View Full Version : Does your home have a name?
I thought this thread was fun over at CL...so I'll start it here... :)
Our new little waterfront home has been named:
Maple Creek Cottage
Why? It has a beautiful old maple tree overlooking a creek (that goes to the bay- dumps in the Altantic Ocean) and we hope to give the property/home a more cottage look...
Anyone else?

My husband named our lake house "Swimmingly".
Lisa~ I like the sound of that~ Swimmingly~ enchanting...
How is the lake house coming along? I swear I saw pics of it somewhere around here...and went back and couldn't find it.
My blog is "Cottage of Stone."
But I suppose "The Francis Xavier Jardon House" would be more historical... but it is too much to type out!

We named ours Galway Cottage.
Very charming names...
Stone Cottage- I saw a picture of it and visited your blog...I went to go back and can't locate it... would love to visit again :)
Galway Cottage- Is this a family name, history behind it????
Sand Dune---sounds like a warm toasty cream color- is it? We decided to paint all the molding in our newest home- white- not a pure white- I think it's called Westland white from Sherwin Williams....

I call my house "Waterhouse" after the Victorian Pre-Raphaelite painter of the same name. I have a lot of prints of his work hanging.
I have also had plumbing problems. :)

Briar Rose Cottage, because of all the roses I have along the fence. Reminds me of the scene in the Disney movie where the prince must slash his way thru all the roses to get to the castle. :p That and I love the name Briar Rose. Roses seem to have taken over my life aorund there. My dd's middle name is Rose, the paint color in the kitchen is Rose, rose bushes/shrubs everywhere......:o

We named our house "Stone Cottage" ~ it's made of stone plus it's our surname. I also refer to the house as "the little rock bungalow":)

Yes, Gigi, it is a warm beige, and it's also by Sherwin Williams (as is the Java brown). The house painter came to me with a huge color wheel...I started out thinking I'd repaint the house barn red with white trim, but then decided to go back to its "roots". When we bought it from my uncle in 1978, it was brown - it had cedar shakes which had darkened over time.
A BIG WOW to so many neat meaningful names...
Jenn- Waterhouse- That is very cool that you have paintings of such....
Briar Rose Cottage- Gosh I really like the sound of this--at our beach house I want to make my bedroom all white with touches of roses, lavender and sky blue...
Oh Memmey--you are such a character I LOVE the name and of course I love your RED cottage and it was fun watching it unfold into this...
Little Rock Bungalow- Very neat--I love bungalow anything!!!
ChapterTwo- We have found we really love Sherwin Williams paint- it goes on well and seems to dry fast...
I hope to see pics of everyone's places....
And oh Puck~ Thank you for providing the link again---what a fun place to visit. I like the idea of your candy colored kitchen---pictures please!!! I love those colors....

Gigi - I agree that Sherwin Williams paint is good!
On the flip side of the coin...I bought some Rustoleum for my back storm door - it was a dark brown but when I opened it, it was lavender on top! I know that sometimes the pigment separates, so I stirred and stirred like crazy...then stirred some more. Eventually it got brown looking, but I could always see a hint of purple in it! And I had to keep painting fast...if the paint sat even for a couple minutes, the lavender would start to appear on top again. Weird stuff...and I've used Rustoleum for YEARS.
Hi ChapterTwo---That really is a bit strange- I'm wondering if the paint froze--but hey that type of paint should be able to take all weather...

I did the painting in mid to late August but, you never know. I had purchased the paint in Lowe's. Now that we're talking about it, I did save the can and wanted to call the company about it. I'll add that to my "to do" list. ;)

I was told by painters that paint must not stand in the cold - to store it inside not outside so maybe it did freeze.

Breezy - The only thing about the paint was that I bought it in August and used it right away - bought it at Lowe's (or Home Depot...not sure - they're next to each other!). I wouldn't think there would have been a chance for it to freeze anytime.

