather on the radio, they said that South Dakota`s temps were ~47 below zero!

One of the good things about not having trees at my house is the fear of finding it trying ot get inside but my neighbor has two huge evergreens that I've watched sway my way a few times. Hunker down, friends and take care of yourselves. Rosemary ~ I'd appreciated any tips you have on surviving without power. Our lake place was out of power for nine days in a row. I'm already thinking how we'll handle that when the time comes.

How are you doing Rosemary? Still with power and toasty? You may have to change the name of your place to Ice Crystal Cottage. At least our winter precip stays solid and doesn't coat everything in ice. Well we did get a little of that a few weeks ago but nothing like what you're getting.

RoseMary
01-28-2009, 12:17 PM
Hi everyone. We were out of electricity off and on all day yesterday. It went out completely last night at nine o'clock and came back on this morning around 8:30. We are glad to have it back!

Our temperatures warmed up some during the day yesterday, so a lot of ice melted out of our trees, which was good, since we got more last night. We've only had a little bit of limb breakage. Northwest Arkansas is a terrible mess. It will take them weeks to clean up. I really feel for them.

Lisa, we do have a woodstove, so heat is not usually a problem. Our ceilings are high, so alot of the heat goes up there without our ceiling fans running, but the temperature is always warm enough. I try to draw up plenty of water ahead of time when we know a storm is on the way. We have a 1000 gallon sand filter on our well, so we can draw water out of the filter manually if we are caught without any already in pitchers, etc. I also keep plenty of kerosene in stock. One thing we did this time was put sand in little fruit jars and stick the tea light candles in them for little bits of light around the house.

Our woodstove has a flat top on it, so we can use it to cook on, which is a big help. We also have a butane camping stove that we can bring in and use (and use outside if it is summertime and the electricity is out). I have a cast iron Dutch oven that I can stick a roast in or soups, etc. To me, the worst part is trying to clean up after cooking. So, having some paper products on hand does help, so you don't have to use all your water on trying to wash dishes. I also like to keep pancake mix that you only add water to. It makes a quick meal and you don't need a lot of ingredients you are trying to manage in the dark. Because, even with a lot of kerosene lamps lit, it is still dark!

Nine days is a long time to be without power, Lisa. We made it twelve days without it in 2000, but I wouldn't want to do it again.

The ice is pretty, but I am like Tanya, I prefer the white stuff that comes down all in one piece:)!

ChapterTwo
01-28-2009, 01:13 PM
I'm so glad you got your electricity back, Rosemary. It seems like you've got it down to a science...you sound very prepared to deal with the elements and what can happen. Good for you! ;)

RoseMary
01-28-2009, 01:44 PM
Thank you, Chapter Two! I wish I really did have it down to a science~it always seems more like an experiment everytime we go through it:D. I will say that you always find something new to do 'next time'.

Lisa S
01-28-2009, 01:49 PM
Rosemary ~ I'm glad you weren't in the part of the state that was the most heavily hit. I was worried about you last night while I was watching the news.

Our wood stove also has a flat top. Our neighbors are remodeling and are giving it to us for nothing. I invested in another dutch oven for the lake ($25 on sale and it's a nice one!)

I'm hoping I can run across another free stove... I want one in the basement too. I'd like to build an inglenook around it. I think it would make for a cozy place to hang out and play cards or something.

I like your idea of kerosene lamps and jars with sand and tea lights. My littlest one doesn't like it when the electricity goes out one bit. We have to follow him everywhere. A little dispersed light might be a great idea.

I always value your advice ~ thank you!

Hi Kim - I appreciate your concern - we made it thru the storm without losing power or trees so for that I'm grateful. No school again tomorrow as most roads are covered in ice but if the sun comes out it won't take long to melt. This is perfect stew or soup weather so now I'm off to the kitchen.:)

Lisa, I love your idea of the ingelnook in the basement. I think you would enjoy having it and it would get a lot of use. I think, with the economy the way it is, a lot more people will start looking at 'home' as the place for entertainment and fun. It could do our society a lot of good!

We are going to have a very spring-like week! We'll be in the sixties Mon-Wed, and in the 70s by Thursday:D.

8" of fresh snow yesterday - after we had all the old stuff melted for the most part :(

Snowed Friday and melted off by Sunday. Supposed to be in the 40's this week which is just a heat wave.

I have a neighbor who doesn't share my love (or like actually) of wind chimes, only reason I don't have all of my out there is because my hubby really doesn't like wind chimes. The neighbor is a snotty brat so I kinda look forward to doing things to annoy her. :o:D

We're very Spring-like over here too - highs near 80 all week! Hooray! I just hope it stays that way! It's so rough to have a week of warm weather and then go back to freezing again!

We've got rain in the Seattle area. We really needed it after a fairly dry winter (except for all that snow in December). Temps are warmish (40s and low 50s, I think) with some sun breaks. Hopefully, spring is on the way. My bulbs are coming up. I can't wait for them to bloom!

Lisa I have some big trees like that too. Some firs and a few cedars. The cedars seem to be more 'supple' in the wind :D:D

I would LOVE that! Thanks! It was supposed to ice/snow tonight but it was 55 at 9:30 tonight, so I think the forecast is seriously wrong...The last two days have been constant downpour, so it has been so nice to listen to the rain on the metal roof.

Mmmm, rain on a metal roof!

