View Full Version : I fixed the leaky faucet. Do I need a new/old sink?

My old plastic kitchen faucet was becoming an eyesore whose replacement handles kept coming off. When I had to go under the sink to turn off the hot water I knew it was time to look for a replacement. I like vintage looking stuff but a real vintage faucet didn't seem like such a hot idea so I spent two hours in my local home improvement store looking for a faucet. OK, so I looked at the kitchen sinks and countertops and cabinets. Looking for a kitchen faucet could have easily become a whole kitchen renovation, but the kitchen is not broke so I'm not replacing it yet, thought the little voice in my head is saying someday it will happen. Here is a picture of my old faucet:

I don't mind the stainless steel sink, but I remember this old sink with sideboard drainer that my grandmother had in her kitchen and I can't help thinking that would be cool. I also like the farmhouse sinks I've seen but sensibility tells me that ripping out the cabinets and countertop to fit such a sink might be pricey and over my head.
What do you think?

I love your new faucet! When I was growing up, we had an old sink with a drainboard. It seems like a waste of money to go out and buy a pricey new sink at this point; maybe you'll stumble across something both vintage and cheap one of these days on Craigslist or at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. But unless you have the extra money, I don't see any reason to worry about replacing the sink right now. It looks fine like it is.

I love your new faucet. I have almost the exact same one in my kitchen:D I had a farmhouse sink, but it was porcelain and had terrible scratches. Went to replace with a cast iron, but the one I bought off craigslist was too big and it got stuck in the granite countertop:eek: Luckily got it unstuck and found another one on CL that is a swanstone, double bowl white. The left side bowl is larger than the right side. It is very very light weight and durable. Will not scratch, stain, etc. I love it. I did love my single bowl farmhouse sink, but after living with it for a few years, found it is just not practical. I have a small kitchen and no room for a drain rack on the counter, so it was in my sink. Problem with a single bowl and having the drain rack in the sink, you cannot keep the sink or the drying dishes clean. Double bowl works out much much better:)

I love your new faucet set too. When we painted our kitchen countertops, that saved us so much money compared to replacing them that we were able to get a new sink. Here's the before & after:

It looks great, Carrie! I love that you said--since it's not broke, you won't replace it. That's smart thinking. But I know it's easy to want to do it, anyway.
I love the look of the farmhouse sinks, but I really need the double sink for my small kitchen. Mine is stainless like yours.

Thanks ladies. It looks like we have similar tastes. :)
I brought up the idea of a vintage sink and someone mentioned that they might not be practical. The paint chipped easily and if you dropped glass in them the glass broke because there was no flexibilty or bounce like stainless? Not sure if stainless really bounces but maybe it's a softer surface.
I guess it will be staying as it is for a long time, maybe closer to my retirement years. Hopefully thirty years from now?
I like what you did with your kitchen Bugalow. The counters and sink made a big difference.
Who needs granite and cast iron?
