Why is it that I'm still battling the greys when I use a PERMANENT hair colour every 6 weeks?
Anybody else have a rant today?

Is it your roots or is your color fading everywhere? That would drive me nuts!
My rant is why are maternity tops and dresses so frigging ugly?! I'm trying to find a dress for a wedding in July, and the ones out there are terrible.

Oh too bad, CC. There are actually some nice maternity stores here. Have you looked online? By the way - have you told your family & friends yet?
With me it's the roots - GREY CITY. I use the root touch up kit too and that works because it's only 10 minutes. Every other one I use an all over kit and I think I've used every brand out there. It's not permanent like they say!

Yes, I've been looking online, but dress shopping is really frustrating. I don't want to look like a flowered whale! We told some friends and family awhile ago, but I got "outed" on facebook last night. Today is 13 weeks, so I'm pretty well out of the woods as far as risk of miscarriage goes.
My mom told me to wait to do permanent color as long as possible b/c it was such a pain. Right now, glazes cover all my grays, and I hope it stays that way for awhile!

Oh, also - what about consignment shops? Usually maternity clothes are worn for a few months at most so they are in great shape.
What glaze do you use for your greys? I haven't done that...

I get it done at the salon, but sometimes my friend that works there brings samples home and does it for me. Memmey may be able to give you some recommendations. I think it doesn't work as well as permanent on grays b/c they are resistant to the color, but right now it still works for me.

I gave up the grey battle last year. I am lucky that I did not start getting any grey until I was over 50. Now I wear my hair very short and just let it all blend in:D My rant for the day would be waiting in line at Starbucks at 5:35am and some little blondie 20 something can't figure out what foo foo drink she wants. Hello, it's a coffee shop, get caffeine like the rest of us, get out of my way, and let me get to work:mad: I just told her to pick something. She responded that she wanted to make sure that whatever she got was not "too fattening". I said it didn't really matter because in 30 years that drink would end up on her ass anyway:p

Vintage girl-LOL.
My rant today is I have a stiff neck and its killing me.:(
Not ready to give in to the greys yet. Will fight them off till the bitter end.
CC, in my day, maternity clothes were hideous tents with big ol' bows. I thought they had made some strides in making them more attractive. Good luck finding a dress, consignment shops is a great idea!

My rant- I am SICK of vomiting kids- do you hear me sick of it. If I dont' have to see a bucket of puke it will be awesome.
Okay I feel a bit better now back to work for me.
Grey hair- oh yeah my daughter likes to play hairdresser so she was brushing my hair yesterday and said wow you have lots of grey hair. I replied yes I do and comments like that just cause more. haha

Re hair...I've used Nice 'n Easy forever...
I like the way it sort of blends a couple shades. But for the fun (?) of it, I tried the "Perfect 10" color, also made by Clairol. After two weeks, it's like the color on the roots is fading...and I left it on for 10 (resistant) instead of 5minutes.
Back to Nice 'n Easy I go...
As for maternity clothes, I used to love a little store at the mall called, "MotherCare". I see there is still a website, and you can purchase from there (England), but they no longer have U.S. stores. That's where I got my special occasion dresses, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. ;)
I'm from a different era, but I don't get the idea of the tight dresses and tops that pregnant women wear now. I didn't have those fussy, frilly things of a long time ago, but my clothes were a bit more roomy and comfy. I don't like tight fitting things even now. Just me, I guess...

I think Tammy wins for most serious thing to rant about. Puke was the reason I always said I wouldn't have kids. That will be hubby's job for sure. Or I'm sending them to you in NC.

Hey CC- it totally is hubby's job unfortunately he is gone so it is mine. I remember the last time he was gone we got serious flu stuff and Jack - the one that is sick now was in my bathroom throwing up so badly. He was crying and just kept saying I want daddy. I need daddy. Do you know it was 2 in the morning and I made someone in Iraq get my hubby up so he could talk him through the next 30 minutes. He really needed and I couldn't give him what he needed.
I have unfortunately learned and am now able to handle it. I will say I am getting better at it as I only had gag reflex twice today but never lost it..
woo hoo
Here is to a better Thursday- with no vomit :)
Oh and you can send me a baby anytime you want to :)

I'm so sorry you are having to do that all by yourself Tammy! Hubs and I both had that virus a couple of months ago, and it was terrible. He had it worse than me. I only threw up for about 12 hours, but it took a few days to feel normal again. Hope you stay well!
Rant here: Not finding the "root touch up package" for the hair color used