My alternate name was something like "house tornado dropped shed on".:p It didn't sound very lyrical or fanciful so the Briar Rose Cottage won out.
In case some of you aren't aware of it, the Wizard of Oz seems to creep up ocassionally in here. Rubyslippers, my house that I swear looks like a tornado came thru and dropped a shed thru my roof making a second story. I think we had some other things related to Dorothy and her friends....:)

Our home is still consumed by English Ivy; however, we haven't lived here in the spring ... so, while I can identify dogwood trees, some old iris bulb clippings, maybe a crepe myrtle, etc. ... I wanted to wait to name the house for a couple of reasons: a) I don't know what blooms in springtime b) My house is painted beige/khaki ... at first I did not like it at all ... however, I think it will look very woodland-ish-y when everything blooms - - listening to all of your home names, it sounds like many were chosen based on the exterior color/paint/brick/stone of your home and/or the vegetation/location roses/waterfront/maple tree ... so, we are in "wait-and-see-mode" right now. If it gets close this spring, I'll call a vote! In the interim, we say "Bye little house" when we leave and "Hello little house" when we get home. I think it is the equivalent of giving a little cat milk before you decide if you are keeping it and always say "Hello sweet kitty" - - aren't you cute "sweet kitty" - - it doesn't stick as a name, but it is a temporary term of endearment.
I loved this thread over at CL too - - thanks for starting it again.
Rubyslippers- It will be fun to see what name you come up with...;) Not that any home has to have a name~ it just seems so "cottagey" (is that a word?)...

This English teacher officially says "bippity-boppity-boo" - - cottagey is now an official word - - I also like cottagization - - the act of cottagizing a condo / ranch / pre-fab / retro-flat-apartment / duplex (any of this sounding familiar to my moving past) - - go forth and be cottagey-cottagizing women practicing cottagization around the country.
Also, yes Gigi, I think it needs a name. We're just not there yet so-to-speak.
Of course, I'll keep all of you posted.

Regarding making a home "cottagey"...
I once saw a segment on TV shot in NYC. The apartment was in mid-Manhattan and the building, itself, was rather contemporary.
However - once you flung open the door, you would swear you were inside a cottage! Floral slipcovers, white painted furniture - all classic cottage! From that moment, I truly realized that cottage is a state of mind and anything can be cottagized! (A nod and a wink to rubyslippers...;))

Thanks for the commments! I'm not quite happy with either, though. I always want both words to start with the same sound (I forget what that's called :o) like "Coneflower Cottage" or "Gardenia Grove". Maybe I'm just a little corny! Oooo, maybe "Sycamore Sanctuary"? Hmm, not so sure about that one. "Daffodil Dell"? "Dancing Daffodil Cottage"? (That one almost works) Oh, I like "Cottonwood Cottage", but we don't have any cottonwoods. Our house isn't really a cottage or bungalow, but maybe . . . Any ideas, ladies?

Daffodil, our place isn't a cottage architecturally either. But I like to call it that since it's what we're turning it into on the inside anyway. I named ours Twice Remembered - (The Twice Remembered Cottage). One other family lived here and raised their family here before us, thus two sets of remembrances from one home.
Here's an idea...The Daffodil Dream Cottage :)
Well, all these names are pretty nice and creative. I don't live in a cottage per say, but I'm doing my darndest to make it more cottagey! I have thought about a name for my house since i read this subject over at CL but it was a no go.
2 that came to mind were: Tanglewood Cottage - I'm on the edge of the woods and it's nothing but vines and undergrowth in there...
the other was Pinecone Cottage since the few dozen pine trees we have drop pinecones all over our yard, house, etc.
That's about it for my creativity with cottage names. ;)

We have to put on our thinking caps and try to come up with a good name for your cottage!

