I love watching the birds come around. I put out birdfood, and the darn grackles eat it up within a few hours. I took down the regular bird feeder and put up a tube one for the finches. Grackles won't bother that one. :D The grackles also eat the suet cake, grr, so I attached the cage to a pie plate so it hangs upside down and the grackles have a hard time eating it.....I saw one trying yesterday and literally fell off because they were upside down. :D

I love watching the birds in the bird baths to which I now keep 3 filled, and watching the birds at the feeder. It is supposed to be 81 today, 87 tomorrow, and no rain in the next 4 days. Our grass is actually very dry already and I hope we are not in for a dry summer.

I am taking a trip to Menards tonight to get some flowers. Normally I take a trip to Indiana and go to an Amish greenhouse, but finances this year are telling me to keep my cost down. It will easily cost me $25 in gas just to drive to an Amish greenhouse, and I can drive to Menards and Aldi's for groceries for under $8.

I am going to make up approx 8 pots of flowers, put down some new mulch, and get my straw bale garden started.

Other improvement plans on my list for the summer are:
Paint frame to yard swing
Paint the wood siding on front porch and peaks of house
Paint porch floor or put a colorful outside rug down
Put up an umbrella clothesline and get rid of my hillbilly line stretched from the tree to the top of the fence rail. But it works. lol

So much to do and not enough time to do it all. Top of the list is having a garage sale on June 2. My garage is a disaster. again!

Well I have found some great things in the last few months. I have told you about some of them (Elliott Brass Bed, new bedside lamps). I now have pics of those to share. I also recently came across an amazing find on Craigslist. I am a big fan of vintage signs and was looking on CL and found an amazing handcarved sign from Disneyland. They used to have a restaurant called Sgt Prestons Yukon Saloon, next to the old Disneyland Hotel. Sgt Preston is a canadian mountie and they had a TV show about him, cartoons, books, comic books, etc. The restaurant was like an old dancehall and had a large stage. While you were eating there would be a show on the stage and with Sgt Preston, showgirls and a bear. Sometimes the showgirls and the bear would pull people out of the audience and bring them up on stage to join the show. Well when the restaurant was tore down to expand the Disneyland Hotel (in the 80's), memorabilia from the restaurant was sold. The lady who bought the sign never hung it up, just had it in her garage. She finally decided to sell it after having it for over 20 years. It is original from just a couple years after Disneyland was built, is made of wood, handcarved by a Disney artist. It is 3feet by 4feet and weighs about 100lbs. We hung it in our livingroom. I just love it.
My first question is... On my enclosed back porch, which will be remodeled in the near futue, I have a single pane picture window with a tall desk in front of it. I want to replace that window with a functional period correct one. Any ideas? It is about 3x5 ft. Thanks!

I moved Ashley back from college on Friday night. We sorted thru all her stuff and packed things back up for her to take to her apartment in August. She cleaned out her closet, and I will be having a major tag sale. I take her to Detroit on Saturday morning (May 12), and she will be gone for 3 months, and will return in time to get moved into her apartment. Another sad summer for me.

She will be caring for 6 mo old twins. She will be their live in nanny.

Here is a link to the mom of the family she will live with. Her name is Keren Brown, and she is a Seattle food writer/event planner.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...seattle_a.html

I did talk to her on the phone last week, and she is a very, very nice person. I think she will take good care of Ashley. ;), but all the same, I am still very sad.
I guess I should be grateful, as Ashley said to me.......At least this time I am still in the country.....only 2300 miles away.

Well, I had a pile of rocks, and time on my hands, so I made an herb wheel. I am not sure we'll use the herbs so much in the kitchen -- though we need to be learning to do more of that -- but it made an interesting element to occupy space in our on-going "non grass" initiative.

As for using the herbs, I know we'll use at least some basil with our grilled veggies this summer (assuming the garden works for us), and I have plans for a mint julep or two. We'll see how it goes!

Does anybody know anything about installing a door that swings, rather than the type that is on hinges?

There used to be a swinging door between the kitchen/dining room here. When I moved in, the door had somehow been destroyed.

On the top of the inside of the doorway, towards the left, is sort of short (maybe 3 or 4 inches) rod, sticking down. My thought is that the door will have to have a hole in it (braced with metal, I suppose), and that's how the door will swing. Other than that, I am clueless.

It is going to be a lonely summer once again. Ashley is finalizing plans to be a nanny for a family in the Queen Anne's District of Seattle for the summer.

I move her home from college on May 5th and take her to the airport on May 12th. :(

She will be a nanny for 6 mo old twins and a 4 yr old. The mom works at home at a food writer for a magazine and the dad is an engineer. While it will give her opportunity to make a little money this summer, I am extremely sad to see her leave again, to know I can't see her for 3 months.

I know there are some people here from the west coast, just not exactly sure who.