Vintage Girl - you made me laugh too!
Memmey - I've got brown hair. I dye it darker brown in the winter and lighter brown in the summer. I buy whatever is on sale. I must continue to dye my hair until while my son is in Elementary School (and he's not even in kindy yet) I've seen the other Moms with children my age and I MUST LOOK YOUNGER THAN I AM. Sorry to shout.
C2 - that's what I used Perfect 10 and it didn't get all the greys out! They are still there!
Tammy - you phoned Iraq? Kinda reminds me of a story... later though.
CC - I even shopped at Old Navy as their maternity clothes were cute.

Heather, I can really understand how it is to be a little more (ahem) "mature" than the other moms. I'm sure you look great! Attitude is everything...
I did call Clairol to tell them about what happened with the Perfect 10...they didn't even offer a coupon towards another product. He just said that, from what I told him, my grays are too resistant and I need to use a regular colorant like Nice 'n Easy.
I SO feel like ditching the coloring but I just don't feel ready to be gray. :(

I have always felt that you are as young as you "feel", and the younger you feel, the younger you "appear". It is a state of mind. I did not have my daughter until I was in my 30's and she is now 20 years old. I was always older than the other moms, and still am. But heck I am closer than they are to retirement, I will get the senior discount sooner, and I can eat dinner at 3pm and nobody will think that is weird:D I have always felt that aging is something to enjoy and embrace. Every grey hair, wrinkle, and yes SAG:eek: is a part of us. It is the experience of life. Embrace it, live it, love it and it will reflect in your soul.

Well put Vintage girl. I have been at both ends of the spectrum. I had my first when I was 25 then the second at 29. So, I was pretty much the same age as most of the other military moms. But the last two - well I am more their grandma :) I had the last one when I was 39 had to do it before 40.
She asked me yesterday why I dont' wear makeup like all the other moms in her class. I guess I looked sad when she asked because she started to cry and said- you don't have to - you are pretty.
I did the whole makeup, hair and pretty clothes all the time before. Now I just want to be able to dig in dirt on the drop of a hat, be comfortable and messy whenever. I don't want to spend so much time on hair. I hate hairspray and makeup always bothered my skin so now I am older and don't seem to give a damn.
But for a little girl I guess it does mean something. So, for her I will take time to do it occasionally. Dang.

I was thinking along these lines today...I wonder if any of you feel like your "feminine side" has sort of gotten hidden over the years? Just like many of you, I'm always wielding some sort of tool or paintbrush and I am wearing jeans more often than anything else. My hands feel like they belong on a man!
Believe me, I love working on my house, but sometimes I remember how nice it felt to wear pretty clothes and feel more like a female, and I miss that. :o

i like to get dirty and messy and play outside, but i also like to dress cute and have good hair. personally, i think it's good to have a balance. also, i try to dress nicely, have good hair, etc. to make me feel good about myself, rather than b/c that's how i feel like i should look or b/c someone tells me too.

You nailed it CC about balance. It's like I want to be able to tackle anything but look half decent doing it.
Chapter Two you have to get out girl and buy yourself something pretty, ok? Get dressed up and hit the supermarket (or wherever). Why not, eh?
Tammy why not a new hair-do or something? How long have you had your hair that way? I'm not saying by any means you NEED a haircut - I think you look just fine girl - I'm just saying if you want to change things up a bit and not do the makeup thing then go for the hair thing. Oh, I hope you don't think I'm being nasty....
yarborough house
03-12-2010, 04:51 AM
OH heather you could never be nasty. :)
My hair does change - that is one thing that has not change throughout life. Growing up my dad did not let us girls cut our hair - so we were the brady girls..but once I hit college ahhh the fun, the colors, the perms, the cuts.
Basically now I have very wavy hair when it is shorter- it got wavier and wavier with each kid.(and grayer:).
So when I do cut it short it needs to be tamed a bit so it takes some blowdryer action and some product. Which I don't mind then I get bored and let it start to grow out till it hits a bob..then I get the itch to cut again.
I will probably get it done again soon- gotta find the time.
Makeup is a hard one though. I am allergic to most things that touch the skin or very sensitive to say the least. My eyes especially- I remember wearing mascara and after about 3 hours I was clawing my eyes off.
Clinique was the only stuff that didn't bother me as much. I think the thing with makeup is that my mom never wore any so I never learned how to do it properly. Then in college we did it to go out and that is not everyday makeup..I don't know how to do makeup for just the general day..it always looks like I am on the prowl when I do it :) haha and I am too old to prowl.
And clothing- well being overweight - nothing looks good so why buy it.

