View Full Version : I want it but I can't afford it...

When we were at the beach for Labor Day, I found the most perfect cupboard ever for turning into a vanity with a vessel sink in our guest bath. Unfortunately, it is $485 and the best price I could get was $425...still too much for me. I figured this probably happens to a lot of us, so I thought it might be therapeutic to share what we want and can't have. Sort of like whining with pictures...
So here is mine...Can't you see it with grasscloth wall paper, cool sconces, and a big mirror?

Oh yeah, that's nice!

Very cool- cc. And I did not blow off your question about if I had anything that could hold a vessel sink. I just dont' think I do. I have dressers but they are low and pretty plain..I will keep my eye out though and if I see something I can take a pic and post it on here for you..
I would need a bit more info though..such as type you are looking for, size- h, w, d. Does it need to be nice stained wood or do you want painted? Can it need work
you see...more info girl.. :)

I'm pretty flexible with specifications... anywhere from 40" -70ish" wide, 25"ish deep, 30-35" tall. It could be nice wood or need work...If it needs work, I will most likely paint it black and distress it. If the top won't work, I could always do marble or granite or something too. I do like the doors on the bottom for all the sink parts, plus other drawers for storage. I'm trying to stay away from anything too ornate or fancy...Is that enough info?

Wonderful information darling...I will keep my eye open and camera handy to take pics of anything that might work. I am writing your specs in my - "always with me notebook of wants" right this minute..
Oh yeah one more question - price?

Thanks!! I'm honored to be a part of your notebook... Anything $300 and under would be great.

Wow, CC! I can see it with grasscloth wall paper, cool sconces, and a big mirror - that would be gorgeous!
I also like the idea of "whining with pictures". My mad money consists of few pennies and a little lint in my pocket right now, but I'd love to have a large glass cloche. Sigh.

09-16-2009, 06:13 AM
Oh Zuzu, that cloche is lovely. I love them, but I'm not quite sure where I would display them in my house. Do you rotate the things you display since space is an issue in a tiny house?
Here are the sconces I want too...http://www.lampsplus.com/Products/Jonathan-Adler-Ventana-Nickel-Plug-In-Wall-Lamp__31072.html

I have a miniature cloche, so I can move it around from place to place - no problem. :p If I had a large one, it would probably stay on my baker's rack and I'd change what was in it pretty often. Fun to dream.
Those sconces are very classy!

I bet the tiny cloche is so adorable in the tiny house!
Has anybody used a cloche to grow a terrarium or put over plants?
Tammy, here is a photo of another vanity style/shape that I like...

CC have you seen the Home Depot collection of cabinets?

There's a bunch there I would LOVE to have....

No Heather, I haven't seen those, but they look great! Are they available in stores or do you have to special order them?
Heather
09-17-2009, 06:25 AM
I think it's special order.... I was reading the shipping section and it says they ship to Canada!!
Did you see any you liked?

I like that white one you posted the photo of, but would have to get it in black...

I must admit I've never bought anything (i.e. furniture, clothes) online... I like to feel and see the quality of the item first. I remember you found your stools online but what if you didn't like them? Did that company have a good return policy? What about the cost of shipping back?
CohenCottage
09-17-2009, 08:50 AM
I've bought those stools and an upholstered headboard online and it was a good experience both times.
Overstock does have a good return policy, and the shipping to return them wouldn't have been that much. I also read a ton of reviews on them before I bought them. I know a lot of people that have gotten good quality pieces from Overstock, so I wasn't too worried.
We got our headboard from West Elm and had to return the first one b/c it wouldn't assemble correctly. It's a wingback headboard so there are two side pieces and they wouldn't go in right. So West Elm paid to have it returned and sent us another one. It wouldn't do right either, so my hubby just rigged it rather than dealing with the return process again. I think it was a design flaw which is why the thing was on sale to start with... It isn't very sturdy, but it looks GREAT, and that's really all that matters, right? Just kidding! But for the price, I didn't expect to get a high quality piece.
The only real online problem I've had is when I bought those baskets from PB and they came in and were orangey red in color instead of natural. Shipping wasn't too bad to return them, though.

Hey guys I buy tons online...I just placed an order with home decorators..everything was great so I didn't have to do the return thing..not sure how it was.
Shoot I've ordered a sofa, washer & dryer, fridge, mudroom cabinets, sons wall of cabinets for his room, boys beds, etc...no problems at all.
Now Lowes on the other hand just seem to keep screwing me. I go in there to order and they seem to mess up every special order I do...arrrghhh.
My island cabinets came in painted black - not distressed black just plain black. But I am not willing to wait for another 6 weeks to get more so, I'll either keep them plain black or distress them myself...

