It’s fun to follow interior design trends and keep your home relevant. However, if you’re constantly following every trend out there, you might get overwhelmed trying to consistently change every part of your home. We asked designer Kara Christensen of Garden Gate Homes to share which interior design trends she feels will last so you can participate in classic trends without worry.
Mismatched Furniture
The next time you want to buy an entire bedroom set from one store, you might want to sleep on it first. Having matching furniture, it’s more likely that your space will go out of style in the next decade or two. “I haven’t done a matched bedroom set in I don’t even know how long,” Kara says. “My bedroom is never out of style because I never picked anything that matches perfectly.”
Instead, consider pulling together individual furniture pieces that coordinate but don’t entirely match. That way, if any of them go out of style, you only have to replace one piece. Incorporating antiques is a great way to achieve this look. “Mixing antiques with new furniture will stand the test of time,” Kara says. “Mismatched furniture always stays classic.”
Subway and square tiles are a tried-and-true tile choice. They’re unassuming, but they add great texture to your kitchen or bathroom.
Subway/Square Tiles
Tile trends are becoming more eccentric, and we’ll always love the accent walls homeowners are creating with fun and colorful tiles. But if you want a style that you’ll never have to replace again, consider subway and square tiles.
“It would never scream at you that it’s out of style,” says Kara. “It may not be the ‘in’ thing, but it will never be out. Concrete, terra cotta, patterned and mosaics are fun, but if you’re trying to outlast tile trends, stick with subway or squares.”
Antique Lighting
Lighting is an easy and often cost-effective way to give your home an entirely new look. While the lighting interior design trends are always changing, you can never go wrong with an antique light fixture. “Antique brass lights are still classic and coordinated,” says Kara. “I like to use them when I’m going more simplistic in my design.”
If you’re looking for one, try barn sales and flea markets. You might have to wash off some dirt, but there’s guaranteed character underneath.

And of course, it’s always best to decorate in a way that connects to the exterior of your home. Whether you’re in an old cottage, a farmhouse, a Tudor or Craftsman home, it will always be worthwhile to try and bring the exterior look indoors. “If you live in a home and decorate with your exterior style in mind, it will coordinate with the harmony of the home,” Kara says.