I love love love my hair extra short. I used to have hair down below my waist, but got sick of the upkeep and have had it extremely short and spiked for years. I indulge with my hair and get it cut every two weeks. I have never wore makeup, but I do wear glasses and defiantely indulge in that area. I buy expensive high end glasses, and consider them my "makeup". Right now I have animal print Dolce Gabbani glasses. I love them. I also love jewelery. I have gobs of silver and turquoise and love to wear it all at once:D Clothes I love also, and I am not a little woman by any means, but even being "fluffy", I still consider myself trendy. I do live in jeans, but have a zillion tops, sweaters and jean jackets. Even though I embrace growing old, I like to be cute in my old age;) I will be the 90 year old wearing gobs of bracelets, animal print tops, jeans, boots ,jean jacket with vintage pins, long dangly earrings in my ears, and always always a big silver necklace. Wear what makes you happy, find your self-confidence and you will be beautiful;)

HAHAAH LOLOL I love this conversation.:D:D
Ok the hair.....grey hair needs at least 30 minutes on the roots. Make sure you shampoo your hair and scrub around the hair line to get any face cream off before you color. You don't have to do it the very day you color but be sure you do it so you don't have cream residue at the roots by your face.
The perfect brown...If you want pretty medium brown hair then mix 3/4 medium golden brown and 1/3 light brown. Buy two boxes of color and tighten the bottles back and save the extra. You see grey acts a blue when you chose your color, if you chose an ash brown because you don't want as much red then your grey is blue and the ash color is a grey or blue soooo you have too much ash and your hair looks sooty. The brown is not vibrant.
On the color wheel the opposite of yellow is violet, orange is opposite blue so you see you can adjust your shade to make it much more expensive looking than just .....brown.
I am an older hairdresser and frankly weary of re-inventing myself. I can not really sell color if my hair is grey so still I trudge on coloring it. I have to wear make-up and I found that the Bare Minerals make up works great. It's like not having any on. Look I'm no beauty queen and I think nothing looks worse than makeup greased wrinkles. Lo'real makes a mineral make-up also. It is fast , pretty and sheer. I used it also.
I just want to be young again ...oh and I want to be clueless again too....what a wonderful time that was.I didn't know that I didn't know.;)

I love you ladies!
You just have to be comfortable in your own skin.Your beauty will shine from within. I'm comfortable, but I like to enhance what I got, while I still got it!
For me, I thought of going grey for about a nano second. I'm so not ready.
I get my nails done twice a month, it doesn't stop me from digging in the dirt or painting without gloves on. I wear makeup for me. I like my jewelry, nothing fancy, just depends on the mood, either classic pearl studs or big, bold and chunky.
I want to dress age appropriate but still be current. I love my jeans.
Vintage girl said it well:
It is the experience of life. Embrace it, live it, love it and it will reflect in your soul.

I rarely wear makeup. I gave it up years ago so I could sleep later. I'm lucky to have pretty good skin even for a 54-year-old, so I don't worry too much about it. I am comfortable being seen without it, and really, working with a bunch of 13-year-olds, do I care? Not much. I am also not much into dressing up. I'd rather be comfortable. I very occasionally wear a dress or nice pair of pants to work, but most of the time I'm in jeans and tennis shoes. I am on my feet nearly constantly at work and do not want to try to teach when I'm in agony, so I dress comfortably. I wear cute t-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, or blouses to work with vests, jackets, or sweaters over them, but on weekends I get into a big, comfy t-shirt. I want to be valued for being intelligent, funny, and good at my job, not for the way I look.
I have my finger and toe nails done once a month, maybe twice if I can afford it. I like the fact that it keeps the skin on my hands and feet smooth and cleaned up. I am very lucky to have very little gray hair even at my advanced age. I get a foil every few months. There is no way in hell I'd ever try to do my own color again....when I was younger and colored it myself, I nearly ruined it. Some things are best left to professionals.
My one big wish in life is to have enough money for a thigh-ectomy so that pants that fit around my waist would also fit around my thunder thighs. If I could lose my saddlebags, I'd be a happy camper.