03-25-2009, 06:51 PM
Yup, a name like Gardenia Grove or a phrase like bippity-boppity-boo or sally-sells-seashells is alliteration. I really like Gardenia Grove (assuming you have Gardenias) ... also, I like the story behind twice remembered ... that is incredibly cool.
I have been working on the name thing for our house. Other than the ivy, both iris bulbs and dogwoods seem to prevalent around the property. One could also say there is a plethora of yard art; however, I'm not sure I want that to inspire the name. (No flamingos - - more like little faces hanging in the trees and some extra bird baths.)
Anyway, we do have a tree growing through our porch; also, as the leaves start branching out, all of the trees are becoming more prevalent. In a text message the other day I mentioned that I was on my way home to my tree house. It isn't as cute as Gardenia Grove, but I'm trying it on for size.

How about Dorothy's Tree House or Toto's Tree House. To refer to both your love for the Wizard of Oz and to refer to the trees. Or you could get tongue in cheek and call it Dogwood Cottage. ;)
Right now our beach home is named Maple Creek Cottage...but I was thinking--well I really would like your opinion about naming it: Studio 5144
I know that a strange twist, but I'm thinking in the terms of the garage we are changing into a working studio for my small craft biz... So Maple Creek Cottage or Studio 5144? What do ya think???
OR could I go with... Visit Studio 5144 at Maple Creek Cottage--???

Cohen, :)
LOL LOL Somebody has to take the first step in gentrification and I say name it. Yes Mam, name your house, I sure would. THEY have nothing to do with you and yours.
I remember a neighborhood that had fallen on poor times and people started moving in a turning it around and it was so nice. The older two stories got new paint and lots of refurbishing and the riff raff gradually slinked off.
I think fresh paint and flowers is repellent to the seamier crowd they usually operate in the corners in the dark. LOL
What are you gonna call it ???:)

How about Dog Palace in the Red Light District? :p I think in your case there should be some sort of reference to the dogs, not so sure about the prostitutes though. ;)
Gigi, I like the Maple Creek name and also the Studio @ idea too. But not the Studio 5144 by itself. It sounds too New York Studio ??, hard and shiny like chrome. Since you are doing the soaps you'd want something more homey.JMHO:)

Wow- thank you everyone for your insight-advice. I kinda like our property to be Maple Creek (Cottage)- with a working studio.
Now for Cohencottage-ummm well... with a diverse neighborhood ;)...let's be careful that people do NOT "read" the name for the wrong reason....you may NOT want people knockin' at your door :D

Hubs and I have been thinking of naming our house for quite some time. I lived in Europe for many years and was born in England, where everyone names their homes. Several names have crossed our minds, but have not come up with one yet. We do bird rescue and our house used to be an egg ranch, so something along that avenue would be good. I am partial to "Flight of Fancy Ranch", but hubs feels that is too feminine. We also do dog rescue and have a star theme on the outside of our house. We have red traditional shutters, but where we had to order special sizes, I used large red metal stars instead, so maybe something with stars in the name would be good. Maybe "Winged Star Ranch"???? We also have a wedding/funeral dove release business and it is called "Wing and a Prayer", but I think I want something different for our house name. Any and all suggestions would be welcomed. Once we decide on a name, I will make a sign and hang it.

Good lord girl that is alot of different roads! :D I like the wings part since it could refer to both the birds and perhaps the doggie "angels". I think narrowing it down to something to do with rescues would be good. Maybe do a word association when you think of rescue- second chance, shelter, umm how about Dogwood Nest Place? Going to the Birds? :p

All these names sound so cozy! My house has yet to be named, but I also have a barn in the back (despite the miniscule property), so I'm not sure if I should name them separately or together. We've been unofficially calling the barn "The Speakeasy" because, although it is definitely older than the house, the house was built in the 20s and the two-story barn would have been a perfect underground jazz bar!

We live in a bit of a historic area, Norris, TN. This was a community entirely built by TVA in the early 30's, in preparation for the construction of the first of the TVA dam's. Many of the folks associates with that major project came here and then stayed once the work was done. So, many of the homes are known locally by the name of the original occupants. Our house is known as the Shultz house, as that family moved here in 1934 and occupied the house continually until 2008 when we bought it from the estate. There is a move to formally name the remaining original Norris homes in this manner in honor of those who came before, lived their lives, and left their legecy. I think that's a pretty neat idea.
