Collect Pyrex for a Vintage Kitchen

If the idea of having a vintage-style kitchen warms your heart, then the first ingredient on your shopping list for accessories should be vintage Pyrex bakeware. These classic kitchen workhorses are so popular, they have achieved iconic status. In fact, a vast majority of American homes have at least one product bearing the Pyrex brand logo, according to the pyrexware.com website.

Even if you don’t already own a Pyrex piece, you’ve probably admired them at flea markets, garage sales and elsewhere as a charming example of mid-century kitchen decor. Some of the brand’s most popular items are glass mixing bowls in bold colors or farmhouse patterns and clear measuring cups with red writing.

History

Pyrex glass bakeware has been made—first by Corning Incorporated and now by World Kitchen—using the same soda lime composition and heat-strengthening process for more than 60 years. The Pyrex glass bakeware sold in North America has been made in the United States since 1915. World Kitchen has always manufactured Pyrex glass bakeware in the U.S., and the packaging displays the American flag and the “Made in the USA” label.

Where to Find Them

Garage sales, flea markets, eBay and thrift stores are the best places to find vintage Pyrex pieces.

Price range

The low price points for Pyrex items add to their appeal. You can often find them for just a few dollars. As with any collectible, rarer pieces will cost more.

How to display them

Setting a Pyrex bowl on the kitchen countertop or island with fresh fruit like apples, oranges or bananas seems as natural as the contents themselves and gives the kitchen instant vintage appeal. The bakeware pieces are so pretty you can take them straight from the oven to the dinner table and use them as serve ware for steamed vegetables or berries—or, as my mom did—to showcase her famous Thanksgiving mashed potatoes.
