A simple DIY that brings softness, color, and personality to any corner of your home.
Hello, Cottage Friends!
One of my favorite ways to bring instant charm into a room is by adding fabric—especially in unexpected places. When I found a small vintage table with beautiful lines but a dark finish, I knew it was ready for a little whimsy. With a fresh coat of paint, a few yards of cheerful fabric, and a staple gun, this once-serious table became the sweetest cottage accent in my dining room.

This petite wooden table had classic lines but felt a little too serious for my cottage style. I saw those fluted legs and immediately knew she was ready for a cheerful, color-filled makeover.

Finished and styled, this skirted table adds color, texture, and a dash of whimsy. It’s amazing what a little paint and fabric can do to make a home feel more you.
What You’ll Need
- Fabric (a tablecloth, shower curtain, or fabric by the yard — about 2 yards)
- Paint + primer
- Fabric glue (washable, permanent bond)
- Staple gun
- Measuring tape
- Iron
- Small table
- Spray paint (for knobs, optional)
What You’ll Do:
I started by priming and painting the table in Impatient Pink by Sherwin-Williams, a happy color that instantly brightened the piece. For the skirt, I chose a lightweight white, red, and pink plaid—because nothing says cottage quite like checks. After measuring from the floor to the underside of the table, I hemmed the fabric with washable fabric glue.
To attach the skirt, I began in the center, folding the fabric over the top edge and stapling it beneath the rim. From there, I created pleats one by one, working my way around until the table looked full and gathered. A pair of spray-painted knobs in yellow added the final touch of playful personality.
Now this little table fits perfectly in its corner, offering storage, softness, and undeniable cottage charm. It’s amazing what a bit of fabric and color can do!

- A Fresh Coat of Color

After priming, I brushed on Impatient Pink by Sherwin-Williams. Watching the pink come to life is my favorite part of any project -it’s where personality really begins to show.
- Measure Twice, Cut Once

To get the perfect skirt length, I measured from the underside of the table to the floor. This ensures the fabric hangs just right-full, soft, and perfectly cottage charming.
- A Neat Hem, the Easy Way

Instead of sewing, I used washable fabric glue to create a clean, quick hem. It’s one of my favorite no-fuss tricks for projects where you want great results with less effort. Use a hot iron to give you a sharp fold.
4 & 5. Pleats Make the Magic

Starting in the center, I folded and stapled small pleats one by one. These gathers create that sweet, cottage-style fullness that makes the skirt look tailored but relaxed.
- Soft, Gathered, and Cottage-Ready

Here’s the moment the table started transforming—when the skirt began taking shape. Those red and pink checks brought instant charm and warmth.

Even from the side, the pleats and pink paint shine. This is one of those DIYs that proves cottage style is all about thoughtful layers and joyful details.
