Ok, I may have posted this before, but I can't remember and I still can't find what I want.

We have a small guest room that's now going to do double duty as a nursery. I want to have a bed that is big enough for guests, but that doesn't take over the whole room. I want a daybed that is upholstered (or just plain with no frame) with a trundle bed that pops up to be level with the daybed mattress. So, it would be a twin bed for day to day, and then it could be a king when we pop the trundle up. Is this available anywhere? I've been looking online for MONTHS, and none of my local furniture stores have them. I'm starting to think they don't exist, but I know people that have them (with ugly frames).

Help please!!! Here is a link to the look I'm going for, but at this point I would settle for a metal frame and just make bolster pillows for the daybed.

Are you going to slipcover the bed then? I was just thinking about all that upholstery around kids..... I like it though, very classy!

If I can find something like that bed in Ballard, then I would definitely go for a slipcover option. Pretty much everything we have is slipcovered anyway because of the dogs. Decorating for kid wear and tear should be pretty similar, right? I was also thinking that indoor/outdoor fabric like sunbrella would be another option. That Ballard Designs bed comes in some Sunbrella fabrics, but unfortunately the trundle just pulls out and doesn't pop up.

Here is one that does not have a back headboard. It is also in a pretty cottage style and not really outrageously expensive:

Oh I just realized that that bed does not pop up either, just sits next to the other upper bed. The other option wuold be a futon bed, but they only fold out to a double bed. Here are some:)

Ok, just found what may work for you. It is basically frameless, so you could do whatever you want with it. Pretty bolsters, etc.

Okay walmart sells a pop up trundle- here is the link

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pop-Up-Trundle/10982301?wmlspartner=GPA&sourceid=44444444440190230080

So basically you need to find a twim bed that will accomodate that underneath it..

Here is a daybed with a pop up trundle

you probably aren't going to be able to get a slipcoverd/upholstered bed to accomodate a pop up underneath as all that fabric would make it hard to move the trundle in and out..but I'll keep looking

Thanks!! You ladies are fantastic! One of my friends has those Ballard beds in her store, so I'm going to go measure the underneath area tomorrow to see if that walmart pop up would fit. I like that frameless option too Vintage Girl!

The other thing I was considering was leaving our current full sized mattress in there and putting it on a storage bed under the window. It would be like a really deep daybed. What do y'all think would be better? The room is pretty small, so I was thinking the twin option would leave us more floor space everyday.

I'm not sure I'm following you on that last one, CC.
Are you talking about a full size vs. a twin size?

Yes, the true daybed would be a twin normally, and then if we had company we could pop the trundle up to make the bed a king. The second option would be to do a full bed sideways under the window with bolster pillows so it would be a really big daybed and 2 people could still sleep in it. I'll go take a picture of the room so you can see it...

I'd say you would get more use out of a twin daybed with pop up as it will leave more room. Remember this is a nursery also and you don't want to be so cramped you can't get around carrying a baby. Also a full size large daybed would be uncomfortable to sit at - you'd have bolster pillows but you'd have to scoot so far back to lean against anything and then your feet would be dangling.
I'd say go for a twin daybed with a popup..
The baby will grow to crawling age quicker than you can imagine and it would be nice to have floor space for him or her to play in their nursery.

(did she go and take a pic???)

Ok, here are pics of the room...I just turned in a circle so you get a panoramic view. Please excuse the mess.

The unfinished cabinets are going to be painted and installed on either side of the window with a shelf above. The yellow cabinet will probably house clothes or linens, and the crib will hold the baby :)

The room measures a little over 10' x 11'. The full bed would stick out about 4 1/2 feet from the window, and a daybed would stick out about 3 1/2 feet.

Another question I have is where would you put the crib and yellow cabinet? Centered on the wall opposite the window (between the closet door and door to the room), on the far wall to the right of the window, or on the near wall left of the window (it would be right in front of the door to the room)?

Here is another option. I used to have one of these in my spare room. It was great. I just slide items over when I opened it up for company. I ended up selling it after my sister came and "visited" for three months:eek: They are an equivalent of a murphy bed:

Here is the URL for more info:

They have all different styles and colors of wood:)

OK I would put the crib directly across from the door so you can get to it in the dark and away from the windows in case some kid throws a rock though it and in case there is a draft and so they can't reach any blind/curtains cord. That's my 2 cents.

CC -
first question is how often do you plan on having overnight guests? The twin which will fold out to be larger than a queen (I think) but only take up floor space of a twin is the better choice.

My granddaughter has the trundle that comes up to the twin size mattress she has to become one large bed when needed - great when her aunt and uncle (my son and his wife) come and stay and when I am there, I sleep on the one of the two "twins". My daughter has a double bed in the guest room - far too small for my 6' 1" husband to share with me since we have a queen and he manages to sleep in over half of that!

Honestly CD, we don't have overnight guests very often (except for my mother). So, I agree with y'all that a twin with trundle would be a better option because it takes up less floor space. I hadn't considered how much it stinks to sleep in a full bed with another person if you used to a big bed. We had to do that at my SIL/BIL's and it was pretty uncomfortable and DH and I are both fairly short.

I like also an indoor/outdoor fabric like sunbrella I think would be another option.

Yes, Heather. The Ballard bed is a twin, but it would become a king with the trundle out. Our bed we already have in there is a full sized one. I would just position it sideways under the window and set it up like a daybed. Does that make sense?

I'd stick w/ a daybed-trundle option. You can layer it w/ lots of big pillows for seating during the day.

Hey CC when I was at Ikea I saw the single bed with the trundle that pops up so it makes a queen - we thought of you (hubby and I were jumping up and down on the bed in the showroom while Junior was downstairs in the kiddy room - we didn't know they had a free babysitting service at Ikea!). Anyhoo, here it is in dark wood but the one we were jumping on was white (cream) and that would go with your nursery colours!

Hmm Heather- wonder what the sales reps were thinking when you two were jumping all over the bed-

" wow that is one wild couple.." :)

Thanks Heather! Did it seem sturdy with all that jumping? I'll have to check it out when we go to Atlanta on Friday.

Thanks Heather! Did it seem sturdy with all that jumping?

I think you'd better let your hubby do any jumping! ;)
