I was reading the new Sunset magazine, and they had an article about community land trust programs where you buy the house but lease the land it's on. It's supposed to make the home more affordable for people who couldn't normally afford one. At least in the neighborhood I was reading about, the owners had to earn under a certain amount of money, though they also had to be able to qualify for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. The homes in this particular neighborhood were also built to be energy-efficient. It sounds like an interesting concept. It turns out CLTs are all over the US, though this is the first time I've ever heard of them. I wish I'd known about them when I was looking to buy.
