My mother ~ do it right the first time or don't do it at all

My father ~ there's two ways to do things - the easy way and the hard way

I personally like - if it aint broke don't fix it & don't bite the hand that helps you

My Gramma always told us, ``You only live life once. Do it right, and don`t embarass yourself.``

Dad ``So you fell of the horse. Get back on. At least you got to experience the fall.``

Me to my kids. ``Never be afraid to accomplish your goals. Never not try something because of fear. The cast always comes off in 6 to 8 weeks.

Gramma ``Don`t let the door hit ya, where the good Lord split ya.`` That was told if we complained.

All the female members of our family. ``You need to eat all of that. There are starving children in China.`` Of course me being a smart *ss, I would say, ``Then feed it to them.`` :D

Gramma ``With out pain you would not know the joy of being happy.``

Gramma ``Don`t eat green apples. They will give you Collie Wobbles.`` I still don`t know what Collie Wobbles are. :p

Gramma ``Never go to bed angry. And never let a love one leave with out kissing them, and telling them you love them.``

I don't remember any poetic sayings, but the messages were:

Work hard and work well.
Be kind.
Treat people well.
Honesty is one of the most important things in life.
Family is THE most important thing in life.
Let those around you know you love them.

"Don't forget your raising", "Just because everybody else is doing it, doesn't mean you have to," and my dad's favorite saying to me and my brother at the dinner table: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

So many good~ wonderful sayings...

I particular like the one from Zuzu parents:
Parents - Leave things in better shape than you found them.

My grandmother (who was a beautican) always said:

Change your pillowcase everynight- to prevent acne.

Ya know I think it did work...I never had acne as a teen~ changing the pillowcase every night...

Yes beauticans are so very special...what would we do without them! My grandmother had a beauty shop all pink and lavender (hey she was a cottage gal!)...it always smelled sooooooooooo wonderful walking in there...

I miss those times. :o

Gosh...I love this board! So full of great stuff!

My Mom (aged 84) still says things as she did while I was growing up:

1) "Use up, Wear our, Make do, Do without."
2) "Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT."
3) "Turn the other cheek"
4) "Love the ones who are hardest to love. What reward is it for you to love the 'easy' ones?"
5) "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
6) "Anything worth having is worth waiting for."
7) "Always look for the bright side."
8) "Wants and needs are very different things."
9) "Never say never"
10) "No such thing as 'can't.'

And Daddy used to say:

1) "Don't let it bother you when somebody lies about you. Live your life so that nobody believes it."
2) "Put your wants in one hand and spit in the other. See which one gets full fastest."
3) "This, too, shall pass." (and it always did!)

It pays to listen to your parents... :) They really DID/Do know something! ~Kath

My grandmother was a hair dresser and always said:

--Change your pillowcase every night to have a nice complexion
--Tighten the mayo jar lid (what does this have to do with her profession  )
--Use a bath brush on your back in the shower so pimples will go there and not on your face
--Lemon juice to lighten hair in the summer

Gigi...

I was a hairdresser for awhile. I've heard of mayonnaise applications for dry scalp. Maybe that was it.

Also...brush your hair 100 strokes every night for sheen.

Sprinkle baby powder into hair and brush, brush, brush to remove oil from your hair. (Old wives tales!)

Never heard the acne ones though.

I have so many sayings from my parents. Mainly my Dad. Here are some of his favorites:

If wishes were fishes we would all live in the sea

Don't sit on cold rocks, you will get piles

Call me whatever you want, just don't call me late for dinner

If it smells like poo, looks like poo, it is poo (edited :)

Always love your family best and first

Your children are a reflection of yourself, so be a good example

Smile, be happy and always wear clean underwear (that's my mom's)

I feel good all under

The best lesson I learned from my parents, was to be myself no matter what. Own myself, both good and bad. Always be positive and those around you will be positive also. And most important, love your family, and tell them everyday you love them, as you never know when they will be gone.

RIP Daddy
I miss you

Vintage Girl--- Your father sounds like such a wonderful, fun loving person- I know you must miss him terribly. Hugs

My mother's sayings were, I'm afraid, far less positive. Here they are:

The worm will turn

The chickens always come home to roost (you can see that she was really into cosmic justice)

Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas.

And here's my favorite, which I heard more than once in high school: if you go out in that tight sweater, you're going to be raped, and it will be your own fault.

Maybe some parental sayings aren't worth passing down to the next generation. :)

Your grandmother had a preoccupation with acne didn't she?:p

Um from my honorary great uncle

Ish kabible. Not sure what language that reallly is or what it really means but when he said it then it meant ick.

When passing a feedlot or the corral my mom would say the smell was the smell of money. My brother and I insist that money does not smell like poop. She thinks we are smart aleks.

I can't really think of any wisdom-isms. Unless you count how great Elvis was. My mom could go on and on about that subject. ;)

I didn't have such profound parents as the rest of you all.

My mother always said

Because I said so..
If you don't quit crying, I'll give you something to cry about
Wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident.
Pretty is as pretty does
You are known by the company you keep.

Oh Chyna, just what are you trying to say...:)

Koolmimi...I heard everyone of those, as well!

Chyna....Ish Kabibble made his way into Mom's speaking too, every now and then.... she told me once that I looked like Ish Kabibble....when I parted my hair down the middle and it was kind of 'glued down' to my head. Does that help you any?

Also heard : "you don't always have to look like a fashion plate"

"you'll understand when you have kids of your own"

and the spoken-by-EVERY-Mom-in-history....the clean underwear thing!

I remember saying I'd NEVER say any of those things to my kids....but guess what....I DID.
