A Cheerfully Updated Family Kitchen in Texas

Sarah Stacey, the principal and founder of her Austin-based design firm Sarah Stacey Design, is all about elevating one’s ideas and pushing their design boundaries to inspiring places.

We asked her how this bright and sunny family kitchen came together for one family in Mouton, Texas.

“This is the house where our clients’ family comes to eat great meals and connect for the holidays throughout the year. Their knack for cooking large meals when their grown children and grandchildren visit required this space to be opened for better circulation and provide plenty of seating.

There was a six-foot wide pantry that had a window in it, so we converted it to built-in seating to utilize during those big family gatherings. Then we relocated the pantry into the kitchen and integrated it into the cabinets.

The kitchen at first had a desk and an island that was too large and didn’t provide enough functional storage. We addressed that by adding in modern cabinetry while respecting the home’s old-school Victorian style.

We presented two paint options to our client – one conservative (white) and the other a wild card (green), and we are so glad they went with the wild card! Some of our favorite projects are when clients took design risks.”

This handy pull-down faucet from Waterstone Faucets and apron sink from Kohler add beautiful yet practical details.

A window seat provided much needed extra seating and the gorgeous wallpaper is William Morris’s Pimpernel

Statement making pendant lights from Rejuvenation bring a fresh, modern touch to an otherwise Victorian style space.

The family chose Clary Sage paint from Sherwin Williams for a soft, warm look. Tile from Architerra Showroom and drawer pulls from  Amerock adds to the charm.

The kitchen has every modern convenience needed with a cooktop from Jenn-Air and a wine refrigerator from Perlick

More about Sarah

Sarah is known for her personalized 6-step approach of working with clients collaboratively from beginning to end ensures a completely customized space that represents you and supports the life you want. Sarah notes one of the best things about being a designer is that I get to put my wanderlust tendencies to work. Instead of physically traveling to some other place, Sarah explores the darkest corners of auction houses and antique stores for a one-of-a-kind sideboard, travel across the country to see what is new in tile and furnishings, and scour stacks magazines (new and old) to create what’s next for color, patterns, and furnishings.

A proud supporter of Austin’s art community, Sarah has served on the Board of Directors for the Rude Mechanicals, a ground-breaking ensemble-based theater collective based in East Austin. Sarah is currently on the board of Design Changes Lives, a new non-profit dedicated to inspiring confidence in children through custom-designed bedrooms.