It is 5:30 am right now and I got up about an hour ago (ugh, cold bug/sore throat keeping me awake) to a little less than an inch of snow. It's suppose to warm up quite a bit today, so it will all melt off :( I'm in Middle Tn and we just don't get decent snow anymore.

It's March 1st- we haven't had any snow---9-12 predicted! :eek::confused:

What's up with this...on the Eastern Shore!

Rain on the metal roof is heavenly! Too bad DH had to go out of town yesterday ;)

Well, maybe the forecasters were just late with their predictions...It's COLD and still pouring today, and they are expecting snow to roll in later. I really, really, really do not want to go out in this weather and train dogs today. I'm hoping at least a couple of my clients want to reschedule!

Breezy, Thanks for sending the snow...We've got 6" and it's still snowing!!! The dogs and I went on a 2.5 hour walk on the Greenway today and had a blast. We even saw a naked guy playing in the snow! I'll post pictures soon!

Hi CohenCottage- OMGooodness what BEAUTIFUL pics! I love your home--it's so charming- as are the doggies too! I have a yellow lab- hates the rain- we're getting our first snow right now I wonder how she'll like it! :D

Thanks ladies! I didn't take any photos of the naked guy...gotta love living in a college town. The snow is still here, and it just stopped recently. The dogs and I walked to the park across the street (it's next to the river that goes through town), and then walked down to another park/greenway. It was so much fun!

Our power was down for a long time, but it's back now. There have been tons of accidents, and lots of trees are coming down. Our neighbor lost a huge limb from her old oak, and it missed our power pole by less than a foot. Tons of power lines are down too.

Tonight I made guacamole and chicken and dumplings, so it's been a good day.
Hope everyone is enjoying the snow!

naked dog or a naked human? If canine I'm bummed, I wanted to see a crestie in the snow. Well at least one who isn't staring at me with sad puppy dog eyes. :p

Didn't you get enough snow when you were in Colorado? Are you now addicted to the white stuff? We had snow last week and now we are back in the warmth. This crazy weather is making me sick, seriously. This cold just keeps coming back, it needs to be gone before we take our trip to Disney.

Oh, your house is lovely in the snow. I love snow (when I don't have to drive in it). I was hoping for a picture of the naked guy, though. Maybe you'll see him again. :)

We had lots of rain this morning, and I splashed through puddles in my pre-dawn walk. Then it cleared up this afternoon and was beautiful. We're probably going to have rain all week. We need it, though, so I can't complain.

You really have to be careful of those snow-covered limbs. One fell off my sister's tree on Christmas morning and made some big cracks in the body of my poor car. I guess I should be grateful it wasn't my head.

Your walk with the dogs sounds like a marvelous time, and anything with dumplings has to be absolute culinary heaven!

Yesterday, snowing sideways when I came down from the mountains. Ice pellets against the metal chimney at 5:30 this morning, then partly cloudy with some clearing this afternoon. Tomorrow, who knows?

Trust me, y'all didn't want pics of the naked guy...skinny college kid with tattoos. The dogs and I ventured back out this morning, but the crunchy, icy snow wasn't as much fun as yesterday. I spent most of the day cleaning and puttering inside. The dumplings were heavenly, and I use frozen dumplings, so they are really easy. Always use Mary Hill's Dumplings (Say Yes to Dumplings and No to Drugs). Hope everyone is safe and sound and nobody has had any tree damage!

Yesterday this part of Maryland had it's first snow (March 1st  )-- and work was closed :D.... cleaned closets etc...

Our newest little rescue dog (mixed shepard??)- saw his first snow- and he ran off chasing a deer... I wondered what would he do if he actually caught the deer??? He came back after an intense run-thank goodness cause I was freaking out...

Stay warm everyone~ spring is on it's way!

We're supposed to get cold air again and snow this weekend. My narcissus is beginning to bloom. I'm wondering if I should try to cover it with plastic to protect it, or whether these bulbs do okay in snow? It's not likely to be deep...just an inch or two at most, so maybe I can just chance it. I hate to have them die before they even bloom. This will be the first time in my entire life that I've planted bulbs that actually came up out of the ground and got flowers on them. Got any advice?

Shabby, It will either make it this year or you'll have to wait for next year. It'll probably be just fine. If it makes you feel better to be proactive, you could throw some bark mulch around the base. I'm so thrilled to see bulbs coming up!

After weeks of clouds and rain we have sunshine!! :) Talk about a mood lifter. We Californians are very spoiled about our sunshine we get very moody with out it.I want to hit the nursery and get some plants but the ground is too waterlogged....ahh but there's lots of empty planters in my yard ;).

Against all forecasts the sun is out now and melting the ice and snow off the roads so all is good. I already shoveled the deck off for the dogs so this will just make it better for their poor shivering bodies. This could be why they hate or dislike the puppy. He has hair and loves playing in the white frozen acid we get here. :D they'd prefer to move south to the heat.

shabbychick
03-09-2009, 05:32 PM
I had four inches of snow at my house today. I work ten miles south of here, and it did snow there, but there was only a dusting. I was really surprised to get home and find so much snow at my place. So I got out my trusty dust pan and "shoveled" the driveway so it doesn't just turn into ice. It's supposed to get down into the 20s tonight. My poor narcissus is going to freeze to death!

Here in the Northeast, our weather continues to be up and down...fifties predicted tomorrow, and then down to the twenties on Friday night (Spring!) Mother Nature is playing lots of jokes on us this year...
