A closer look at Project House Tennessee’s light-filled kitchen, designed to frame the Appalachian views with classic materials and lasting style.

We’re excited to share a closer look at the kitchen design for Project House Tennessee in Kingsport, and it’s shaping up to be a space that feels both timeless and creatively connected to the beautiful surroundings and views.

The goal for the entire kitchen has been to blend classic cabinetry, natural materials, and thoughtful architectural details that feel welcoming and are built to last for generations to come.

Henry and Brooke Jones, our design/build partners at Plank & Pillow, walk us through the intentional details:

Cabinetry & Finishes

The kitchen will feature custom inset cabinetry by Brass & Ivory Cabinetry, crafted in beautiful white oak for both the island and perimeter cabinets. Natural wood brings warmth and subtle texture, while full-height storage and simple detailing keep the look clean and classic.

In the adjoining scullery, a warm gray color wraps the entire space, including the vertical nickel gap walls. This creates a cozy, layered room that feels distinct from the main kitchen while still connected to it.

All cabinetry will be finished with antique brass hardware, adding a touch of warmth and softly aged character.

Countertops & Shelving

The scullery will feature soapstone countertops giving it practical feel, while in the main kitchen, light marble or quartzite counters will keep the space bright and airy.

Between the refrigerator and pantry, open shelving made from the same countertop material creates a seamless transition between the storage and work surfaces while adding visual openness.

Range Hood & Appliances

A plaster range hood from Hoodsly will serve as a beautiful focal point. It will be finished with Venetian plaster for a soft, handcrafted look.

Appliances from ZLINE, including a custom-paneled refrigerator and dishwasher that blend into the cabinetry. A statement 48” range anchors the cooking wall, while a microwave drawer in the scullery keeps the main kitchen visually calm and uncluttered.

Windows, Doors & Architectural Details

A large window, from Windsor Windows, centered over the sink frames sweeping Appalachian Mountain views. Its header has been raised to nine feet to maximize light and views, making the outdoors feel like part of the kitchen. Black interior frames add contrast to the white walls and warm wood. “We wanted to raise the header to nine feet so it could fully bring in as much light as possible. It breaks from standard alignment, but it was a decision we felt strongly about”, explains Henry.

In the scullery, a custom mahogany door by Vintage Doors leads to the back porch. Finished in Special Walnut, it’s a statement piece that offers even more personality to the space.

Lighting

Lighting has also been carefully planned throughout. Wall sconces will provide gentle ambient light, while two large pendants over the island will offer balance and needed illumination without overpowering the space.

Flooring

Wide-plank white oak hardwood floors from Mullican Flooring will run throughout the home, creating continuity and reinforcing the warm, natural palette.

Visualizations

“Our kitchen renderings were created using ArchRender.ai, a tool Henry developed to transform drawings and 3D models into realistic visuals. It’s been essential in helping us test ideas, refine details, and make confident decisions before anything is built,” says Brooke. You can try it yourself at archrender.ai.

Overall, this kitchen is being designed as the heart of the home where family and friends can gather and enjoy warm functionality and gorgeous views of the landscape. We can’t wait to show you more in our next issue and are grateful to have you following along.
