Victory Farms: How to Turn an Entry Closet into a Mudroom

This week at Victory Farms we see how an entry closet in a very small entry was opened up and converted into a breathtaking custom built-in farmhouse-style mudroom. As you look at the before and demo pictures of the entry you will see all the wasted space and height that was not being utilized.  I was so excited to meet with my finished carpenter Greg once we had this space opened up. I sketched Greg a vision of what I wanted him to create and he was able to accommodate my design very exciting! I wanted to make sure that every inch of space was used and my client V had plenty of storage and seating room for all her visiting guests to take off their shoes and hang their weekend attire. But first, a reminder. Here was the space before:

And here is what it looks like now—a chic mudroom!

Since the style of our renovation was a modern farmhouse, I went with wide Winsor Shiplap and all Winsor One products to really give the built-in that quality finish. While our wood materials were scheduled for delivery, I headed back to my office to start picking out lighting, hooks, storage bins and fabric for custom bench cushions.

I had a lot of fun picking out finishes to tie the space together.  V is super fond of navy blue, so I decided to go with navy blue and brass sconces for the back wall of built-in from Sazerac Stitches. I used black cast iron spike railroad hooks to bring in that old world charm from Old Family Farmhouse, black leather storage bins with brass handles from Target and a jute diamond rug with accents of navy from Anne Selke.  I also wanted to add a fun personal touch to the mix, so I had Returning Grace a custom shop on Etsy make me a custom “Victory Farms” pillow to surprise V with for the final reveal.  Once the custom built-in was in place, I had my painter use Simply White by Benjamin Moore to really grab and give us that clean, crisp farmhouse design we wanted to achieve in the mudroom.

I met with my seamstress Jodi to take measurements of the new custom bench seat and come up with a design and fabric style to accommodate this beautiful space. I really wanted the fabric to pop, but in a warm cozy way and let the custom woodwork really be the center of attention since it was such an eye-catcher!

I chose a navy, white, black, grey tweed pattern fabric and had Jodi raise it to a 4-inch cushion so this would definitely accommodate comfort. Next, I wanted to pick out the perfect main entry light that would really connect with the space but give us a little glam.  After much research, I went with a fun brass orb light from Aarhus which really picked up the blues and whites and made the entry a statement. Now that we have this portion of the entry complete, next week you will see how we made the opposite side a great banquette area for dining and family games! Stay tuned… hope you enjoy this week’s reveal of the farmhouse-style mudroom!
