Soup is one of my favorite foods. Most of the soup I make is just a bunch of leftovers thrown together with broth in a crock pot, sort of like Stone Soup. When I was very poor, I used to make soup with chicken hearts and leftovers. I love chicken hearts, in spite of the fact that they're not very healthy for you, and they made a cheap, rich meal. It's still one of my all-time favorite dishes. Other soups I like:
lentil
oxtail
beer-cheese
split pea
potato bacon cheddar
salmon bisque
Most of the soups I like best are thick and rich and salty. Yum.

My all time favorite is tomato dill - a recipe I got from one of my favorite restaurants in Door County, WI. When I get some time (haha), I'll post it. I make huge vats of it because everyone loves this soup and I give it away, freeze it and just want to consume it for a week straight.
Next favorite would be from a place we used to have breakfast most Saturday mornings when we still lived in Appleton, WI - Mary's restaurant - chicken dumpling soup. When we go home for visits in the fall and winter we usually stop there and buy a quart to bring home for dinner. Since we do nothing but drive back and forth from Thanksgiving to New Year's, we'll be buying soup there a lot!

I just made potato/white bean soup for the first time, last week, and it was really good (if I do say so, myself!) ;)

That tortilla soup sounds fabulous, Heather! I'll have to try it this week. I'm going to try either chicken and rice or chicken and orzo soup tonight with mushrooms.

I forgot to say that I add black beans to it too.

I was wondering if you added beans. My friend from college used to make a similar soup with black beans and chicken, but yours sounds better. I love anything with cilantro.
A few years ago Real Simple had a recipe for chicken and rice soup that you serve over avocado and lime juice with cilantro on top. It was wonderful! I'll post the recipe if I can find it...

I just made a huge pot of Kitchen Sink Chili last this weekend. I call it that because I put everything and I do mean everything in it. Recipe if anyone wants to try it:
2-3 lbs ground beef
2 cloves minced garlic
black beans
pinto beans
kidney beans
1 can sweet corn
1 cup each: chopped red pepper, green pepper, yellow pepper
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 can chopped tomatoes with garlic
1 cup fresh mushrooms chopped
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped jalapenos if you want it hot
I also put in a cup of spaghetti sauce
2 tablespoons of sugar or sugar substitute
Half a jar of zesty salsa
You can basically throw in anything else you have leftover as far as veggies. I brown the meat first with 1/3 of the onions and the garlic. While the meat is browning, I put all the other ingrediants together and simmer them. Once the meat is done, I drain, add to other ingrediants and simmer for about 2-3 hours. Heat to boiling just before serving. This is great served with cornbread muffins. This is a very thick and hearty chili and everyone I serve it to loves it.
