Upcycled Holiday April Hoff uses rustic elements like an old window, a flocked wreath and patinaed reindeer to bring a cozy look to her Christmas mantel.

The fireplace mantel is a picturesque part of the living room and the perfect place to solidify your Christmas style. Whether your style is traditional or modern, use your mantel to create a scene that will set the holiday tone for the rest of your home.

Up on the Mantel-top

Due to their height and placement, the pieces on top of the mantel are usually the first to catch our eye. Start with a focal point that showcases your style, whether it’s a traditional wreath or a nature-inspired vignette, and use it to set the tone for your piece. “My mantel begins where many of my mantels begin—with an old window,” says April Hoff of the blog housebyhoff. “Old architectural elements give any vignette or room more character.”

Surround your focal point with a collection of Christmas favorites to complement your theme and color palette. Lucy Akins of the blog craftberrybush incorporated natural elements into her mantel for an outdoor effect. “I used a mixture of both faux and fresh greenery, and I found the birch logs during a walk through the forest,” she says.

Roasting on an Open Fire

Your fireplace doesn’t have to be functional or even exist to create a successful holiday mantel. April blocked her fireplace off completely with a cozy bench and some accent pillows.

Lastly, you can never go wrong with real or faux greenery. Hang a garland from the top of your mantel, or flank it with Christmas trees, ensuring the color matches your palette for a cohesive look.
