It is sheer luck that I am typing this right now. As some of you know I got a vintage stove last year. The pilots are constant lit, including the stove. We have had the gas company out to check the stove and it is perfectly safe. UNLESS you leave the stove or burners on. Well when we got back from Thanksgiving on Sunday morning, after we got unpacked, I decided to do some dusting etc, since the house had been closed up. Well I did not realize that I bumped one of the burner knobs on the stove. It was the one for the oven and I bumped it over to "gas on". Well last night about 1:30pm our carbon monoxide detector went off. Luckily I woke up. I had a hard time waking up hubs!!! He was groggy, but he finally came around. My daughter woke up immediately. She sleeps with her door closed, which the fire department said is the reason she was not affected. The dogs were ok also, because I leave their door closed also. But if the detector had not gone off, they would have eventually been affected. I opened all the doors and windows and got everyone outside. Hubs checked the wall furnace, but it was off. I ran in the kitchen and checked the stove. I immediately noticed it was hot and that was when I saw the knob had been turned on. I turned it off and opened the kitchen window and put on the fan. We called the gas company and they came out immediately and also the fire department. They both said if we had not had a carbon monoxide detector we would have died!!!!! I cannot say it enough, please everyone buy a carbon monoxide detector for your homes. It saved our lives. Within less than an hour, our home was co free and we were cleared to go back in. I did not sleep the rest of the night. The co detector we have is both wired and battery back up. I am going to go over to Home Depot today on my lunch and kiss them. That is where we bought our detector. I am going to ask them to put up a huge sign reminding everyone to buy one.

Glad you are all OK, VG!!! Scary. We always keep a window or two cracked open in the tiny house, but we really should buy a carbon monoxide detector too. I'll mention this to Hubby.

Thank goodness you're all alright! :)

Here in NJ, when you sell a house, there must be smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide detectors, so this house has all of the above.

And my Dad had bought us a carbon monoxide detector for the old house.

Whew...You, and yours, have a lot to celebrate this season!

P.S. - Love the little poochie Avatar...is that your doggie?

Yes we are indeed lucky and I definately have something to be thankful for this holiday season! Chapter Two - yes that is my new rescue. He is approximately 4-5 years old. He only has the use of three of his legs. We thought we would have to have the 4th leg amputated, but luckily not right now. It is unusable, but he is not in any pain. He is a product of a Tijuana puppy mill. When he was xrayed he had multiple old injuries to his bad leg and he has issues with his others also, but luckily they do not bother him. He is the sweetest little guy. Gets around on three legs just fine. He came with the name of Papi, but when we found out he was so badly abused (we thought it might be a birth defect), we changed his name to Popeye. Sounds the same, but is a fresh new start for him.

vintage girl - lots of luck to you with your new little buddy, and kudos to you for taking him. My friend in PA has many pets and she often takes those with disabilities. For many years she had a cat who had been hit by a car and left on the side of the road. A rescue group found him and guided him through surgery - he was blind and a big part of his skull had been crushed, but he lived a happy life at my friend's home. It was amazing to see a blind cat jump from place to place...and walk along the headboard of the bed! His name was "Will", because he had the will to live. Anyway, I think Popeye is adorable! :)
(And shame on the puppy mills, everywhere!)

So thankful that you are okay and all is well.
We have them in our house. I have been in two fires as a child so fire protection and such has always been a big thing for me.
Everyone should take it seriously and install the detectors.
glad you reminded everyone.
And remember every time you change the clocks forward or back you change the batteries too.

Glad everything is ok. And yes, we have one, and 4 smoke detectors and one in the attic.