I want an outdoor fireplace out back so we can roast marshmallows and just sit by it in the fall...

Oh Tammy, that would piss me off SO BAD. Could they rush ship a replacement? I would be too chicken to distress it myself, but you are a professional!
Also, I found a food safe product for sealing butcherblock. It's bioshield herbal oil: http://www.bioshieldpaint.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=268

Tammy we've been talking about building an out door fireplace too! I have tonnes more rocks (they come in 6"X12" sheets) from when I built our patio but now we'll have to wait until spring. Here's a pic of my rock patio and some pics I've been collecting. I'll put your pic in with them too!

oooo  i love those photos Heather and Tammy! i want one too, but we don't have room. that's why we decided to go with that funky green stove for the porch. hopefully it should be ready to go soon.
Heather
09-17-2009, 12:45 PM
I remember that stove, you posted a pic! Are you putting it on the front or back porch?
CohenCottage
09-17-2009, 12:48 PM
back porch... it would probably get stolen if we put it on the front porch! hubs wants to cover the porch and then run gas to the stove. it should be nice and cozy and would make it so we could use that space year round since our winters are pretty mild.
Heather

Dunno where I'd put it though...

That is a nice rug Heather. Love the bright pops of color. Wow that would be an awesome rug to put out after spending a long winter inside- you could rush in spring with it..it would make me smile.
On the fireplace- yes I have a bunch saved too...here are some more.

Thanks Tammy!
So far I'm going with one that has a hearth in front (the most kid-friendly as we can make it) and "shelves" on either side like this one I posted below.
What about you?

I love that rug Heather! Could you put it in your kitchen or a sun room? It's so cheery...

Ok back to the outdoor fireplace plans .....
Now I'm thinking I'd like to use a wood stove and build a stone fireplace around it. It would "help" with safety concerns (i.e. did I build it properly and is it safe???). Would anybody have any pictures of this being done? This is the kind of stove I'd like to use and I'd like to build shelves (countertop?) on either side of it. Yes? No?

Love that wood stove!! My concern is that it would put out indirect heat but not direct heat, so I wonder how warm it would be to stand next to...but if you put stone around it, it would heat the stones and they would radiate heat.
Here is something I found on the interwebz today. I think the white stove, fridge, and dishwasher would look just smashing in my kitchen. What do y'all think?

You girls are toooo funny . . .
love the idea of posting our "wants" - right now I want an old buffet that I could put my t.v. on and then change the drawers to a false front so the would drop down and expose my dvr and other t.v. "stuff". I'll find a picture of what I want and post.
I have a friend who has this wonderful Mexican cupboard that would also work and she just has it sitting in storage. Last year we talked about my swapping out doing some kitchen curtains for it but then I took this job and I just don't have the time. :(

cheapdiva, we've been loving the sideboard TV thing in our living room, so i'd highly recommend it. our credenza has sliding doors which is almost as good as drop down. it hides clutter at least!

This is my latest "want". It is a good price, and I can afford it, but have no place for it. I found it on craigslist for only $100. Can you just see this in a kitchen as an island. Put a wood counterop on it and it would be so so much funhttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e236/chunkymama/coca%20cola%20cooler/cocacolacooler.jpg[/IMG]

I think Halloween is fun ... I'm not really ready ... but I'll get there.
Plus, go buy that coke island dream thing. If you do not do something with it in a year you can re-post it. (Better yet, you can go ahead and clean it up, make it a kitchen island, and re-post it.) Just a thought.
Good luck!

... in the south it is sometimes warm for Halloween. It might be nice to put some softdrinks on ice out for the trick-or-treaters and/or their parents. Just a random thought ...

I still have to approach hubs about this. I love the idea of an island, but unfortunately my kitchen is too small. But it would also make a great stand for my big screen tv in my living room. We are on house remodeling overload after the past few weeks. In three weeks we have redone 2 bedrooms completely (remove popcorn ceiling, strip wallpaper, prime, paint, move in new furniture, etc), and also had granite installed installed in our kitchen. Hubs is exhausted and would probably kill me if I suggest going and getting the coke cooler. It has not sold yet, so I am going to bide my time and bring it up in the next few days. We are going away for our anniversary on November 7th, so I will show it to him than. If it is still available when we get back, well than it was meant to be;)
