View Full Version : Jet Crash in the Hudson River - NY/NJ
ChapterTwo

Has anyone heard about the jet crash that happened a bit before 4 PM (Eastern) today? There were approx. 146 passengers and 5 crew members and the plane went down due to a "bird strike" (they think, so far)...The pilot did an absolutely amazing job in guiding the plane into the Hudson River (I live about 4 miles from there!)...a short distance away and it would have hit buildings.
Anyway, I'm still crossing my fingers, but it seems that everyone got off safely, with no major injuries, thanks to ferry workers and other boaters helping them off the wings of the plane. That boggles my mind, and I hope and pray that it's true.
The plane is now just about totally submerged, and they will be attempting to drag it out of the water asap...meanwhile, the sun is setting on what is going to be one of the coldest days of the year here in NJ/NY!
Who said there are no miracles? ;)

Yes, Rosemary, I agree...Those people have the pilot to thank for saving their lives. On both sides of the river there are buildings...so he had to be extremely careful. There was even an infant onboard!
I heard and watched--- a miracle in front of us.

The worst injury was a woman with two broken legs. Whew!
I was living in DC when that plane crashed into the Potomac 27 years ago. And right before that, a commercial passenger plane went into the river here in Portland.
Scary stuff. I wonder what went through their minds.

Isn't that just the most amazing thing? God bless that pilot (AND all the passengers!)...he's fulfilled a huge purpose in his lifetime.
Oh, yes, Lisa - I hadn't thought about the plane in the Potomac which had a very different result...78 people died. I just researched an article on that and it happened on January 13th, and yesterday was the 15th!
I can't say that I remember the one in Portland, but I'm sure I knew about it at the time.
Lisa~ About the DC plane 27 years ago~ we live in the DC area, and I'll never forget that day. My husband travels that bridge everyday to and from work. I still see that poor young mother being saved, with a broken arm, in the fridge water knowing her new baby had not survived...and the frost on the survivors hair. An image I'll never forget...
Yes, it was a miracle what happened yesterday.

Oh, Gigi... What very different outcomes to the two crashes...so very tragic for those lost in D.C., and for their loved ones.
Hi ChapterTwo~
This may sound silly but to this day---if the shower is too cold~ I remember that imagine of that young mother in the freezing water with frost on her hair and broken arm...

No, Gigi...doesn't sound silly at all. It's because you're a caring, empathetic person. It tells a lot about you!:)

Good Morning Everyone, :)
I heard on the radio this morning that planes have some sort of safety device on them now. I couldn`t hear everything because the kids were talking. Another day of school being cancelled.
Any way, they rarely use this device, but this pilot was smart enough to remember to use it, and it kept the plane afloat longer than if he didn`t opt to use it. Thank God he did.
I also heard one passenger sustained two broken legs. No fatalities. The pilot did an awesome job, even the reporters had said so. Very scary.
Have a good day today.
Hugs,
Linda :)

Hi Linda,
What I heard was that the pilot had the presence of mind to close all the vents up front, thus not allowing water to come aboard the plane so easily. He sure had his wits about him, thank God!
Why are your kids off from school - cold weather or did you have snow? I'm in NJ and it's 9 degrees (noon). I'm sure you posted it somewhere, but I must have missed it.
My kids are teachers and Monday is a day off for Martin Luther King Day.

Hello Chapter Two, :)
This morning here in CT was ~14 degrees below zero. They couldn`t keep the school buses up and running. They also had problems with phone lines. First we got the automated message stating that there would be a 90~minute delay. Then about forty minutes later, we got another message stating that school would be closed.
Maybe that was what the pilot did. I know they said something about keeping it afloat, and a device that was installed and rarely used. Thankfully everyone survived.
Enjoy your day!
Hugs,
Linda :)

Linda - Sorry I never saw your note about your CT weather...14 degrees below zero is INSANE!!! You're not really that far from here but boy, we haven't had anything that bad. (But the winter is still young...UGH!)
May your temperatures be toastier...

Good Morning ChapterTwo, :)
That`s okay, I have missed posts myself. We had several miserably cold days. It has been around 20~25 degrees the last few days. Compared to the other days, we are having a tropical heat wave.
Come on Spring! :p
Enjoy your day my friend.
Hugs,
Linda :)

Hi Linda,
Now we're right on par...it's 23 here in NJ...at least it's sunshiny and not windy, which makes things better.
I'm so happy that the days are getting longer - it was still light at 5:15 the other day. Yippee! I'm with you...Come on SPRING!
Hugs to you too...

You might recall that I mentioned I live only a few miles from the Hudson River. Well, I received the following email from my friend, who lives a few blocks from here. I have a LOT of questions, so I emailed my friend back. I guess they took the wings off? I can't imagine how it got down the street, especially with that car parked on the side of the road...
Saturday afternoon the "Miracle on the Hudson" plane, flight 1549, was transported from NY to Teterboro Airport. It came through our town at about 4:30 pm, Saturday, 01/31/2009, and went right past our house. My daughter was the first to notice it and my son grabbed his camera and started snapping away when we saw the police escort come down the block to stop traffic on Route 46 west. He followed it to Teterboro but was stopped from going further at Industrial Avenue. He watched it get loaded onto a Boeing Beluga transport plane via remote controlled trailer. It was amazing!!!! I don't want to swamp everyone with photos, but here are two more...they obviously did have to take the wings off to transport it. Amazing to see that coming down the street of our little borough!
