The beloved summer retreats at Crystal Cove celebrate the winter holidays in nostalgic style.

The Crystal Cove Historic District, nestled along the picturesque coastline of Orange County, California, between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach is a charming, preserved enclave that offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history and architectural heritage.

The district dates back to the 1920s, when it was a place to gather, set up a pup tent and enjoy the sparkling waters in the secluded cove. Ultimately, 46 cottages were built in a vernacular style, mostly by friends of the Irvine family who owned the land at that time. With shingle siding, weathered wood exteriors and colorful beachy accents, each cottage has its own charming character.

Today, visitors to Crystal Cove can enjoy a special day at the beach that immerses them in this bygone era. Twenty-eight of the original cottages have been meticulously restored and are available for overnight stay, with 17 more cottages on the horizon for restoration. The beach itself is perfect for sunbathing, picnicking, and swimming. Hiking trails wind through the nearby hills, providing stunning views of the coastline.

Old-fashioned milkshakes and quick meals can be enjoyed at The Shake Shack on the hill or you can dine in style just a few feet from the sand at The Beachcomber restaurant, open since 2006. Guests can take home a souvenir t-shirt or an ocean-inspired piece of jewelry from the Park Interpretive Store. The district also hosts educational programs and events that highlight the cultural and natural significance of the area, including plein-air art classes and walking tours.

Each December, a fresh fir tree is lovingly set in the sand in front of The Beachcomber and adorned with simple trimmings. A large wreath is hung and wooden candy canes are perched festively in front of Cottage #46. These recurring and timeless touches add to the nostalgic aura of Crystal Cove, making it a truly a not-to-be-missed destination.

Fun Facts

  • In 1918, the film “Treasure Island” filmed scenes at the cove for a secluded, tropical vibe.
  • In the 1920s, a lumber ship capsized and wood that drifted ashore was used to build cottages.
  • The 1988 film “Beaches” used Cottage #13 as the setting for the beloved story of enduring friendship.
