I was watching a popular decorating show last night and the host said: there should be at least one thing in every room that is whimsical. So, what is the one thing in YOUR rooms that is whimsical?

Kitchen:
Dining Room:
Living Room:
Bathroom:
Patio/Porch:

We'll just leave bedrooms alone right now....

Well, the only whimsical thing we have is in the bedroom...My grandmother's camel back sofa that has been recovered with white faux ostrich vinyl and the wooden parts are white lacquer.

Fun thread!

Kitchen: A black and white photograph of a French Grandfather riding a bike, with his young Grandson hanging on behind him.

Dining Room: A "running" wooden bunny.

Living Room: A framed print - by Edward Robert Hughes called Midsummer's Eve. It depicts a young women in a forest at night surrounded by fairies.

Bathroom: A 1930's perfume bottle filled with vintage velvet pansies.

Patio/Porch: Another bunny!

Heather, do you remember in an old CL issue where there was a settee in an entryway that was done that way? That's where I got the idea... The upholsterer did a pretty bad job, so we need to get it fixed, but it's pretty cool.

It was hard to find CL here (but I used the website OFTEN for ideas) so I'm not sure what you're talkin' about.

I'll see if I can find it or clean the folded laundry up so I can take a photo of my couch!

Lets see, in the kitchen I painted the blue glass knobs on my drapery rod black and white polka dots to go with the kitchen better. In the entry hall(which you see when in the LR) I painted the bottom half of the wall a harlequin and hot glued old pearl buttons at the intersections. In the front bath I have this little bronze statue of a little chereb boy whizzing , (I know kinda weird but it was from my folks house don't know where they got it). Back yard its probably the plates I hung on the fence and the metal daisies I have out there.
Fun thread!

My feeling is you should have at least one family thing in each room and/or one red thing. I do like the idea of whimsy, though!

Bathrm - a froggy & birdhouse

Porch - a statue of a girl with a straw hat in one hand and a kitty in the other with 2 kitties at her feet - a statue of a fairy holding a flower and a statue of a fairy/elf

I'm not sure that I have anything that would be considered "whimsical", but I'm loving this thread!

I have heard that there should be something red in every room, CD. I can't remember why though.

I think anything that stands out as fun or capricious could be considered whimsical. You know, the 'thing' in the room that a first time visitor might comment on?

Breezy - I just remembered. I have a little frog doorstop in my bathroom that my brother gave me from Spain. :D

So Heather - you started the thread. What's in your rooms? And come on everyone - tell us what's in your rooms! Children's art. A funny photo. Surely there is something in every room that puts a smile on your face!

Well, see that's just it! I don't really have much whimsy here. It looks boring as a matter of fact. It's not like we are boring people at all - opposite really. I just don't want to go out and buy something for each room, know what I mean? It should just "happen" - memories of how/why we got it... a conversation piece, a story to tell.

Don't feel bad Heather, we aren't whimisical either and I've just accepted it...We are starting to slowly accumulate unique pieces, but I'd rather be slow and boring than end up with junk I don't like.

The things that I collect that are " hard core " vintage seem to be very whimsical. Back in the day chalkware was in style..lol but now it is quirky and pretty grotesque compared to the slick things today.
BUT in 30 years these things will be real treasures because the era will have been gone for so long. Most of the quirkiest things came from the 5 and 10 stores. You know 5 cents and 10 cents. LOL Can you imagine.

I remember the one in my hometown. Morgan and Lindsey. I bought my teacher some Evening in Paris perfume there. Oh my.......:o

Some of garden club friends, that are in their 70's, take a walk down memory lane when they come over. It is so much fun. Old Louisiana.....I have a bottle of Hadacol that "Couzan LeBlanc" sold off a wagon that came to town. Vitamins and alcohol.:p

The old days are funny now ;)

We had a 5 and 10 called "TG&Y" when I was little, and I used to LOVE going with my grandmother!!

Okay lets see : whimsical stuff

Kitchen: the kitchen is where all the kids art is displayed so I have on permanent display in the window a cute green egg carton catepillar -love him
I have a bunny lamp and a sign that says fresh cinnamon rolls- yeah right like I am getting up early to bake those - it makes me laugh all the time.

Dining Room: tons of bunnies but I'd say the whimsical is the "chandelier" people always comment on how different and cool it is- well it is a kitchen pot holder that is why..but i needed a big statement as the room is big and saw it on clearance so put it up instead.

Living Room: well this is the man room - so I don't get much say- it has the big tv and my hubby's plane pictures of the planes he has flown. It does have one item that is so called out of place a little childs chair that has a woven seat - it is painted red/white/blue and is really distressed. why? it was mine when i was about 3 so as my kids say - it is realllllly old :)

Bathroom: a rusty bird soap holder in the 1/2 bath

Patio/Porch: a fireplace mantle with no fireplace, and a chicken feeder as a flower planter

These may be a little bit too whimsical for some of you:), but I couldn't resist. I got them at a flea market last week.

I thought the watermelon was very summery, and I just couldn't resist the pig:p.

No such thing as "too whimsical", RoseMary! I LOVE that piggy pitcher!!
And you're so right - nothing says "summer" more than watermelon. Great finds! ;)
