Tonight a Corelle cereal bowl fell off the counter onto the throw rug in front of the sink. That thing shattered into about 300 pieces, not exaggerating, there were oodles of slivers of Corelle on the floor. This has happened before, but I always thought Corelle was shatterproof (for some reason), and this is not the first time something broke to smithereens when it fell.

Marie, I'm so glad you weren't hurt! I used to think they were shatterproof, too, but I've since learned that they are dangerous--which is why I got rid of all of mine. If pets, or worse, a baby or toddler was on the floor, they could be injured horribly:eek:.

I read one report about the dishes that told about shards sticking into the legs of a table.

I'm now re-thinking purchasing Corelle dishes! I too thought they were made "not" to break! Glad you weren't cut, and clean up was easy :o

It was unreal how they broke into tiny little pieces. If one of my dogs would have been near, oh no. I don't think I will be purchasing anymore. They even fell on a rug.

Hi Mac! I'm really glad you brought this to our attention- I too really thought they were the dishes that "wouldn't" break- at least I remember growing up hearing this over and over!

I broke one years ago and was stunned at how it broke into a million pieces. Three months after I broke it, I was still finding little shards of it that flew all the way from the kitchen into my livingroom. I quit buying them after that! Mine also fell on a rug and not the floor:eek:

Doing it right now.:)

This is what I wrote:

Very Concerned.
Last night a Corelle cereal bowl fell off of the kitchen counter onto a throw rug that was on the floor. That bowl shattered into hundreds of little pieces, almost like shrapnel. I always understood that Corelle was "Chip and break resistance"

If my dogs would of been in my kitchen at the time it shattered, there certainly would of been injuries and a trip to the veterinarian. The pieces shattered all over the kitchen floor. I found pieces/shards several feet away.

I am very concerned, as I use these dishes for my daycare children, and if this were to happen in the kitchen with them in the room, that could be tragic.

Please explain to me exactly what you mean by "Chip and Break Resistant" and if this is typically what happens when a piece of the dishware falls onto a rug. I can't imagine what would of happened it it would of fallen on the laminate floor without the rug to cushion it, my guess is I would have had slivers everywhere including adjoining rooms.

Sincerely,

Marie,

I googled correlle dish complaints and you cannot believe what I found:eek:
Apparently the dishes exploding is very very common. Since they are made of tempered glass, they will shatter due to temperature changes also. After mine exploded, I got rid of the dishes. I would seriously consider getting rid of yours. Here is what I found:

Corelle is a Pyrex product, and there have been a rash of complaints against Pyrex because its glass products break unexpectedly. Here is a pretty well-reasoned analysis of the situation (sort of generic Pyrex-related) that might interest you:

I will share that I had a pan lid that shattered on me once. It had been stored in an unheated cupboard, and when I took it out and sat it on top of the counter in much warmer air, it shattered. It was the strangest thing I've ever seen!

Thanks for the links ladies. Very interesting. I will be looking for new dishes and I will never buy Corelle again.

My Reply from Corelle.

Thank you for contacting World Kitchen LLC.

Although Corelle is made of an extremely durable glass called Vitrelle, known for its strength, it is not completely shatter/break proof. We do offer a 3 year warranty against breakage, chipping, and staining under normal household use. This warranty does not include any breakage from dropping since that is not considered normal household use.

As a one time goodwill gesture, we would be happy to send you a replacement bowl. Please tell us the name of your pattern and the size of the damaged bowl.

Once we receive this information we can better assist you.

For further assistance, please contact our Consumer Care Center at 800-999-3436. Representatives are available from 8am to 6pm, EST, Monday through Thursday and 8am to 5pm on Friday, and will be more than happy to assist you.
