View Full Version : Question - Color of Exterior of House
ChapterTwo

Hi, Everyone...
I have a decorating question, and who better to ask than YOU!
I'm having the exterior of my (new-to-me) house painted a medium dusty green color, with white trim. There are shutters on the house, and I planned to do them white, with a white railing and white trim. I like the crispness of the green/white. The painter is telling me that it's too much white, and he suggests black railing/shutters. I hate black and I don't think I'll be happy with that. I just wondered if anyone had any photos of any color house with white trim/shutters. I'm probably going to go that way anyway, but it would settle me down if I could get an idea of how it looks.
I know there is a computer program that allows you to see the colors on a photo of your own house, but I still don't have my computer set up...waiting to find a desk that will fit my new (small) room.
Thanks for any suggestions. Hopefully, I'll be back to post in the not too distant future. SO much to do here. Hope you're all doing fine...:)

I did find one pic of a grey house with white shutters and trim and a black door. I thought it looked great. Maybe you could do the white shutters and trim and than a colored door. I love red doors. They look so happy and inviting. Here is the pic:)http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e236/chunkymama/shutter%20house/housewithwhiteshutters.jpg

Thanks so much for that photo, vintage girl, which makes me think that my idea of the white shutters/trim will be fine.
The front door is weird on my house...it's just a storm door, and then there's a little foyer and THEN there is the front door. So no one can really see the front door so much, unless you're going into the house. And the painters are going to paint inside the foyer (which has the same shingles as the house - weird) the same green color as the rest of the house.
I really like red doors too...love them on white houses, especially. But if I paint my door red, everyone's going to think that Santa lives there (with the green shingles!) :D

If you'd like C2, PM me with a picture of your house and what options you're thinking about and I can do a mock up. I did that with our house to decide which colours to paint!

Thanks so much for the offer, Heather...part of the problem is my Olympus camera is broken...no matter what battery I put in, it says "battery empty". Grrrrr. It's my second Olympus and it will be my last.
Thanks again to vintage gal for that photo - I DID tell the painters to go with the white.
And yarborough house, thanks for the pics and the note - I hope I didn't offend you re my crack about the red door, and Christmas! :o
Both your house and your sister's house are GORGEOUS!
I am hoping to get a new camera soon, and the painters should be done in a few days (it rained yesterday and today, so no progress...) When all that happens, I'll post a pic for you.

CT- you didn't offend me. I thought the same thing when she wanted a red door..but it adds just the right punch at the front. Mine is a wooden door as my storm door is black. I'd love to lose the storm door but it actually has the best seal to outside winds and such. Oh well.
Can't wait to see the pictures. I love outside transformations.

Here's the thing . . . when they (painters) "suggest" something, it's how they do it. REMEMBER you're paying them!! It's your money (and your problem) if you aren't happy with it.
A co-worker here is having major renovations done to a foreclosure she bought this summer. Because she got it through a program with the city of Milwaukee, they help bring it up to code and other items. HOWEVER she still has to pay for the contractors (though the city offers a nearly no-interest loan to get the work done) and they keep doing things she doesn't want done or not doing what she does want. I keep saying "whose money are they spending?"
Contractors - sheesh!

Hi,
My friend just forwarded me this site as I am in the same boat as you !
Just painted out exterior Benjamin Moore Guacamole green and we have white trim and are adding a white portico to the front with a wood door & storm door. Having same dilemma with what color shutters to do. My husband thought white would look great and I am hesitant as well, but from recent pictures I've seen, really gives it a crisp clean look. I would love to see a picture of what you ended up doing.

Your house is very very pretty:) Love your color choices. I think white shutter would be lovely and very fresh looking. I love bright colors, so I would probably do red shutters, as they would really pop against the green and white. But bright is not for everyone, so white would probably be a good choice:D

Nothing to add except I love the colors of all these house pictures. I don't have shutters because we are brick.;) I think the green and white will look great.

My choice would be green with white shutters and a trim of black.
Three colors gives it more dimension and more interesting to look at.

Thank you Vintage Girl. I think we are definitely going to go with the white shutters. I love color but not sure i could do red shutters even though they may look great ! Appreciate your input. :)

Your house is lovely and will look great with white shutters. I am repainting the trim on my house this summer and will be changing my red shutters to green. But I am changing the trim to red, it was green before. If I had my choice, I would paint the entire house red. Can you tell I love red:D Be sure to post some pics when you get the shutter done:)
