View Full Version : Winter Wreaths

I have wreaths on both sides of my glass front doors and on the normal side door on the side of the house. I have no trouble decorating for most every season and holidays, but when Christmas is over, I have trouble figuring out what to decorate the wreaths with in January. It doesn't feel right to have flowers that don't grow in winter on the doors. I could do a heart themed wreath, but it's a little early for valentines. Does anyone else make wreaths? If so, what do you decorate them with in winter?
I guess I could always spray fake snow on a wreath and put pine cones around it, maybe some cardinals I saw in the floral section, and a red bow, and...maybe I just figured it out.
Got wreaths?

You know, Carrie, I was just thinking about the very same thing today. You might consider something simple like birds and berries...not necessarily even just cardinals. I used a lot of birds from Michael's on my Christmas tree this year, and they looked pretty nice. You can get them for not too much money, and they might look kind of cute wired into a twig wreath with a spray of berries and some white ribbon. Or you might be able to do a theme wreath of some kind. It might be kind of fun to suspend a cute tea cup from a ribbon to hang down into the center of the wreath and then decorate the wreath itself with tea strainers, spoons, tea tins, and stuff like that. Or make several different "purses" from different styles of craft paper and ribbon and glue them around the wreath. Hm...I'll have to give it some more thought. A wreath project would be fun!

Okay Shabby that tea cup one sounds wonderful..even the spoons..
Carrie - sounds like you have a plan.
If I had wreaths still up I'd do one with snowflakes on it..but I put all mine away.
I put up one of those grapevine cones and have pine branches and then some berry branches out the top of it. Just stuff from the yard. Of course it needs a bow but if it doesn't warm up then I don't care- not going out on the porch in the freezing cold to add it :)

I think berries might be nice. You could go with the darker sprigs of blue and purple berries if you wanted something a little different from the red holly look.

Indoors, you might try a kitchen herb wreath ... something like dried lavender and rosemary. This is not the time of year to try to make that sort of thing and let it dry, but you might be able to find something like lavender at a craft's store or on-line. Sometimes they sell the dried herb sachets. You could hang those as well.

... just an idea.

Everything tends to get kind of stark this time of year doesn't it? The light is a little harsher in January. Plus, it is colder. Also, after we put away the Christmas decorations that make the house festive, it is hard to figure out what to do isn't it?

I like the idea of a January wreath. :)

I was going to suggest the snowflakes too, maybe replace the ribbon with white or blue. I have a real wreath on my front door and like you, no idea what to do with it now. the ones over the windows just need to be taken down. Not all of my christmas stuff is down yet, don't want to freeze to my ladder. :o

Thanks for the ideas. Don't feel too bad if you still have some of your Christmas decor up outside. I drove buy a huge victorian today with all the lights, bows, ribons, and Santa animatronic waving from the front porch.
I wish I had my camera with me! It was really pretty, just unexpected. :D
I'd worry about the tea cup and the wind, but it sounds pretty. I have some real snow on the wreath now, it snowed about four inches. I like the birds and berries idea. Might have to run down to Trees and Trends and see what they have.
Thanks ladies.
