State St. Bungalow: How to Make a Tiny Guest Bedroom Feel Bigger

The lure of tiny living is a popular topic these days. But truth be told, tiny living only works when you’ve got a smart design on your side. The State Street Bungalow guest room is one such space. This tiny guest bedroom used to have a built-in daybed with storage underneath. But this home was ready for a sophisticated upgrade.

Betsy had to work within the narrow room’s footprint because the adjacent stairwell prevented her from being able to enlarge the space.

We were limited with what we could do to the small and odd-shaped room thanks to a stairwell on the outer wall. After I had my team dissemble the built-in bed, I was able to add a queen size bed along with two floating shelves– a better options since nightstands were not going to fit the space.  I added shiplap to entire the wall to pose as the new headboard.

Since the space was so small, I wanted the shiplap to be installed horizontally instead of vertically to give the vision of a wider looking space and it worked! Simply White by Benjamin Moore painted on shiplap wall and Moonshine (also Benjamin Moore) a very light crisp grey on the rest of the walls also helped make the room feel bigger than it is.

I also installed two pendant lights to hang above floating nightstands to give that elegant appeal and to make this tiny guest bedroom feel larger.

To accent all the white, I added navy to the room to really pop and give us that true bungalow style. I purchased all bedding from Serena & Lily, floating nightstands from a custom shop on Etsy and lighting from Birch Lane.

Stay tuned for more of our renovations. Next up: The living room.
