So here is a pic of my house from the front. The big window on the right is the front living room, the big window on the left is our bedroom. The windows are identical.

My question is, I have had verical blinds up for a long time and am sick of them. I want to first change out the living room. Do I need to keep the style of window coverings the same for both windows, since they both face the front and are the same style, or can I put curtains in the living room, and I will probably keep the verical blinds in the bedroom.

I have always tried to keep the same thing, curtains, blinds, etc. But I am just ready for a change. Thanks.

Well, in my opinion, since there is distance between the windows, one of them is set back a ways, and they're set in two different types of walls, it would be fine to do drapes in one and blinds in the other. I don't believe things always have to match as long as they don't clash horribly. But my relatives think all my taste is in my mouth, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

the tree is blocking the view of the window on the left, so i think you are good to go if you want to change the one in the living room...i have had several glasses of wine and narrowly escaped having to skinny dip tonight, so you may want to take my advice with several grains of salt today. :o

I think you should change the living room blinds - they are horizontally striped and so is the exterior wall. Are you still going with the beachy look inside? I'd go with long, long drapes sorta like this:

My family room in the back is my coastal themed room. My front living room is well, really a mismash of whatever. It now it has my flowered couch, tv, a oak secretary, a chair, couple other antiques.

I do like that style of curtains you posted and that was kind of what I was thinking too. I do daycare, and people are walking up to my house 2 times a day, I kind of like having something over my windows so you can't see in so well, yet I love the sunlight and being able to see out.

I am going to paint my front living room this summer a golden yellow color to match my dining room.

Well, you could always put sheers up as well as the curtains - that would look nice!

I'd usually say that all the front windows should give the same look to the street. It is a pain I know..but since your tree basically blocks the bedroom window you really can't see that anyway. So, I'd reccomend what Heather said.... sheers then long panel drapes over that. Then the sun can still shine through but you have some privacy.

I really like the look of the curtains that were posted, and if you wanted more privacy, you could always do those bamboo blinds (like they have at Walmart) too. Would the kids mess up something delicate like sheers?

I normally keep the dc kids in the family room, so we are not in the front room much. I am going to start looking. I am planning on painting the room when I am off in 3 weeks. Bad me, I want to repaint the back family room I just painted....I never did really like the color, it was what hubby liked. I am always changing my mind...

Don't feel bad about changing your mind about painting...We do it all the time. In fact, we are having a conversation right now about how the color for the back door is too light and not green enough. It was painted YESTERDAY! Why is it that even if you paint a sample on the door or wall, it always looks different when you paint it for real?

Somebody told me once that if you paint something you should wait a week or so and then see how you feel about it!

It has probably been at least 3 months. It wasn't what I wanted to begin with, but hubby kept saying "that will be too dark". Why did I listen to him, as I am the one who painted the damn room.

OK well if it's a damn room then it needs repainting! Post a pic and we'll give you our 2 cents - maybe it just needs wainscoting or something.

Better choice of paint and new window coverings, after I get this graduation party paid for an some $$ saved up again.

Paint doesn't usually look like the chip - because of room size, area that's painted, time of day, which way your windows face, paint type (flat, eggshell, gloss). I have become a firm believer in buying the little test size of a certain paint (it's amazing just how much this will cover).

I did our bath a couple of weeks ago in a soft grey that depending on the time of day, appears blue, violet or true grey. At certain times it even looks like one wall is a completely different color than the rest . . . and all the paint came out of the same can!!!

Ugh paint.
I was on another board and they were raving about a Benjamin Moore paint color, Olive branch. So I got a sample and tried it on my kitchen walls... can you say puke on a wall. It was so awful looking in that particular room. So I totaly chickened out and went for a light tan to just neutralize the room. Granted, I had lived with the green for many a year that everyone loved but me, so the neutral color is just fine with me.

Marie the front of your house looks so nice!

Regarding the window covering, the rule of thumb is for them all to match on the front. It is a personal choice, but if the color is similar the type doesn't have to matchy-match. Panels with sheers would look very nice.
