After a thoughtful renovation, this 1927 home imbues timeless French Country charm.
This comprehensive remodeling project by Winn Design + Build for a family of four residing in a Bethesda, Maryland, bungalow built in 1927 remedied a previous renovation in 2002 that compromised its rich history and unique character.
“Our goal was to breathe new life into this historic bungalow while respecting its original charm,” says Michael Winn, founder + president of Winn Design + Build. “The exterior transformation carefully balances durability, aesthetics and historical integrity, ensuring it remains a welcoming and timeless home for years to come.”

Winn Design + Build updated the façade with composite shingles and cementitious siding selected for their durability and modern appeal. Architectural enhancements included a projected gable with decorative corbels, flared shingles and a distinctive copper awning, complemented by custom millwork, shutters and window planter boxes that enriched the home’s historical character. The stoop, walkway and retaining wall were meticulously refurbished to marry the home’s original charm with updated functionality. And finally, the screened-in porch extends the living space seamlessly, offering year-round functionality with infrared heaters, a ceiling fan and an exterior TV for year-round entertainment.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was the collaboration with a neighboring homeowner, allowing us to source matching stone from a nearby renovation,” Michael says. “It was a perfect blend of preservation, craftsmanship and community spirit.”
This renovation epitomizes Winn’s ability to transform not just a residence but the very lifestyle of their clients. The result is a harmonious blend of Old World charm and contemporary functionality for a home that stands as a testament to Winn’s commitment to design excellence and quality craftsmanship.
