For some reason someone decided that putting a ceiling fan on my front porch was a good idea. I can tell you that I didn't do it! It's not that it looked bad, because at first I was charmed by the idea and look of it. It sounded and looked good in theory, but the reality is that it gets windy here and the blades got damaged. I had to take the blades off the fan yesterday, leaving nothing but the middle part of the fan. It looks horrible, so I went to a local store to buy a flush mount light. I though of buying a beautiful pendant light for a minute and then remembered the wind issue that damaged the fan would make the pendant swing. I brought this instead: http://shop.menards.com/shop/lighting-fans/outdoor-lights/ceiling/steel-outdoor-ceiling-light/p-62167.htm
Not expensive, but hopefully better suited to the outside area and wind resistant.I am patiently waiting for the rain to stop to install it.

Hello! I really like the light. I too have seen pics of porches with ceiling fans.

Carrie,

That's a really nice light. I've seen magazine pics with front porch ceiling fans and wondered how their inner workings fared in bad weather. Evidently not too well.

We have ceiling fans on both porches. They fare well but you have to be smart enough to by a fan for outdoor spaces. They have all their mechanics enclosed so the elements do not bother them.
We love it- it keeps the air moving on balmy days and evenings and a better advantage is that they keep mosquitos away when moving. Misquitos do not like moving air..

We have wind also but most outdoor celing fans have a arm then hang on with a socket like a knee. ball and socket so they move with the wind.

So, if anyone wants one just make sure you buy them for outdoor situations..there is a difference.

Pretty light:) I also have ceiling fans outdoors. We made the mistake of buying one that was indoor the first time around. The blades warped and it did not do well at all. The outdoor ones are a bit more expensive, but well worth it. I also love the breeze it creates and yes it definately does help with the mosquitoes:)

The new light is up on deck. At first I was surprised that despite it being pretty that it looked strange to me, like it wasn't quite in charecter with the front of the house. It's growing on me gradually? I need to give it time.

I think it is very pretty. You might just be used to seeing the ceiling fan there.:)

You are probably right, Vintage Girl. I got a shock seeing it when I was driving into the driveway. What surprises me more is seeing the ceiling where the fan was. I need to clean it.

I didn't stop at the porch light. I changed out three lights. I put a new light over my farm table and reused a light I had taken down in a bedroom to put over the sink and I put some medallions around the base of the lights. The lights were on my list of things to upgrade on this house. Little steps.

Very pretty light! I also have medallions for all my lights and ceiling fans. They are so pretty and look so pretty against the ceiling.
