How is everyone fairing with the weeds this year? I swear I've been invaded by those grass weeds and goats heads. The grass is actually killing my roses and overtaken a few flower beds. The goats heads will be a problem until everyone in the neighborhood attacks them, there are a few people who just don't get how horrible they are.

I've been ammending some beds so hopefully the soil conditioner will act like a mulch like they suggest it could. We'll see on that one. I have a sinking feeling that this years summer is just going to be a major challenge.

How is the rest of the country faring?

We had crazy weeds here b/c of all the rain, but Hubs attacked them with roundup and now we are clear. We hate to use chemicals, but it was really necessary this time, and our plan is to do heavy mulch so we don't end up in a fix next year. Our biggest "weed" is oak seedlings from our trees! Arrrrggghhh...

Actually, the weeds have been ok this year - I was all over it from the get-go. My best gardening year ever!

The rain has brought a lot of weeds this year, but we've been pulling and covering with weed block, newspaper and mulch. So far, nothing has come through, though I'm sure it's going to be a summer long battle!

While sitting on the front steps I glanced over at my campion/mint bed and what do I see. Those wretched golden rod plants. I don't know who got them going in there but I'm going to smack them if I ever see them. We call them the roots of all evil. I have no problem putting them up in the boulevard and letting them go for broke, heck I'm all for it but stay outta my mint bed! By the way Rosemary, those three plants you gave me last year (??) have really taken off in there. I can hardly wait for them to bloom. :)

As for the newspaper trick, these weeds won't take no for an answer and are growing thru the layers. And I even used more than suggested. Guess as long as they don't go too crazy I'll be fine with it. Plus I'm planning their doom with hot water/vinegar.

Tanya, I'm glad to hear that they are doing well! I think they are really hard to kill!

My stupid chickens got in the bed and scratched up all of my blue flax and several other plants last year(I figured they had reseeded, but don't see any)~but I still have some seeds you sent. Can they be planted now? Or should I wait until fall?

by all means do it now, they pretty much self sow constantly so you should be safe. If they don't work out let me know and I'll harvest some more for you. darn chickens. :p
