Does an organized, clutter-free home seem like a goal you could never achieve, or a dream that could never become a reality? Fear not! Minimalism expert Shira Gill has created a toolkit to help you optimize your living space and regain your peace of mind.

Minimalism – An Introduction

Over the past ten years, Gill – the creative force behind Shira Gill Home, a lifestyle brand and popular blog – has developed a signature decluttering and organization process that will work for anyone, regardless of their space, lifestyle, or budget. In Minimalista, she explains the five-step process she uses to transform an unkempt abode into a neat, stylish oasis.

A tidy table in a living room setting.
Does the top of your living room table look as tidy as this one? Gill says it is imperative to put your items back where they belong every single day, so they don’t accumulate and cause clutter.

“We will first CLARIFY where you are and where you want to be. Then we’ll EDIT by subtracting the items that don’t serve your vision or goals. Next, we’ll ORGANIZE each space by type and usage, so it will be easy to find what you need, when you need it.

After that we’ll ELEVATE your organized space with some of my favorite easy styling hacks. Finally, I’ll teach you how to MAINTAIN your space makeover by implementing some simple habit shifts,” she writes.

Gill suggests editing your pantry by sections, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Only keep items that you’ll reach for often and that make sense for your current lifestyle.

A step-by-step guide

To keep readers engaged, Gill includes many writing prompts, examples, and checklists in the book. For instance, in one of the writing prompts, she asks the readers to reflect on how they want their spaces to feel and tells them to jot down any adjectives that would describe the vibe they are going for. As a bonus, she includes her go-to sources for purchasing products for every room in the house, such as Target, The Container Store, and Crate and Barrel.

Tips for Minimalism

Minimalista reveals that adopting a minimalistic mindset can be beneficial, and it encourages the reader to think about what they value most. “Minimalism can help improve every aspect of your life by freeing you from the clutter, distraction, and noise that stand in the way of living out your true purpose and values,” Gill writes. “To me, minimalism doesn’t refer to the lack or absence of something. It’s about having the perfect amount. Just enough without the excess.”

Neat, organized cabinets.
Organizing your cabinets doesn’t have to be difficult. Gill recommends storing the items you use every day, like plates and bowls, on a low, easy-to-reach shelf, while tucking away the supplies that only makes an appearance once a year, like your Thanksgiving roasting pan.

By providing solutions to problems and offering sensible advice, Gill positions herself as a friend who knows how to relate to the reader on a personal level.

Like any good friend, she doesn’t tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear to make positive changes.
